    Stanton/Shure cart/styus, which ones??

Am thinking of getting either a Stanton or a Shure cart for my Techincs 1200, which model(s) of the se brands would you recommend? Bearing in mind, I use my 1200 for home listening and recording vunyl (mostly 12" singles) to CD.

I have owned and sold both brands of turntable cartridges and I would go with the Shure's as they have better sound and can track a wide variety of records. If you can afford to spend around $100.US then try the Shure M97xE cartridge.

The Shure V15VxMR if you can still get it. Not cheap, but it's the best-sounding cart before you go high-end. I'm told that the M97 is almost as good, and is a lot cheaper (and still being made). Note that both of these carts are NOT at all suitable for DJing and must be handled with great care.

None, they're all crap. Currently the industry standard are the Ortofons. The reason they took over is because of the reputation they have with quality.

Ortofon makes some great carts, but you have to spend serious cash for them (at least in North America, it is my understanding that they are cheaper in Europe). They've got all sorts of fantastic high-end carts, but I can't afford them. Their cheaper listening carts like the OM series just don't cut it, certainly not compared to the Shure (and yes, I have spent considerable time listening to both). I will give Ortofon credit for being of the the few companies to still really pursue the cartridge business, and making a *huge* variety of specialist ones for many, many different types of tonearm and playback. But for the cost of their brittle-sounding, poorly-tracking OM10, you can get a Shure M97xE which is tracks better and has a much flatter response.
