    What's Your Favourite Movie/DVD of 2005?

Now that 2005 is rounding up, all the magazines begin to publish their listings of what was hot and what was not. And let's admit it, it was not a very good year

    We can do it too

    1.War Of The Worlds

    2.Batman Begins

    3.Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2

    4.Collateral

5.Star Wars: Revenge Of The Sith

    My 5 Worst:

    XXX-The Next Dimension
    The Aviator
    Lord Of The Rings
    Herbie-Full Loaded
    Dukes Of Hazzard

Hey Johan, you're right about this year's crop of generally bad movies. Rgardless, Star Wars woul;d have been my hands down winner. :D

I'm not a Cruise fan. Seems really self absorbed to me. I'll pass on the 2 movies you have on your list with Cruise.
    Batman I will rent.
Kill Bill 2 I'll also rent. Coincidentally I was watching Kill Bill 1 again last night and I was think Tarentino would make a wonderful director for the Bond films. Grant you, he'd have reduce the blood but I love his mix of violence, humor, and sex.

Didn't he say that was his wish, to direct a Bond. It would be very special and creative but I'm afraid the Broccoli family, who own the rights, will not take the risk with Tino.

BTW, yesterday, we watched "54" again  Did you know it's the perfect time to watch this one. The story begins somewhere in the middle of 1979 and you get Christmas and New Year's Eve at the same time.

And Salma looks very beautiful in it (specially in the end scene with that special haircut) but Sela Ward, wow, what a woman!

"War of the worlds" was one of those movies that I thought I would turn off after a few minutes, but, hey, I was glued to the screen the whole movie.

    And 1 for the boyz!

Hey Johan, I didn't know Tino mentioned his interest in directing Bond. He would be the perfect guy to bring Bond back to the way it was 30 plus years ago.
I'm trying to remember Salma's haircut scene. I'll have to pull that one out again...the dvd that is The scene I always like is the seeing her crotch in those tight jeans. She was standing and talking to the main character (can't remember his name?).
Like I said Johan, we have very similar taste. :D I've always liked Sela. I first noticed her in some early '90s tv show.

Are we talking about dvd realeses in general or dvd realeses of recent theatrical films? There were plenty of to-die-for titles out by companies like Synapsis or NoShame, what with the Sergio Martino giallos like "The Strange Vice of Signora Wardh" starring the real Queen of world cinema, Edwige Fenech. For from-screen-to-disc I'd choose "Occhi di Cristallo" - a ferocious and ultrastylish psychosexual neo-giallo out last summer in Italy, the British "The Descent" - an all-female group of extreme sports enthusiasts meet something to really scream about in a maze of caves -, "Blueberry", "Kill Bill 2", "Innocence", and finally the jawdropping "Calvaire/The Ordeal". Of course the crap realesed into theatres make the worst dvd dreck: War of the Worlds - a hideous let's-all-pray-for-an-evangelical-America trashfest, the incredibly cynical and mawkish Star Wars thing being the two sorriest examples.

Jussik, that's not true. The world was not saved by Jesus, it was Tommie who went after those damn Martians and then splash-boom-bang-wizzzzzzz!!!!

Tommie is our hero, Tommie is cool, Tommie rules!!!!

(except when he's invited on Oprah of course  )

Jussi, keep in mind that Star Wars is really one story broken up in 6 pieces. I think Lucas did a great job tying up many things that are almost 30 years apart. Episode III, the last one, is supposed to be the lead up to the original Star Wars movie.

Well, we all loved the first film, liked the second, and thought the 3rd closed the circle nicely. Only in his megalomania the producer threw the admittedly intricate classic premise out of the window, increased his production volume, and piled on the CGEs, to the point reached in the latest in which every inch of the screen was filled with details with no connection to the narrative - if there was one to begin with. CGE overkill, just like in the horrible Harry Potter film now making the overweight nerds drool in their concert t-shirts and no deodorant. The Star Wars flicks, just like the potters, are not films any more, they are simply products manufactured to milk money as long as they can. This can be done in an enjoyably crass way, like with "Mr & Mrs Jones", not to mention whole decades and genres of exploitation movies. Only Lucas&Spielberg & co do it in that very special, very American and newagey cum scientologist way too nauseating for anyone over the mental age of 13. And as Videoskooter writes, indeed TOM CRUISE is their messenger, the perfect idol of generations worshipping plastic style over substance :D

JussiK... how I wish your cynical overview didn't ring with such truth .... no longer willing to be herded in as a part of any " mass targeted audience " these hyped -up via Carl's Jr. special collectors Coke cups .... series of eight ... get them all ....films are manufactured for ...... and tired of sitting through overly loud , overly fast-paced blurry montages of obviously fake puppets and CGE cartoons .... quick-timed to contrive an otherwise nonexistent aura of excitement ...... ( once one catches on to these intentionally included in every movie gimmicks ..... the resulting resentment of being expected to obligingly gobble up such blatantly calculated ingredients is unavoidable....)

........ the number of times I went to the movies in 2005 : ZERO !

You can tell Hollywood is running out of original ideas with all the remakes/revivals that have been out in the past couple of years. "Bewitched", "Bad News Bears" and "Dukes of Hazzard" just to name a few.

I'm waiting for Beyonce to do a remake of "Mahogany" LOL!!

Most movies I saw this year fall in the art-house department. Some favorites:

    -CineVardaPhoto (Agnes Varda)
    -Promised Land Hotel (Amos Gitai)
    -Keane (Lodge Kerrigan)
    -Twist of faith (Kirby Dick)
    -Victoire (don't remember the director)
-I am a sex addict (Caveh Zahedi)

I saw few action movies: the best were Kill Bill Vol. 2 and Sin City.

Oh I agree totally on the computeranimation. That's why movies like "Blade" and "The Matrix" absolutely don't appeal to me. In fact I hate that stuff because it looks like a cartoon. "Star Wars-The First Episode I" was a bummer for that same reason, "Attack Of The Clones" was blatantly boring but the recent one was in the same style as the old stuff and I enjoyed it.

"War of the worlds" is an exception because it's so well done and very realistic and I'm not a big fan of Tommie neither but I liked him very much in that pic. And yes, scientology. Travolta also is an adept and probably many others.

Just saw a preview of "King Kong". It's a no go. I don't see a gorilla, I see a Disney figure and that ruins the whole experience for me.

BTW even the Disney Cartoons of the recent years don't charm me. Where's the romance, the warm feeling? It's just another form of Manga which I hate.

I think we all agree on 1 thing and that's the absolute decline of Hollywood. BTW I'm taking notes of all the movies you guys mentioned coz' I dig Arty and independent films too

    Hi everyone :P

I don't go to the movies as much as previous years. I'm no longer interested and to stingy to pay $10 for a 90min overhyped, remade, oversexed, over the top violent crapola of today. I can't even find a good comedy anymore. Well there were a few that was quite or very entertaining:

    1.Lord of the Rings
    2.Collateral
    3.Four Brothers
    4.Fantastic Four

Kill Bill vol 1 & 2 was overrated! I didn't see what the big fuss was about.

Incredible Hulk would have been a success if they didn't drag it out soooooooooo long. The plot was okay.

Fat Albert.....whoever directed that movie should be beaten for filming such garbage and doing an injustice to a classic cartoon.

Alien vs Predator was good not great but good. The cast was lousy and I was expecting more of a rush.

    I would like to see:
    War of the Worlds
    Crash
    King Kong
    Syriana

    *Chocolatte*

now THAT I want to see and I want to see it badly! Instead of treating the concept as a joke nrgbeat you should email the studio who did the original and sell your stunning idea for one million USD, after taxes. The remake of "Mahogany" will prove to be a tremendous success - how could it possibly fail? :-) AND the Beyonce version of the title tune will automatically be number one in the charts, too, with alittle rap there by 50 cents, so secure your percentages from that dept.

Just sat thru 3 press screening hours of King Kong. The first hour wasn't that bad, with a sort of wholesome yet not too mawkish family aventure feel to it. As soon as the first dinosaurs were introduced on Skull Island, the pic became Jurassic Park 4 or is it 5? In any case, by the time we got to the section in which the cast ran in that narrow pass trying to avoid being stomped by the CGE monsters, all was lost - the effects were simply lousy. The gorilla is okay as such, with sad eyes and an expressive face, but the original was just as good. The new Kong is: endless numbing fights between Kong and the tyrannosauruses, one good bit where a penis-like bloodworm sucks a man's head, a nice scene with the ape and the girl sitting on the top of a cliff gazing into sunsets. In other words, strictly formula, for nerds only, don't bother.

I heard they keep introducing characters through the KOng movie who ten minutes later would fall off a cliff or become monster food ...... like these movies themselves ... the characters wiithin have no core and are quite expendable ......

Hmm, who would they get to play the Anthony Perkins part? Vince Vaughn perhaps or maybe they could update it and hire Angelina Joli as an obsessed lesbian psychopath who stalks Beyonce and the two of them have an interracial lesbian love scene. :o

OK Johan, I finally watched Batman. Not bad. In fact it's the best of the recent Batman movies I've seen.
By the way, it sounds awesome in surround sound!

The formula for all these monster movies is a chase. **** everyone could be chased by Tweedledee and Tweedledum and you'd have the same movie.

The same thing has happened to the movies that's happened to music.

Thank God for my Disco collection! :D
