Kenny Dope - What Do You Guys Think Of His Remixes?

I'm a huuuuge fan of Kenny Dope's recent remixes of old funk and disco tracks. My first exposure to what he was doing was via the Manzel remixes of Space Funk and Midnight Theme. Since then, he's put out some awesome remixes of tracks like John Davis & The Monster Orchestra's 'I Can't Stop', 'Gotta Get Your Love' by Gary Davis and Sanction (or Clyde Alexander), and recently he put out a couple of BT Express 12" remixes of Express and Peace Pipe.

I mention these because I just discovered he just put out a CD called 'Kenny Dope Presents Randy Muller's Best' where he revisits a number of Randy Muller's tracks from Brass Construction, to BT Express, to Skyy.

What I really like about Kenny Dope's approach to remixing is that they are faithful to the sounds of the originals. There aren't any added synth drums, and there isn't any looping or effects that would make the mixes sound anachronistic. In other words, they sound like they could have been made back in the day.

Do you guys dig what Kenny Dope Gonzalez is doing?

You can check out sound samples of the album at Juno.co.uk:

While I've already got the BT Express tracks on vinyl 12"s, I'm pretty psyched over the Brass Construction tracks. Skyy - not so excited, but that's just my taste...

Kenny did a FANTASTIC treatment of "Neither One Of Us" by Gladys Knight and the Pips which is on the Motown Remixed UK version.
Kenny is a great talent indeed. His mixes SONICALLY are on a par with Dr. Dre (whom even if you dont like his musical output- if you have heard how his stuff SOUNDS....he is a great great engineer).

I haven't bought Dr Dre's records, but I do have his stuff on compilations and have heard them on the radio, and yes, they do sound great. I don't know what his recent stuff sounds like, but I recall the early to mid 90's stuff being great sounding, including his work with Snoop.

Kenny Dope is one lucky guy to get access to the master tapes of the tracks he's remixed. Don't get me wrong, I also enjoy what Danny Krivit has done with his re-edits, but you can only do so much with re-editing. Kenny's job is made even trickier because he has to work harder to achieve a mix faithful to the 70's sound. I'll have to see if his remix of Neither One of Us was released on its own. I'm not a fan of the Motown remixes because they're too altered from the originals, and while that's not necessarily a bad thing, I'm not crazy about it either.

On a similar note, I recently came across a 12" remix of 'Its Just Begun' by The Jimmy Castor Bunch that was put out by BMG. I don't think Kenny Dope had anything to do with it, but it is awesome in that the mix pulls off the vocals, so you get not only a straight instrumental version, but also a breakdown minimalist version too. The song structure is still the same, but its cool hearing the song stripped down to its elements.
