Boogie Oogie Oogie 12" destroyed by Capitol

    *****

I found this inserted note in the Taste O f Honey / Gloria Jones promo 12" :

    _______________

    Dear Subscriber:

About the enclosed 12" of "BOOGIE OOGIE OOGIE"/"BRING ON THE LOVE "
--- Capitol Records decided to promote the latter & destroyed the "BOOGIE OOGIE OOGIE " side in the process. This was not our fault; please don't call us and say your copy is defective --- because they all are ! If you don't have a copy of "BOOGIE OOGIE OOGIE " yet, we suggest you purchase it commercially . Capitol's supply on this cut has been extremely limited & we have been unable to acquire them for distribution. Sorry for the inconvenience .

Do you buy the pool's explanation as to why their members received ( intentionally ) defective copies ??

Sounds like crass marketing, if you ask me. They wanted the DJs to buy the record rather than get a free one because its a hot record.

Sounds weird that Capital will go through all that trouble just to ruin this particular Record Pool's supply to sell what? a hundred extra copies ? not all record pools distributed copies were defective as my Promo (SPRO 8821) copy plays fine, I suspect there is another reason.

:o :o As a lover of vinyl, this is truly quite a disturbing sight before me ......

..... I've been pondering about this letter from the record pool and I was thinking that if I were them and sending this out ... my phrasing would've been more of this nature ::

*** WARNING!! WE ARE FINDING THE BOOGIE OOGIE OOGIE SIDE OF THE 12 " TO BE DEFECTIVE. WE WARN ALL OUR DJ'S TO TEST YOUR COPY BEFORE PLAYING IT IN YOUR CLUB!!!!! ***

Something like that . .....a note that expressed such concerns .....

Then I thought I'd play this record and see just how bad this "intentional " defect was ......

When I removed the record from the sleeve I couldn't believe my eyes at what I saw ...... no wonder the record pool didn't feel the need to warn anybody ...... there is no doubt that this record is by no means playable .

There are 10 deep nail scratches each starting at the rim and going across the grooves of the record to the label ...... looking like spokes on a wagon wheel !! :o

Yep . Capitol definitely damaged this record on purpose . :o

I'm actually glad to see that Capitol decided to put some muscle behind Gloria Jones' "BRING ON THE LOVE " . It deserved to be a bigger hit .
It was very rare to couple two different acts on the same 12" and I bet this incident served as a future reference as to why it's a bad idea. Orginally Capitol probably figured , "Hell, we're sending out one song to all the DJ's .....why not double our bang for the buck and work two songs at the same time" ......

Trouble is when one song is so strong, like BOOOGIE OOGIE OOGIE ....... it can't help but make the other song seem inferior by comparison.
So once BOOGIE OOGIE OOGIE"s momentum was beyond needing promotion ... it appears Capitol then decided rather than repressing .... to just use their existing 12" ers and simply destroy the Taste Of Honey side making it clear they wanted the DJ's to give the "B" side some attention . ( Sure would've caught mine after seeing the thoroughly marred Taste Of Honey side )

One other problem with the situation ..... while I think the Gloria Jones number is terrific...... I think the disco angle was not their best approach for this song in the first place ..... should've been worked more heavily through the R&B stations .......I bet in the long run somebody got their ass regally chewed over this entire marketing strategy ......

Shame on remicks and spellbound! :o Obviously there are many on this site who know disco music inside out, but equally there are those who are only just starting to discover the genre and should also be made to feel welcome, and guided to the answers they are looking for. I don't think this is a place for snobbery.

elray, may I guide you to the vinyl vault on this website, where you can read reviews of thousands of disco LPs, 12s and even 7 inch singles.
    http://www.discomusic.com/records-index

On here, you will find out that on the commercial release (in the US) of the Boogie Oogie Oogie 12 inch single, the B side was "Bring on the love (why can't we be friends again)" which (EDIT) is by Gloria Jones.

    http://www.discomusic.com/records-more/755_0_2_0_C/

In the UK, the 12 inch single had "World spin" on the B-side (which was by A Taste of Honey, and on their debut LP) - I need to get around to adding this one to the vinyl vault as I have it in my collection.

Meanwhile, "Keep on jumpin'" was by Musique, not A Taste of Honey. This was released on both LP and 12", the b-side on the US 12" release was "In the bush" which was a huge hit all over the world. I'm sure you simply got confused between "In the bush" and "Boogie oogie oogie" for some reason!

That's because the B side isn't by them .... the B side is by Gloria Jones !!!! ...... ( which is the whole point of this thread !! :P ) .........

My apologies - Bernie hadn't stated in his review that the B-side was by Gloria Jones, and I hadn't thought to scroll down to see your correction.

Thanks for the memory slap DARRENS. That's what I get for posting under the influence of Tussinex & a fever. I sat here picturing the album cover in my fuzzy head & In The Bush came out as Keep On Jumpin'. I haven't dug through my stacks in a long time. I think I was so giddy at the discovery of this site that it started stirring up memories of all the music & the activities that went along with it. Also, thanks for the back up. I guess I should speak softly or not at all....

Now, for the all-knowing of you, who the hell is Gloria Jones? :o

I believe Gloria Jones is best known for singing the original version of "Tainted Love." She was also a writer and producer for Motown for a while. She's also known for being the late Marc Bolan's common-law wife at the time of his death..

It turns out there was another pressing of the Gloria Jones song .

Besides this double sided Capitol 12 " with both Taste Of Honey and Gloria Jones ( which based on the record pool memo was a commercially released 12 " )........
Capitol also released a Gloria Jones only promo 12" with just "BRING ON THE LOVE " on both sides.
They tried to give this song plenty of push ......

Maybe, had they spoken with some DJ's ,they might have learned that the song wasn't simply overlooked because it was on the B side of "BOOGIE OOGIE OOGIE " ...but also because the tune's sound was just a bit weak in its disco components .....
Once Capitol made the decision to release it again all on its own , and to chase the club market with it , they needed to get a DJ ....or Tom Moulton ... to remix it and offer that updated "improved" version as the B side to the original ..........
