Isaac Hayes was in Europe recently making television appearances amongst other things & looking very good.

I bought 2 CDs recently that both feature Laura Branigan- an Italian 80's collection that features 'Self Control'(infinitely better than Gloria) & Cerrone's 'Way In' (not one of Mr.C's best efforts IMO!)- she has a very distinctive voice but give me Jocelyn Brown any day!

Hey! I read some renowned session musicians played on Laura's hits. Does someone have the players list on "Self Control"? Seems Steve Lukather played the guitar riff... Am I correct?

Hello room, thankfully this concert is free. Two basically 'One hit wonders' ('Gloria' from her, 'Don't Let Go' from him). I would be amazed if anyone paid for this 'gathering' (I can't call it a 'concert' with two songs). Don't get me wrong, both artists songs were great and very well done and enjoyable. Yes they had other releases, but most people may remember one other song that they sang. Sorry about my rantings, but to me they are both 'One Trick Ponys'.
And the beat goes on and on and on...

Laura Branigan had several hits if you recall.

    "Gloria"
    "Self Control"
    "Solitaire"
"How Am I Supposed To Live Without You"
    "The Lucky Ones"

    I wouldn't call that being a one-hit wonder.

    Isaac Hayes--a "one hit wonder"?????!!!!!

And the hit you pick is "Don't Let Go"????

    Geez, that's heresy!!!!
Besides being a legendary songwriter for Stax artists in the 1960's....

Hayes was one of THE PIONEERS of DISCO!!!!]

THE link between Sly Stone & Barry White, if ya ask me.

Funky Guitars mixed with Orchestral Strings= The Theme from Shaft. I think Mr. Hayes gave a few ideas to Barry White who ran with them.

    Exactly! Good point, Mark.
Thanks Voyage, the problem with the CDNow list (same in allmusic.com) is it mixes the players of all the songs, and in session work the band tends to vary from one song to another.
Now, if anyone has the Laura Branigan LP with the credits song by song...

    Nano,

I musta gotten rid of Laura's LP's. I have a CD of her Greatest Hits and her 12"ers, BUT can't find the info on the guitar player on "Self Control".

For the record, to the Laura naysayer--she had 7 Top 40 Pop hits from 1982 - 1987.

"GLORIA" (PEAKED #2 FOR 3 WKS)
    "SOLITAIRE" (#7)
"HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO LIVE WITHOUT YOU" (#12)
    "SELF CONTROL" (#4)
    "THE LUCKY ONE" (#20)
    "SPANISH EDDIE" (#40)
    "POWER OF LOVE" (#26)

Hello room, yes these artists had other 'hits' (to me they didn't 'chart' for too long) but the two I mentioned were thier biggest (and for Issac, wasn't 'Don't Let Go' his only DISCO hit? I not talking about songs that charted on the Soul or Top 40 chart, but disco songs that charted on the DISCO (or with 'Laura's Top 40/Dance chart)charting songs.
And the beat goes on and on and on...

    Nano--

I have the Self Control LP on CD, but it does not list the credits song by song; the credits it does list are pretty much the same as the ones Voyage already posted. Whether the original LP lists more specific credits I don't know (I got rid of most of my old LPs as I replaced them with CD copies), but Steve Lukather's name is nowhere to be found on the CD.

Thanks, Jeff and the others. In fact I think I had read that about Lukather in Toto's own website. But then, Lukather is also quoted saying that Miles Davis had asked him to play in his band and that he refused for "schedule" reasons. Mmmmmm... sounds like "he's dead so he won't deny this lie" to me!

Man, you are way, way, waaay off base. So far off that I think you're in the wrong ballpark. Here's a list of some of Mr. Hayes CLUB hits. I stress CLUB because I'm not including his strict R&B work.

    SHAFT
SHAFT II (1978 remix by Jim Burgess)
    PURSUITE OF THE PIMPMOBILE
I'M GONNA MAKE YOU LOVE ME
    DO YOUR THING
    LOVE ATTACK
    THEME FROM 'THE MEN'
    JOY
    STRANGER IN PARADISE
    MOONLIGHT LOVIN' (MENAGE A TROIS)
    HYPERBOLICSYLLABICSESQUEDALYMISTIC
    GOOVE-A-THON
    DON'T LET GO
    FEVER
    DISCO CONNECTION
    CHOCOLATE CHIP
    I CAN'T TURN AROUND
    I AIN'T NEVER

I'll just chalk up your comments to the fact that MAYBE you weren't hanging out like the rest of us --- ALL DAY, ALL NIGHT. But, from the moment Isaac did his version of "Walk On By", he was FAR from a 'one-hit wonder'.

Maybe I should also point out that I don't consider songs a "hit" because they make a magazine's or someone's chart. I couldn't care less. Club-play, DJ's word-of-mouth and the reaction in the rooms I worked is where I'm coming from.

    Hey Mark,

I can deal with everything here except that gut-wrenching "Gloria". Sadly, my favorite is missing: "Moonlight On Water (Sex On The Beach)". Love the song, love doing it even better!

Don't forget Hayes' "Chocolate Salty Balls" from the South Park TV show. I'm completely serious; this song hit the top 40 in the UK.

Oh, and "Gloria" is in heavy rotation on Hell's Playlist.

Does this mean you would only pay to for a concert if the artist had more then one hit? Not because they are great artist or live preformers?
Well, have fun then at the Titney Spears or Backyard Boys concert! They had lots of hits (too many)! But that would never be a reason for me to go see those taperecorded lipsync-playback artist perform.

Oh by the way; i wanted to go see MACEO PARKER last night at the Blue Note Jazz festival in Belgium, Ghent. But when we arrived there, it was completely sold out! I wonder how many number one hits he has had? Must have been more then one then, right?

You're going to force me to watch this show, aren't you? And what, pray tell, does this song sound like? The title is freaky.

    Nicky,

I too am a big fan of South Park--at least in the early days. I haven't watched it lately, BUT the movie is Hilarious!!!!

Isaac Hayes does the voice of "Chef" the male "Lunch Lady" at the kid's school. He is the sage the kids come to for advice--usually about sex and he tells them stuff in pretty frank language that usually sails right over their heads, BUT makes the viewer laugh his ass off.

The "Salty Chocolate Balls" was a candy treat he was serving at a concert or fair or something. Anyway, he had a song (he always has a smutty, suggestive song). Something about "put em in your mouth and suck em".

He also had a song about a menage a tois ("You and Me and She") and one about "No substitute" that cracked me up.

Graham can probably tell this stuff better than I. Graham, fill in the cracks.
