I once won a contest to have dinner with Dimitri From Paris and this record actually got us started on a long winded chat about Walter. Dimitri had a friend who really wanted this mix and when he heard it, was really bummed. Walter's mixing isn't too much to either Dimitri, myself or Dimitr's friend's taste I guess. All he said was that it was fairly percussion heavy and long for no reason. The album version is punchy enough for me.
That's just my two cents.
I love Walter's mix of "Catch Me On The Rebound" that surfaced last year though. There; a little Walter love for y'all.
Brettsomers--I loved you as Blanche on The Odd Couple too! Welcome aboard
Did you know there is a 3-disc compilation called Mixed With Love, which culls Gibbons' mixes from Salsoul Records? It's quite an interesting listen, although the Gladys Knight song isn't on it.
my pal Keefe swears this remix of "IT'S A BETTER THAN GOOD TIME" which he has and I don't --is to die for.![]()
He says Gibbons stripped it down and took all the poppy elements out of the original (which I rather like)...but he made it very different....I don't know if I've ever heard this or not. Viteritti has it on a mix...but it seemed somewhat similar to the LP version...maybe I need to revisit that mix again...cause I would think BV woulda played the Gibbons remix if it's that "SPECIAL."![]()
i love the song but i have a feeling gibbons may have removed some of the flourishes that cloy on the standard version. i HAVE downloaded a version, i think it clocks at about 5 and a half mins. it NEEDS to be stripped a little. i already like the original, ii wish i could remix it myself!
I love Gladys Knights discohits. unfortunally, there are not that many discocuts from the late 70s....but the few she recorded are real gems...baby don´t change your mind, bourgie bourgie, taste of bitter love.
I think the original version of "better than good time" is funkier and better...but i still have a great love for the walter gibbons mix...
it has some depth...it´s kinda dubby. it has grown on me. it works as a downtempo discosong.
most of the walter gibbons mixes takes time to appreciate...when i started listening to disco i favoured tom moultons mixes much more than larry levans or walters...but nowadays i listen more to walter. tom moulton is great with philly-type records- jacks up the strings.
and levan is best with discofunk.
i guess walter gibbons was the first "deep house dj"...i love to strut around at home hearing all the bongos.
everyone who´s interested in walter gibbons: visit

tim lawrence has written a great biography for the mixed with love-compilation. very extensive info about walters dj-career and personal life
There is a Joey Negro disco mix on the z records site which starts with the WG mix, I think it's downloadable

Yes 6'52 of pure delight...
I also love GLADYS' incursion into disco.
And I adore WALTER GIBBONS mixes.

This mix is available on Amazon on a CD called The Soul Of
Disco Vol.2.However it is not the full version which I
believe clocks in at over 13 minutes.Apparently the acetate was of poor quality and Joey Negro(the compiler)
didn't want to use it.Personally,I feel this cut needed the
extra percussion that Walters mix adds.
