    The Ring "Savage Lover"

Couldn't find too much on this perusing the A-Z. Was this a big hit? I only foundt about via the forums and cannot see wt the fuss is about. I like the synth bit and the girls at the start. The rest is sort of meh. The orgasming woman thing just doesn't do it for me. The squelchy synth bit halfway through is nice though. Sort of patrick Adams-esque. Can someone clue me in to the when where and why of this song?

    Thanks.

Savage lover on Vanguard records was huge here, in most disco clubs, on radio CKMF in late 70's, and is among my all time fav disco tracks.

"SAVAGE LOVER" for me was one of those tag along songs .... it was the beginning of HINRG and at 140 bpms!!!! it mixed in well with other superfast hotties of the time .."SUNSET PEOPLE" and "KNOCK ON WOOD " come to mind . I don't regard it as great ..... but something that stood out as different ..... yet it fit in nicely with the other tunes of the day and the choices for its BPM were in short supply .....

( I think it was also one of those songs where you sensed that things were changing in the land of disco ....)

I love this song! I can't give you any info on why it was popular, but I do like it a lot. I bought the 12" with the instrumental B side, the LP, which if I recall correctly, indicates they were from Mexico. I even bought a 45 from Argentina for the song Jump under the name 'Salta' because it had the instrumental B side for that track. The album as a whole is not so good, but I do enjoy Savage Love and Jump. Too bad they didn't do any latin-tinged disco grooves.

I too thought it was a big smash; checking Joel Whitburn's book I see...IT'S NOT LISTED!!!!...I'm thinking this is an error...I'll have to check this out.

I recall buying the 12" of this back then; a rarity for me at the time; I thought it had some "Devil's Gun" grandeur.

I had the same feeling of surprise yesterday when I discovered that the Jones Girls had never had a single in the UK top 75, not even 'Nights Over Egypt' which had such a big following here.
To return to the topic, I agree that Savage Lover was, along with Bob-a-Rela, Peter Jacques Band & Patrick Hernandez part of that 1979 'proto-hi-nrg' sound that was very very big in NYC gay clubs of the time apparently. They must've been aware of their popularity in gay clubs as 'Jump' is very camp I think.

Savage lover was a monster hit in South Florida's club for many years, even though the labels says 140 BPM it is actually 136 BPMs (just re-checked), this one was so popular in my area that I used to include it in high octane/High Energy (oldies) hit sets close to the end of peak hour designed to keep’em dancing ‘till the end, I always skipped the intro and drop it in when the identifiable “tututrutu tutu” vocals kicks in, usually extending and /or doubling up on this portion with a second copy and cutting off the second half where the ‘energy’ starts to fade a bit after the break and synths, I remember the people just jumping and screaming and singing along to the “Tututut” parts over that great, room shaking techno bass.

Here is a list of some cuts I remember using for years (into the early 80’s) during High Energy sets (not in any order) that included “Savage Lover”, and despite what today’s revisionist are selling, all this early high energy music (and much more) was played in Straight Clubs! The Horror !!!!! How do they dare!  this is Boystown music! :o

Actually, Whitburn's Disco/Dance book has the song listed as "The Ring" and the artist as Savage Lover! It peaked at #14 in June of 1979.

    So much for proofreading.

But I love this song. I had no idea that there was ever an album by this group. I just figured they were a one-off studio group.

    Great stuff.

Wow, great list Mixmachine ..... it really flooded back the memories of then ...you mentioned a couple I clearly remember mixing into "SAVAGE LOVER " : ..... "HAVE A CIGAR " and "BOOGIE WOOGIE DANCING SHOES"

then those made me think of these from that same time :

"CRANK IT UP " ---Peter Brown
"UNDERCOVER LOVER/ :DON'T YOU WANT MY LOVE " --- Debbie Jacobs
    and maybe " BANG A GONG " --- Witchqueen ? ..... ....

As far as the HINRG thing ..... of course all clubs played it !! I mean we're talking music that goes way back and includes universal classics like "SHAME" and "LOVIN' IS REALLY MY GAME " . It isn't as though 132+ BPM 's was suddenly invented in '79-'80....

I think what happened around the summer of '79 is that alot of the disco composers had figured out that the peak records of the night were the faster tunes ... and the aim became then to have that superhit for that part of the night ..... that grand finale type song.
Then with so much faster music at hand that peak period of the night kept getting stretched longer ... until finally it shifted from music just being played at peak time .... to hell .... just play the fast music all night long , one after another ( sure easier to mix too !! ) .....
result : HINRG .... This coincided with the huge decline of discos and clubs in the early 80's.... & the disappearance of most of the suburban, less intense, clubs ... ( especially the straight ones ) .
I think it's fair to say that it was specifically some of the big gay clubs at that time then that switched their format to be exclusively HINRG ...... ( Boystown).... while I'm not sure that any straight clubs adopted this same approach. (?)
I 'm only conjecturing here ..... trying to put together the pieces ... ....so can anyone name any straight clubs that went full-on HINRG ?? That'd be something interesting to document ..... :) 8)

Was Hi-NRG a term they used back then, or isn't that a 90's term? Did they distinguish the faster disco with a special name if it wasn't Hi-NRG? Another example of a high BPM is Eddie Holman's 'This Will Be A Night To Remember'.

From memory, I first heard the term in late 1982 or early '83.

In the UK we didn't go for the above mentioned tracks in such an eager fashion, although a few of them were big hits. Generally, anything above 128 -130 BPM was considered too fast for UK tastes, especially as an extended set.

    you are so right, DiscoKidd...

I went through the charts of 1979 last night and found "Savage Lover" debuting in the summer; however they listed it as "The Ring" by Savage Lover for a few weeks and I guess Whitburn's people didn't see that it was corrected later on. Yikes!!!! So Whitburn's book has this entry under "Savage Lover" as the group with their song 'The Ring"!!!

"Savage Lover" was one of the biggest disco hits in Mexico, a local record company released "Savage Lover", "Jump" and "Man from America" (Medley from Man from U.N.C.L.E/America) as 12" singles licensed from Vanguard Records.

Their Long Play was also released in 1980 and included:

    Side A
    Man from America 3:38
    Savage Lover 10:22
    Ole, Ole (El Toro) 5:41

    Side B
    Jump 8:27
    Hollywood 5:04

The Ring even performed live!!! in a popular local disco TV show called "Fiebre del 2", this contest show was in the air for 2 years.
