THP Orchestra "Tender Is The Night"

OK, not as storming as "Two Hot for Love/Too Hot for Love", but a great tune to me. I love the simple bass intro and then the sort of swank string beginning. The chorus changes tempo and key too, which is really neat as it adds interest to the song. The vocals are a little thin and the whole theme is a little cliched in retrospect, but I really enjoy it. Canadian too boot no?

Although the 3 hats productions (THP)were based in Toronto, I'm sure I've read somewhere that they were Scottish. So there were other Scottish disco acts other than Kelly Marie & Average White Band!

The writers / producers of the THP hits are Bruce Ley and Willi Morrison. Willi Morrison was Scottish by birth, but I believe he was living in Canada.

They also wrote/produced LPs by Southern Exposure, Sticky Fingers, and Grand Tour. Of course the performers on these LPs were numerous, but included Wayne St. John (Canadian?) and the Duncan Sisters (also Canadian - see http://www.discomuseum.com/DuncanSisters.html).

By the way, back on topic - must add that "Tender is the night" and "Weekend two step" are by far my favourite tracks by the THP Orchestra, in fact the whole LP is great (vocals by the Duncan Sisters).

Yes, the vocals on THP #2 are much better than the LP version of "Two Hot For Love" :)

"Tender Is The Night" one of my fav. THP tracks, so classy. The LP is pretty nice too, haven't listened to it too much though. I got one of those RCA Canada coloured "marble" pressings; looks nice but unfortunately sounds like sh*t. :-?

Part of the problem with this album is that side 1 is about 24 minutes long, which is past the point where serious compromises have to be made at the mastering stage. Canadian pressings are nearly mono. US pressings on Butterfly are wide stereo, but cut at very low volume, and the surface noise is very evident even on mint copies.

That's because the vocalists on THP #2 were the Duncan Sisters.

My vinyl for that album weighs about the same as a child's bowling ball. No lie. It is very very heavy even for a vinyl record.

Are you talking about the album released on Atlantic records? The one with DANCING FOREVER on it? For some reason they used to always play the 12" version of the song on the radio over here during the late 1980's. I always thought it was a mid 1980's song until I found the album and saw the 1979 date on it.

I love "Good To Me" as well, I'd probably rate it as one of my faves. It seemed like the sound on that album had more of an edge to it than on the other THP albums, perhaps slightly more rock/pop oriented. I suppose that was pretty typical of 1979 disco. There isn't a track that I don't like on that LP.. I like the singer they used on there too, Joyce Cobb. She had this unrestrained, off-the-wall style, which I love..

    Really? :o
According to the review on this site, the two tracks on Side 1 add up to about 20:20. Does the Canadian LP have a longer version of "Tender is the night" or something? On the US release it appears to be less than 7 minutes long.

The two pressings are the same length. I don't have the album in front of me, but if I remember correctly, Weekend Two-Step is closer to 16 minutes long, and Tender is the Night is about 7 minutes or so. I might be off, but it's definitely a lot longer than most disco albums. I was quite surprised by the length when I first got it.

Ok, I'm on crack. It's under 21 minutes. Still a bit longer than ideal for disco though.

Re: THP Orchestra "Tender Is The Night"

Good To Me is a saucy cut, which is a fave of mine. In fact, that whole LP is underatted. Who Do You Love being another strong cut.

The Duncan Sisters LP is very good too. Just discovered Outside Love, and I've always loved Sadness In My Eyes.

Anyone familiar with The Ultimate Warlord LP? I think they had a hand in that too...
