What's up everybody? Another Friday has come and gone and I must say, I had fun spinning this last Friday. Good night @ Larry Holmes Ringside as the champ was preparing to leave for his fight this coming Saturday against Eric 'Butterbean' Esch. However, I have my own battle with my buddies Blaxman and Jazz Pilgrim to tend to. So with that in mind, here are some of the classics I played this week:

    Deacon Blues - Steely Dan
In the Bottle - Gil Scott-Heron
Funky Nassau - The Beginning of the end
    Lowdown - Boz Scaggs
    Street Man - Brooklyn Dreams
I like girls - The Fatback Band
Sooner or later - The Impressions
Sureshot - The Crown Heights Affair
Fly like an eagle - The Steve Miller Band
Once you get started - Rufus w/Chaka Khan

just to name a few. On the mellow side I played:

    California dreamin' - Jose Feliciano
Hey there lonely girl - Eddie Holman
You're the one for me - Switch
It's too late - Carole King
All the city lights - Tower of Power

    As you can see I was all over the place this week, but I had lots of fun. Hope these songs bring back positive memories for y'all, I know they do for me. Love to hear your comments. Till next time;

    Easy,

What a great mix of tunes!! I like Steely Dan, and I think "Deacon Blues" should've been released as a 12" single (even if it wasn't a disco song, it was over 7 minutes long). I think that song also made the national Top 20 in mid-1978.

You defintely have a lot of early 70's classics in there. One of my favorite Carole King songs besides "It's Too Late" is "Nightingale" which you never hear on the radio anymore. I like Eddie Holman's "Hey There Lonely Girl". That was an "answer" record to Ruby & the Romantics' "Hey There Lonely Boy" (1963) which I have on a greatest hits album of theirs. I also like "Funky Nassau" and "Lowdown". I have on tape old American Bandstand's that VH1 used to air years back. In an early 1977 episode, they played "Fly Like An Eagle" with everyone dancing to it. I like the ending of that song (the full-length version), plus the sound of the whole song overall.

Happy to hear you enjoyed the list. I too love Carole King with my favorite Carole King song probably being 'Jazzman'. Let me just say, I hadn't played 'Fly like an eagle' in awhile and when I first put it on, it sounded great. I really love the classic slow songs, as you can probably tell, however, it did not know 'Lonely girl' was a response record, so thanks for the info. As for Steely Dan, let me just say the 'Aja' LP from top to bottom speaks for itself.

You are so right about Steely Dan's "Aja" album. If I had to choose between "Aja" and "Can't Buy A Thrill" as what my favorite SD album would be, it would be impossible, but "Aja" is just a remarkable album. At times it seems hard to believe that this album came out in '77, especially after hearing the title track. Even though SD had shown their fusion talents throughout their albums in the 70's, "Aja" was the standout. Other cuts from that album which are also good are "Black Cow" and "Josie".

I like Carole King's "Jazzman" as well; I have that on a "Sounds of the Seventies" CD I have. My mother bought the "Tapestry" album when it was released in 1971, and I have it on cassette. Many people might not know this, but Carole's first hit song was "It Might As Well Rain Until September" in 1962. At the time, she was well known as a writer instead of a singer, having written songs for The Drifters ("When My Little Girl Is Smiling"), The Shirelles ("Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?"), Little Eva ("The Loco-Motion"). I also liked her rendition of the Shirelles' "One Fine Day" in 1980.

Steve Miller's music you could dance to at times; it had a good beat to it, especially "Take The Money And Run" and "Rock 'n Me", which I think all came off of the "Fly Like An Eagle" album.

Boz Scaggs' "Lowdown" was a crossover hit for him, but I also love "Lido Shuffle" (1977) and his 1980 songs "Look What You've Done To Me" and "Miss Sun".

'Black cow', 'Lido Shuffle', 'Rock 'n me' are all great songs which I've always enjoyed. When it comes to 'Aja' it's hard to pick one song I like on that LP more than another that's why I consider it such a great album. The title track is just as good as all the rest. I guess all these artists would be considered part of the so-called "Blue-eyed soul era". Some other artists and songs I would throw in that mix:

Hall & Oates - Sara Smile, She's gone, I can't go for that etc.
Elton John - Bennie and the Jets, Someone saved my life tonight, Philadelphia Freedom etc.
Frankie Valli - My eyes adored you, Swearin' to God (Which I also played this past Friday), Our day will come etc.
The Doobie Brothers - Takin' it to the streets, Black water etc.
Seals & Crofts - Diamond Girl, Summer Breeze
Hamilton, Joe, Frank & Reynolds - Fallin' in love (redone in '76 by New Birth)
Andy Gibb - I just want to be your everything, Shadow dancing, Love is thicker than water etc.

just to name a few off the top of my head. Can you think of others that you would add to this list of "Blue-eyed Soul"?

It was alot of fun this past week. I dig 'Sureshot' too. I always felt that whole LP was a strong comeback for The Crown Heights Affair in 1980 as I felt they had slid just a little in the late '70's after those great songs from the mid-'70's. Still one of my all-time favorite bands. By the way I debated between 'Sureshot' and 'Use your Body & Soul' which I also dig. Just a note, I didn't play Joe Bataan's version of 'In the Bottle', but rather the original by Gil-Scott Herron. However, as you stated, both are "perfect". Happy you liked the list my friend; As always I'm curious to hear comments from The Sehnores de Groove.

Oops!!! Was it a "freudian slip", maybe?
No matter, I love both versions anyway!!

BTW: That "Sure Shot" album from Crown Heights Affair is great!!! I love it!!!

    Peace

    P.S.
For sure the others "Senhores do Groove" will like the list a lot!!! Jazz should be here in a few momments (he sniffs good music from miles away) Zeca is really busy at work lately, but anytime he'll be back. Anyway I have talking with him by phone or personally and he knows what is happen here.

"Swearin' To God" by Frankie Valli was a good song; I remember hearing a very long version of this on one of Jellybean's mixes on WKTU years back. It had to have been about 9-minutes long. I think I remember reading once that "STG" was released as a promo 12" for D.J. use only in 1975, a year before 12"'s were allowed to be sold commercially. I also liked his rendition of "Our Day Will Come" in late '75. Patti Austin did background vocals on this song, as well as Valli's other mid-70's records. She also sang on Steely Dan's 1980 album "Gaucho".

As for other "blue-eyed soul" artists, the only other one I can think of is The Righteous Brothers, but their hits came in the 60's. The Walker Brothers also come to mind. I think the Brothers Gibb's "Main Course" LP (1975) was also in the "blue-eyed soul" field; "Nights On Broadway" and "Fanny" were my favorites. Seals and Crofts had a "blue-eyed soul" sound with "You're The Love" in 1978. I think this might be pushing it, but I'd also add Culture Club's "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?" and "Time" to the list; those were great songs.

Well, Sammy, you certainly did mix things up a bit last Friday!! And I like it!!

I can sniff good music from this side of the Pond!

    Starting with the funky stuff:

My favourite RUFUS track!! Definitely a case of diggin' one out from the bottom of the crate!! My memories from that one are really good!!

CHA - Sureshot - how many times have I got down to that one??

Fatback Band - I like Girls. Not only do I like girls but I like ALL Fatback Band's music!! Including this one..

I always like to contrast the Fatback Band with Kool and the Gang - in that the Fatback's Band's change from Seventies downright funky music into Eighties mellow soul was much less commercial than Kool and the Gang (and for me better), and I think with their Eighties stuff they stayed close to their roots, whilst Kool and the Gang went "pop". One of my all-time favourite bands!!!! Which gives me an idea - see later ...

Boz Scaggs/Beginning Of the End - I probably heard those two at my first (school) Disco!! Man - you know how to
bring out those memories!! Absolute gems!!
My first kiss!!! Hmm, that's another story!!!

Gil Scott Heron - In The Bottle. A Jazz Pilgrims favourite!!! Top drawer!! I love the twist in this song ..."You know it's gonna be me... Livin' in the Bottle" Powerful stuff indeed.. And Blax, you can tell Zeca that this was one of those tracks that appealed not only to the funk crowd but also to the Northern Soul crowd!! In fact, I remember it had a re-release on a Northern Soul label here in the UK I have seen Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson live, and I think their music is fantastic.

Now it gets interesting - I used to love the "Country rock / jazz " sound just before I got into Soul in a big way, and Steve Miller's "Fly Like An Eagle" was my fave tune at the time!! How did you know, Sammy?? Have you been talking to my big brother?? What a wonderful atmosphere there was in that track!!! Brilliant!! And I used to love Steely Dan as well!!

On the slow side I love that Eddie Holman track. What a great voice he had - so pure and clear.

    THE CHALLENGE - PART 2

And now for the next stage of the challenge .... I think we should go head-to-head with tracks from ONE band - and let's see who can win this time???

I am gonna be inspired by your choice and am gonna hit you with the Fatback Band

Hit'em for six!! Go JP Go!!!

    Do The Bus-Stop
    Wicki Wacki
    Spanish Hustle
    Yum Yum (Gimme Some)
    The Booty
    I like Girls
    The Girl Is Fine
    Backstrokin'
    Is this The Future
    She's My Shining Star
    I Found Lovin'

Surely, there are some truly KNOCK-OUT tracks amongst that lot!! How you gonna survive??  I bet your legs are shaking !!

Can anybody pick a band who can beat them? I think not!! :lol

    Take care, y'all!!

I love all your additions to the blue-eyed soul list. The Righteous Brothers, '60's or not, definite blue-eyed soul. Also, 'Nights on Broadway' and 'Fanny' are all-time faves of mine. I also really dig 'Do you really want to hurt me' and 'Time', both great songs. Great choices here, your tastes and mine are very similar. Thanks for the info on Patti Brooks, I did not know that; Good trivia question.

    Jazz:

Glad you liked the list and the variety I played this week. Strange how I played 'Fly like an eagle' and it was a fave of yours. Seems like we have very similar taste. Now onto the gauntlet you have thrown down with the Fatback Band. Great new idea of yours to add a twist to our on-going battle. Choose a band and list, I'm up for it; But before I do there are a couple more Fatback tracks I would add to your list:

'Gotta get my hands on money' - A Fatback favorite; and
'King Tim III (Personality Jock)' - The first unofficial rap record on wax.

Now onto my list, and for my back-up I've decided to go into battle with:

SLAVE - featuring the following funk faves:

    Slide
    Baby Sinister
    Stellar Fungk
    Just a touch of love
    Stone Jam
    Watching you
    Wait for me
    Snapshot
    Feel my love
    I'll be gone

Oh man, talk about a comeback. I think this definitely stands up to the Fatback list. I like this new idea of yours and am ready to continue to do battle, if you can recover after this shot I just gave you. Deal with it. Does Blax want any? (Haha) Enjoy.

    You can bet!!!!

    First, Fatback is great!!!
I use to say they are the kings of the groove cause most of their songs have linear beats and they just go on and on and on... perfect!! GROOVE!!! THIS is groove!!
I wish add two track that speaks for itself:

    -On The Floor
-Keep Your Fingers Out The Jam

My choosen weapon for this time is BRASS CONSTRUCTION:

    -Movin
    -We
    -Happy People
    -Get Up To Get Down
    -How Do You Do
    -Dancin
    -Breakdown
    -Express Yourself
    -Renegades

I hope this cant hurt you too seriously!! Sorry for something!

Nice move, jabbing us with the Brass. You hit me where it hurts, I love BC. I'd like to add a few to your list that fall into some of my Brass faves; They include:

    Changin'
    Ha Cha Cha
    Celebrate
    Get up
Music makes you feel like dancing
    Walkin' the line
    Can you see the light
    International

Wow, now that I look at it, I think this Brass list looks just as hot as the initial one, and that was hard to do. That just shows the power you just hit us with when you came at us with Brass Construction. Nice choice. I'll wait for Jazz's next move before I counterpunch. I have a nice combination in mind so look out.

In other words, Brass Contruction rules!!!

Wow Jazz, nice move. Coming with Roy Ayers, no complaints here buddy. You know I'm feeling Roy Ayers "The father of Acid Jazz" as 'Can't you see me' was featured as one of my treasure tracks earlier this week. Funny thing is I was planning to use 'Get on up, get on down' as a future treasure track. But, then you came with 'They call it Brooklyn' and 'Everybody loves the Sunshine', classics! Nice choice, however, you hit Blax with the low blow 'Running away'. Sorry Blax, but I love this record too. Anyway, time to retaliate. Therefore, I'm coming back with the power of a locomotive; That's right, B.T. Express! My punches include the following:

    Do it till you're satisfied
    I like it
    Peace Pipe
    Discotizer
    We got it together
    Shout it out
    Ride on B.T.
    Give up the funk
    Let me be the one

and the K.O. punch to end the flurry,

    Express

Oh man, talk about a come back. I don't know, but it seems that once you think you can't outdo yourself or your competition, in comes a band like B.T. Express. Looks like you're up Blax. Can you deal with it?

Great choice of band, Sammy!!! Seems like you're "on the right track" with BT Express!!!

Your sucker punch of "Express" - awesome. Like "Do It Till You're Satisfied" - they're almost funk standards to me!! I have not heard "Give Up The Funk" in ages - you know, I had forgotten how good that track was!! Excellent!!

But I am wondering what Blax is gonna come up with! - is he gonna "derail" us??

    Hey,

You are so boastful today.......and with all the reasons I must say!!

Jazz: Roy Ayers is a great "weapon"!! But that "Doo Bee Doo" song makes you lost some points in my scoreboard!!

Sammy: You son of a "beauty"!!! BT Express!! Let me take a breath.......BT is deep black music!! I LOVE IT!!!!!

To answer the question quoted above:

Yes, I will certainly derail you both!!

My choosen band for make this is......The JB's!!!! YEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!

    The tracks:
    JB's Monorail
    Doin' To Death
    Hot Pants Road
    Blow Your Head
    Gimme Some More
    Soul Power
    The Grunt
    Hang out and Hustle

    And...to finish you:

All Aboard the Soul Funky Train

The list could be much much larger than this, but.......I think it's not necessary, huh?

    Peace

    P.S.
Try another tranport. The train is full!!!

And I thought you were going to choose Celine Dion!!

You have put me in the perfect party mood for Friday nite! I thank you for that!!

Gimme Some More - the BEST AND FUNKIEST FUNK RECORD IN THE WORLD!!  For me anyway! They should make a 2 hour remix of that one!! It would still be too short!

And SOUL POWER '74 is right behind it!! When I saw Maceo Parker blow live on that track, it was breath-taking!! That is another Friday nite fave track for me..

Your taste this time around Blax - Brass C and now the JBbs - is second to none! You are THE MAIN MAN!!

    BUT
I will have to get you back for that Doo-Be_Doo comment!! I will win...

The Soul Train is now running non-stop to London!!

BTW Pity that Chelsea will have to teach Middlesbrough and Juninho a lesson !!

Oh, oh. Blax you have definitely come on strong with your first two outings. Brass C, then The JB's. Talk about funk and soul. You definitely caught me off guard with your last choice and what a good one it was. I'm diggin' 'Gimme some lovin' too, so it looks like you have Jazz and I on the ropes since we both loved your choice. However, after a long weekend, I spent yesterday relaxing and preparing for just this sort of comeback by you. Therefore, when Jazz chimes in with his third installment, lookout because "here we come blazing hot". Take that as a clue.

Okay Jazz, nice move. Not only did you go with the Professor, however, I also noticed you went with the students too with the classic KO punch of 'Rock Creek Park'. (Nice shot) By the way, 'Change', 'Dominoes', 'Places and Spaces' etc. that whole LP alone is a "KO".
However, it is now time to get things heated and nothing gets you more hot than the sun. That's right, with one of the most underrated bands from that era I'm hitting you guys with the following from "SUN":

    Sun is here
Dance, do what you wanna do
    Long drawn out thing
    I had a choice
    Radiation level
Reaction satisfaction (Jam y'all, funk it up)
    Slamm bamm of funk
Space ranger (Majic's in the air)

Oh, oh; I think I caught you and Blax off guard with this move. Granted they are not considered the powerhouse that some of the previous rounds may have produced, yet I think this list of gems does enough damage to get you two to stand up and take notice. What, if anything do you have to say about that Blax and Jazz? Can you deal with it?

    Easy,

    Sam "ALL JAM
