    Two Tons O' Fun Question...

I don't know if anyone who browses ebay has noticed, but it seems almost anything by the Two Tons O' Fun (not the newer Weather Girls fame) is bidding up quite high. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with the 12" single they did "Just Us" if this was a hit or not?

"Just Us" was part of their first LP which went to #2 in 1980 on the Billboard Disco chart. It's more of a "morning tempo" (around 105 bpm, I think)...played at Trocadero certainly. I don't know about elsewhere.

The 4:39 version is on "Club Classics: Give Your Body Up, Vol. 2"

"Just us" is still played heavily on NYC radio. It's still a staple for Saturday night parties and even can be heard on PM rotation.

Did those two ladies come up with that name for themselves, or did their producer or manager think a name like that would be catchy because of their weight? I mean implying that each lady weighed a ton!? I guess that's why they changed it to the Weather Girls.

I believe Martha Wash was Originally discoverd By Sylvester for backup vocals in songs like Disco Heat/Mighty Real & I am sure others as well. I think she was originally a Gospel singer in a local church when she was sort out by Sylvester. There is a site I cant recall right now with the details to these events.

"Earth Can Be Just Like heaven" is quite nice too....I think "I Got The Feeling" was the big tune they had though no? It was a little two Hi-Nrg for me.

I've seen an out of print 2-on-1 CD on Ace Records with both of their Two Tons.. albums that can get a bit pricey now. Needless to say, I wish I had a copy *sigh*

I bet Sylvester came up with that
I think the name change came about because someone else had a trademark or copyright on "Two Tons O' Fun," hence why some of their reissues are credited to "The Two Tons" instead, not that's that's any more PC :P

I bookmarked some links to a little background on Sylvester and the gals :

I remember when It's Raining Men came out, Martha & Izora had the option of keeping the name Two Tons of Fun, it was the producer of the record who recommended the name change strictly to promote the record.

I remember hearing that they performed at Pipeline on Lansdown Street in Boston, and heard they had to reinforce the stage to make sure these ladies wouldn't crash through it. They were big girls, which I think added to the quality of their vocal sound.
