A Sex Pistols 12 inch ?

I thought it was some sort of phony latter day re-release when I found this 12" recently :

HOLIDAY IN THE SUN b/w SATELLITE by the Sex Pistols on Virgin

..... but it turns out to be a valid seventies era pressing.
So, The Sex Pistols incorporated the 12" format for one of their releases way back in 1977 ..... when 12 inchers were typically equated with disco . Were other punk acts also releasing material on 12 inch ? I don't recall this as being the case, but then again I wasn't paying that much attention ....

The 12 inch format was too good to be ignored. I know I have some early original Joy Division 12" singles, but probably from 79-80 so your 12" at 1977 is early indeed.

In many cases this was done purely for marketing reasons, so fans of Rock / Punk / Indie bands would buy the additional format, even though, in many cases, it was exactly the same version as the 7".

I remember being mailed a copy of The Who's 'Substititue' (re-released, of course) in 1976 - the first of many non-dance 12"ers I received. Even some dance releases in the UK were exactly the same length on 12" as on 7" back then. It was all about the record companies generating further sales via the novelty factor.

I've got some pop/rock 12 inch with the same version as the 7" They are promotion copies that i got back then. I think they were more aimed for "Radio Jocks" than dance DJ:s.

I haven't got Sex Pistols but some Post Punk like Joy Division as mentioned by Bernie.

When KATE BUSH's fifth album (HOUNDS OF LOVE) came out in 1986, 4 seven inch singles appeared.

I was surprised to see the same 4 singles in 12 inch form. I was even more surprised because they were not CLUB oriented.

I kept wondering why to do a 12 inch that has not "dancing" in mind ??

The first 12" was RUNNING UP THAT HILL. The remix was inferior to the album version and less danceable, because they kept "destroying" the melody line, by filling it with instrumental gaps.

The second was CLOUDBUSTING. The 12 inch was also inferior to the album mix. This 12" also lacked the melody line in parts. Besides this song was even less danceable than the first single.

The 3rd was HOUNDS OF LOVE. Not a remix, but a re-recording of a melodic-pop-rock-with string quartet song.

The last one (THE BIG SKY) had a remix that could be danceable, but right in the middle of the song there was a stop in which Kate reads the scientific names of types of clouds (cummulus castellos, etc...).

For us Kate Bush fans these four 12ers were heaven. But being a disco fan too, I kept wondering: Why release non-danceable-inferior-to-album-remixes ??????????
