The popular mid-tempo Fat Larrys Band track 'Act Like You Know' had a 'soundalike' track in '82 by The Whatnauts called 'Help is on the Way'. I always preferred this to the FLB track. Does anyone remember it & is it available on a compilation CD anywhwere?
Also, does anyone know (or care!) if this was the same Whatnauts who did 'Girls' with the Moments.

The Whatnauts - Help is on the Way was released in 1981 and Fat Larry's Band - Act like you know was released in 1982. You can get Act Like You Know from the Unidisc label as a 12" single/CD single, if you search.
Keep the faith and everything will come your way as time marches on!

    Hey Steely Dan (great nick!),

Yes, it is the same group that recorded GIRLS with THE MOMENTS (a/k/a RAY, GOODMAN & BROWN). I have here in my collection a double CD called THE DEFINITIVE WHATNAUTS COLLECTION. It was edited by DEEP BEATS in England and it contains all the 3 albums the group recorded: REACHING FOR THE STARS, WHATNAUTS ON THE ROCKS and INTRODUCING THE WHATNAUTS. There's some single tracks never released on albums on the CD too, like the one you've mentioned, HELP IS ON THE WAY. The double CD contains the full version of the song (seven minutes and twenty seconds). You're right, HELP IS ON THE WAY uses the same bass line of ACT LIKE YOU KNOW. I prefer the WHATNAUTS record too.

BTW, a friend of mine have the 12" of HELP IS ON THE WAY and I borrowed it from him just to record the B side, the instrumental version of HELP IS ON THE WAY. This song played a lot on the parties of SENHORES DO GROOVE here in Brasil.

I hope this post helped you in some way.

    Peace,

zeca azevedo, help is on the way indeed

For ages, I'd been trying to remember the track that was similar to the wonderful "Act Like You Know"!!

Looks like you've just answered my question!!

BTW I heard the WHATNAUTS with "Jack-in-the-Box" last night on the radio (Capital Gold soul show). Haven't heard that one in a while!! Happy memories of school discos!!

If it moves - funk it!!
