    PARLIAMENT/FUNKADELIC or OHIO PLAYERS

Here's one way I make a distinction with these bands. With P/F I think of songs my mind must be tripping on and I'm doing bong hits with tha fellas.
Ohio Players is the smooth joint I'm doing with a babe before we hit the sack
Of course I always prefer the latter. I do like One Nation and Chocolate City but I really love Honey, Sweet Sticky Thing, and Skin Tight 8)

Now, this is a good comparison, especially since both were on the same label (Westbound) and then moved on to more commercial success after changing labels. If you're basing it on songs that are listenable or crossover to the pop charts, The Ohio Players come out ahead. But if you're talking about funk power and dirty soul, then Parliament Funkadelic comes out way ahead.

Personally, I'd pick Parliament Funkadelic because I love their early 70's material. That psychedelic funk vibe they had going was unparalleled.

Also Both groups left Westbound for a Polygram conglomerate.

Honestly, I totally hate Parliament's Westbound stuff. And dislike the Ohio player's on that label even more. How "Ecstacy"-just a hook is way overrated. The later big hits of Parliament and Funkadelic were solid but they could never do a slowjam.

About 4 cuts off of each Ohio Players Lp on Polygram was outstanding. Tracks like "Heaven must be like this", "Alone", "Far-east Mississippi", "I want to be free", and Serenade for a jive turkey" could be compared to the major hits which everybody knows.
After Contradiction, there was a steady decline in quality. They later signed with Arista in 1979 and with Boardwalk in the 1980's. I think those tracks didn't have the 'recognizable edge' of their earlier work.

Ohio players all the way!! What non-charting track by Parliament blows you out of the water?

taking a look at both groups.... the colaboration that Paul picked was fitting... but I bet he knows who i'm picking :P

I have all the early Funkadelic LP's and just a few of Parliament. I really really have to be in the mood to listen to the tracks... Although Parliament had most of the hits... the best laid out jams come from Funkadelic. How could you not like ONE NATION UNDER A GROOVE or (NOT JUST) KNEE DEEP when they first came out...???

Because Ohio Players were a complete band along with slow songs and with the best LP covers that you just couldn't wait to see by each release, it's not that hard for me to choose them over the latter. I disagree with Eddie... because I liked ECSTASY and I also liked CLIMAX along with PAIN on the Westbound Label. I must've played out the groove on the 7" version of SKIN TIGHT because it was my favorite song to come out of 1974 and listening to it way into 1975 on a daily basis. My favorite LP by them is their very last Studio recording Mercury release ANGEL. (as far as liking the most songs from) I like every song on that LP over all the others. (strange, huh?)

From Angel, I dug Body Vibes and the title cut. I didn't really like O-H-I-O. I thought it should've been more of a regional hit.

    I love each group.

efunk_adelic, "Angel" was not Ohio Players' last merrcury album; after that was "Mr. Mean" and then the next one, "Jazz-Ay-Lay-Dee" was their last for mercury before "Everybody Up" for Arista.

Eddie, what did Parliament release on Westbound? I thought their first album was "Osmium" and my CD of that is by EMI. Then "Up For The Down Stroke" was on Casablanca.
