    You sly puss, remicks...

I know I read that before-- but I am at a loss to find the source. I read that producer Hal Davis plied Miss Ross with her fave liquor at the time--which I recall as being something like Courvoissier (sp??)....and now I cannot find that passage in any reference book!!!!!!!! I've been looking!!!

I do think she was drunk and looser than ever in the second part of the song. :D

Well, if ya don't wanna reveal the story now--I guess I can wait--but I recall reading this in my own home and now I'll be damned if I can find the book that recounted this tale!!!

Berry Gordy thought "Hangover" was suitable for Diana Ross, but she was cool. "She said she didn't want to do it, she didn't like disco," remembers (producer Hal) Davis. "She had just had her baby, she came in moody, and didn't really want to get into anything. So we got her a little taste of vodka-- she's a vodka drinker-- and she sat back, kicked her shoes off, and said "Well, I'll go out and give it a try.'"

Earlier, Davis had instructed engineer Russ Terrana to set up a strobe light in the studio. "She got into it: her eyes were flashing, the strobe was flashing, the vodka was tasting better... you could have sworn there was a party going on! That's why it was a smash."

Above quote from Number One R&B Hits.

discodjinn told most of it from my same source
but I think the whole story is worth telling .....so ....

"A dram of brandy, a splash of vodka, and ---presto----Hal Davis mixed Diana Ross's most successful R&B ( DISCO ) cocktail since "AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH"
Motown producer Davis was thirsting for a hit as 1975 drew to a close ."I needed a smash right away" he recalls, "because The Jacksons had left and everybody said, 'Well,it's over. Hal doesn't have the group , what's he going to do ?'"

Hearing a demo of "LOVE HANGOVER" in a colleague's office , Davis learned that Marilyn Mcleod was its co-author. "I called Marilyn and said, " Hey , I like the tune. I want to cut it tonight."

Davis recorded the track at the Paramount studios in Los Angeles. "I went in ,two o'clock in the morning and bought everyone a shot of Remy Martin, " he says. Shaking (not stirring ) the twin -tempo groove were Joe Sample on keyboards , James Gadson on drums, and Henry Davison on bass. Dave Blumberg and Clay Drayton handled the arrangement.
Even so , some of the musicians didn't taste the spirit. "They didn't want to go uptempo with it. I had to fight." Davis contends. "Joe didn't like the idea when I broke up with the vamp there and went into the disco thing."

to be continued ...including " She (Diana) didn't like disco" ....

....drunken lady sings the disco .... (hmm .... I see a biographical movie script here )

    ... continued....

The distinctive guitar run that pumped the tune's up-tempo segment was overdubbed later by Art Wright, who would perform similar services on a later Hal Davis project "DON'T LEAVE ME THIS WAY"... ( !!!!! )

It was Motown capo Berry Gordy who thought "LOVE HANGOVER" suitable for Diana Ross , but she was cool. "She said she didn't want to do it , she didn't like disco," remembers Davis. "She had just had her baby, she came in moody , and really didn't want to get into anything. So we got her a little taste of vodka .... she's a vodka drinker ... and she sat back , kicked her shoes off, and said ."Well, I'll go out and give it a try."

Earlier , Davis had instructed engineer Russ Terana to set up a strobe light in the studio. "You see, I play with the mind, set the mood. Diana got in there, started singing. She said. 'It sounds pretty good'.

"She got into it. Her eyes were flashing, the vodka started tasting better, the engineer was popping. There were only three of us sitting there , but you would have sworn there was a party going on. That's why it was a smash."

But only after the discos --- and a cover version by The Fifth Dimension --- forced Motown's hand. The label was promoting another track fron the singer's Diana Ross album , and Berry wanted to stay the course. Then The 5th Dimension single hit the market. Gordy capitulated, his staff scrambled--- one executive remembers the hastily-called Saturday promotion meeting --- and the Ross single was rush released, quickly drowning out the competition.

uh, I don't think so...Ross recorded it first, Pam Sawyer & Marilyn McLeod were Motown staff writers... it was released as an LP cut, discos started playing it, a 2nd single from the LP was released, 5th Dimension covered "LH" and released a single, Motown, not wanting to get left in the dust, hurriedly rushed Diana's single of "Love Hangover" to compete...both charted the same week on Billboard...then Diana left 5th D in the dust.....

Fred Bronson; Billboard Book of Number One Hits:
“she [Miss Ross] rebounded with a number one single [“Mahogany”]…for a follow-up, Motown went with another ballad “I Thought It Took a Little Time (But Today I Fell in Love).” The first single from the DIANA ROSS LP, it was moving slowly up the chart when people began to take notice of another track on the album, “Love Hangover.”

Among those taking notice were the Fifth Dimension, who had reorganized since the departure of Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr. Signed to ABC Records, the Dimension released a single of “Love Hangover.”

Motown reacted quickly by rushing out Diana’s single. Both versions entered the Hot 100 on April 3, 1976; Diana debuted at 78 and the Fifth Dimension came in at 95. Three weeks later the Fifth Dimension had peaked at number 80.”

Ross , of course went to #1 POP & #1 Soul and #1 Disco on Record World...Billboard had it #1 on several of it's charts (LA, Melody Shops)...but in the Disco Compilation Consensus of those charts [combining all the charts into one consensus chart] it was #1 for 4 weeks against very stiff competition from the Andrea True Connection, Donna Summer, Vicki Sue Robinson & The Trammps, each vying for the top spot with classic records!!! __________________

It's a good effort & interesting to hear, thanx remmy, but nobody could ever better the Ms. Ross version - her vocals are so elegant & I prefer the real strings to the 5D's synthesised ones.

    good observation , one I hadn't figured out !!

That ties into our other discussion Dee, ... some analytical review can not only help us appreciate why we like a song .... but also ...why we don't .:icon_mrgreen:

And without the clever usage of the moody ,sultry, mind-fogging strings found in Miss Ross' version .. the Fifth's --- while still a good version .... (IMO) those missing strings remove much of the mentioned sweetness of this savored love hangover . :icon_razz:
