    Chic Soup for one 12"

    Hi
Can anybody tell me if the 12" of Soup for one by Chic is actually a longer version than the LP. I know the 12" says 7.58 which is longer but what are the main extended bits? Sometimes these 12" timings are misprints and I get all excited for nothing, the LP version is 5 and a bit minutes. The 12" of Carly Simon's Why from the Soup for one album is fantastically remixed and extended, is the Soup for one 12" similar?

    Your help is appreciated
    Cheers

    Thanks!
But what I asked was whether anybody actually knew this for sure as timings printed on the label of some records are misprints. Somebody out there must have this 12".

The 12" of Soup For One is in fact seven minutes; the flip side is the three minute radio edit.

Details: The long version kicks off with the one measure of drum intro, then cuts to a segment of the keyboard solo, then adds a little guitar riff not on the original, before proceeding with the vocals. In the middle, following the full layered keyboard solo, there is a variation of the keyboard-guitar riff plus piano and drums before continuing with the chorus. A long instrumental section at the end continues the repeating of the guitar riff before the chorus resumes.

I'm a huge Chic fan and have to say that I never thought the extended version improved on the original. No real tension is built or released, only little hooks are added over long repetitions, and none of the riffs is especially a showcase for the musicians. However, I had to have the 12" to complete my collection of every version of a Chic track ever released. I'd say to you, base your decision to acquire on your need to be a completist rather than on any hopes for a great version.

    Zef,

I prefer the 12" over the LP or 7" mix anyday... however when I put it on a compilation CD... I get sick of it pretty quickly and have to skip the track... shelve it for a couple a years... then I can't get enough of it after playing it 10 days in a row 4 times. am I insane?
