Giorgio Moroder talks about his debut LP Knights in White S

I’ve had some problems with this LP. First because I’ve never been a great singer and I tried to do my best. And also because the spelling of the title track had been consciously changed by Neil without having me knowing about its meaning at the time. I didn’t know that the gay community was effectively targeted. I guess I’ve understood the allusion a bit later as I’ve been given the translation of the word (knight).

    Giorgio Moroder :)

I don't get it. Can someone of our gay fellows explain this to me?

    Is it "Knights"?

I didn't get it either, vs. Don't know what "Knights" has to do with being gay. I do understand that the original by the Moody Blues was "Nights in White Satin" and then someone "cleverly" retitled it "Knights in White Satin" for the Giorgio record. He seemed unaware that this had been done--or at least he says someone else (Neil Bogart) changed the title. How that makes it "GAY" I can't fathom.

Or maybe it's just that it makes the song about "MEN" instead of a dark time of the day.

"Knights in Black Leather" I'd get. :P

Yeah, the only gay thing about it that I know of is the album cover of Giorgio's. My friends see this one and flat-out refuse to believe me when I tell them that Mr. Moroder is straight.

Never thought about the change in title but I just got this vinyl last week as it was always the one 'missing' in my Giorgio pack. SNOOOOOOOZE...

Oh poor Giorgio ........ he didn't get the pun when he posed for the cover ...... ..... dressed in white satin being oogled in a steam room!! by five young bucks ... also dressed in white satin !!! :P

This cover is a good companion for a later album ..... Double Exposure's LOCKER ROOM .....similar setting ..... but forget the white satin ..... how about four young bucks dressed in .... jock straps !! :P

knights in white jock straps ....

Although it seems unlikely people like Moroder in the soft-porn recording industry could be so unaware of gay themes in their songs, packaging, and delivery, we have to remember that Bogart WAS manically driven to creative ways of promoting Casablanca product, and Donna Summer even seemed innocent of the gay camp content of her mini-musical in '77, song titles such as "Queen For A Day," "Fairy Tale High," "If You Got It, Flaunt It," and "Rumour Has It" notwithstanding.

A pic from old Georgio in the 80's while working on the "Neverending Story". I've never seen him like this.

And 1 of the first ever of him as an artist:

I looked at the cover photo again--and it does have a very bathhouse/steamroom theme--so I guess that was the GAY content. Although I don't think anyone ever wore white satin to a bathhouse back in tha day....OK, I take that back... maybe Miss Midler when she performed at the Continental Baths... :P

I think maybe Barry Manilow would've worn white satin as her pianist in the Baths!

Amazing ...wouldn't you think there'd be the interest between Giorgio and Cerrone to have some lunches together ( can you arrange this Videoskooter !? :-? 8) ) Now those would be conversations to overhear .... Too bad they've never tried to connect ....odd ...

And it sounds like through all their years with Casablanca ...Jacques Morali and Moroder ...never met . What crazy wild times ....everyone was too busy I guess ....
but I like to think of those occassional times at the Casablance offices in Hollywood where all these various people were roaming the halls..
" Look there goes Donna with Victor Willis .... nice to see you Gene Simmons ( and the rest of you Kissers ) ... hey Meco, wanna go get some coffee " ...

Interesting, Graham, that you state Giorgio Moroder is straight. I had heard for YEARS that he was gay and enjoyed the company of very young men....even BOYS.

How do you have your info that Moroder is straight???

And 1 of the first ever of him as an artist:

I thought "Son of my Father" was his first solo album. Anyway, I admire Moroder for acknowledging that singing isn't his main strength.....whenever I listen to the "Knights" album I often think about how much more impact the songs would have had performed by a more melodic/stronger vocalist (though I think the songs are so good even weak vocals don't completely dull their impact). As for the "bathhouse" cover, I never quite understood how it was related to the music inside, but I was nonetheless puzzled when the jazz/rock group Blood, Sweat and Tears released an album with an identical cover ("No Sweat"). I can only assume these covers are meant to stand out among others....

yet another steam room photo to add to the collection
and "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" might be considered by a few to be an early "disco" pop song.
