It's a timely issue because I recently re-read an article in Rolling Stone about people who were sued by the RIAA for downloading. Some were forced to pay thousands of dollars, including people who had not downloaded anything PERSONALLY, but their children and other people in their households had. If you're wondering how the RIAA identifies who downloads, they subpoena your ISP. I'm not saying this to scare anyone but I just wondered if everyone was aware of this. It's never concerned me personally up until this point because I hadn't seen anything on the net I was interested in downloading (how much rap, teen pop and Metallica can one take?) But classic disco on the net would at least get my attention. I still wouldn't download it though, I'm waaaaaay too cute for jail.

Also which is the convertion rate? My experience tells me that anything below 256kbps in mp3 format is so compressed that high frequency is all lost.

Last night I bought the entire "Brazil" and "African Queens" albums. So here's some pertinent info:
The format is AAC @128kbps.
I'm certainly no fan of compressed music file formats, but since these are not on CD I decided to take the plunge. Played them through a good system at a decent volume and while they're not up to my usual standards they actually sounded petty good. Best news is that these releases sound as though they were taken from the original master tapes and are not vinyl transfers as with many CDs.
My main gripe is that some of these tracks flow from one to the other and AAC does not play gapless. For the price, I'm not complaining and I can burn to CD and play that if I need to.
Indie Release [Level 4]
I downloaded AFRICAN QUEENS--Since I use apple lossless, this sounded a bit saturated and distortion was present. C+
I can't take the songs cutting off with dead air due to the digital download on the medley from side one. I wish this would come out on CD.
I remember playing this at the club and watching the dance floor thin out as the medley progressed.

Not being able to hear the medley's played without a gap is ruining the experience as I noted earlier, but easily fixed if you burn it to CD and set a gap of 0 in the prefs. You can also print out a CD insert with the cover art and tracklisting.

128 bitrate?? Sheese! That is shitty. My suggestion, if you have the original lps, good equiptment and the records are in near mint condition, just record the entire LP in one .wav file. Do the surface noise removal and restoration in cool edit pro, cue the tracks up right and cut the wav files apropriatly, then burn the wavs direct to CDR and walla, you got something sounding 100xs better and all it costs is about 2 hours of your time

are you happy with the quality of the CDs? I read in the type that it only removes "some" of a record's pops and clicks.

It's not great, but keep in mind that this is AAC, not MP3. AAC fares much better at lower bitrates than any MP3 encoder.
I'd still like to see lossless downloads though.

so you DO consider it to be worth the money? Is any other software necessary to remove all the clicks and pops? What I want to do is transfer a group of my favorite disco albums onto CDs (I'm referring to albums that are not currently available on CD and I doubt they ever will be) then use a printer to shrink the cover and basically make my own personal CD collection of my favorite disco albums. And if I'm not being too personal, could you let me know why you prefer the Phono CD recorder to using your computer to do the transfers? I simply can not master the software available to do the transfers and can't find anyone to help me, that's why I need the Phono CD recorder. Thanks.

While it isn't the bargain that it used to be (back the pre-Adobe, Cool Edit days), it's still very much worth the money. To do this with Waves plug-ins would cost thousands of dollars. However, it's not easy to do well. It takes a lot of time and experience to get great results.
Some people use other plug-ins, but I do it entirely in Audition.
That is exactly what I do, right down the record label.
Not sure what you mean by this... I do record directly to my computer, using Audition to capture the signal. I have an M-Audio 2496 card which gives better sound than consumer or gaming cards. By recording in 32-bit float, I can adjust the levels, apply corrective EQ (i.e. gradual treble boost to offset mastering treble cut), expand the stereo image (if I can verify that the disc was mastered with the image narrowed), and precisely set track start and end points. Dither down to 16-bit and burn the disc, and I'm set.

thanks for all the info, I appreciate it. I did a google search to see what Audition was all about, but it appears to be another piece of software I'd buy an quickly get frustrated trying to master (the Roxio CD creator, the DAK music system turned out to be far beyond the ability of a computer novice like myself). The Phono CD recorder seems to be my only alternative...

Apple has to renegotiate with the various record companies for every country. Furthermore, the selection varies by country as well -- iTunes Canada is the cheapest (after figuring in currency differences), but it also has the smallest available catalog. Canadians cannot buy from the US iTunes store and vice-versa.

Bernie: I wasn't implying that these downloads were illegal, I was just mentioning the fact that the lawsuits are still happening. I've seen several people on my local news programs who have been sued, including a grandmother who did not download at all, but her grand daughter did and didn't mention it. The grandmother was sued because her internet service contract was in her name. I personally have just decided to avoid all downloads, legal or not. And on this subject, I HAVE indeed seen the Ritchie Family's "Brazil" album on CD as part of a 2fer.

Zef: you sure said a mouthful when you say that a download is not the same as having the album or CD, because many of the Ritchie Family recordings have really striking artwork and to me that was a big part of their appeal. No darn download will replace that, though the music itself is incredible.
