Hey DJ Phil. Reading you strong posts about your strong opposition to MP3 sharing, to a certain extent I agree with some of your points.

However there is this rare disco music issue. Because I live in Australia, a lot of the rarer disco is out of my reach because in the 70's we were more into rock and just the disco hit songs only. Yes there are rare disco records here and there in Australia, but not as much as in USA and UK. In Wollongong the main record pools are The Salvation Army op shop, Smith Family store, Dusty Guitars and a book shop in Crown Street. Dusty Guitars is a great place for finding rare rock/heavy metal albums of the 70's and 80's but rarely do I find anything disco related. At the book shop most of the records there are 80's pop. At the Salvation Army and Smith Family the records there are mostly crappy old farts music such as classical, brass marching bands, hyms, country and western, finger clicking broadway music and opera. And with the 45s it's mostly pop that gets belted on radio. Mind you I've gotten some rare disco from these outlets but not as much as I would get if I lived in USA. And I've raved on about the importing records issue. The only way I could get the songs is on MP3, but I do prefer the record/CD as the sound quality is much better. If I was living in USA or UK, it wouldn't be too hard for me to find a good disco/funk record pool and buy all of the music I want with the limit of what I have in my wallet but in Australia disco/funk record pools are scarce.

Now I can't help but feeling really mad when I read your comment "turn on your radio!". I'm not mad at you but the comment makes me really pissed off. Reason being is because we have **** radio stations. Most of them play modern lollypop music that teenagers listen to or death metal stations like Triple J. And with alternative there's only rare rock stations, no rare disco/funk stations or atleast not in the area I live. And on the AM band, there is only horse race crap and boring country music stations. But the worse bit is the disco playlists on our retro radio stations. They play the same bloody mainstream disco songs over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. And they are the typical "Stayin' Alive", "Knock On Wood", "That's The Way I Like It", "YMCA", "Boogie Fever" type of music and I've already got those on record/CD. Their variety of disco/funk is so narrow that even songs like "Keep On Jumpin'" by Musique, "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" are considered undeground music in Australia as I've never heard them on retro radio. I haven't listened to the radio in 2 years because I know they are just going to play the same stuff over and over again. I even suggested rare disco songs to one of the stations and they told me that they tend to stick to what made the charts and they don't even have a lot of the songs I mentioned in their CD/record library, talk about lack of variety. When it comes to rock our retro stations are good, but when it comes to disco they really suck.

Also my mother told me when she was growing up in the 70's, they played the hit songs and people only cared about the hit songs and didn't give a **** about the rest. And when she went to discos they played mostly the hit songs. From what I gather we were only exposed to hit songs. Many great disco songs charted very poorly in Australia too eg Commodores "Machine Gun", it topped at 95 on the pop charts whereas it topped at 22 in USA and 20 in UK. These facts really piss me off.

There is a Good Groove disco/funk store in Sydney, and I've been there once, however the prices of the records are very steep ranging from $10 to $60 per record and I'm not rich. When I went I was hoping to come back loaded but I came back with hardly anything and I spent nearly $100 there, plus my mother freaks out when I blow too much money on records. That's also my frustration. When I bid for too many records on Ebay my mother freaks out because of the shipping costs and the Australian dollar sucks for value in the US. Reason she freaks is because we don't get a lot of income and we always get bills. You can see why I'm so frustrated. If I did blow a lot of money I wouldn't be able to pay my bills. Right now I can't afford squat **** because I have to pay over $500 rego on my car and over $400 for my phone bill and plus since my brother has got a job the rent for the house has doubled. That adds to my frustration because I really want to order some Kay Gees CDs from Amazon.com .

It's going to be a while before I'm able to get my hands on more rare disco music I really want but if I see the records for the songs I've downloaded I will certainly buy them.

The only solution I can think of to this MP3 sharing dilemma is by making them pay sites and the money goes out to the artists that recorded the songs. However it would mean getting a credit card and hackers could hack your credit card details.

The other option is if there's more sites like funk45.com that allow users to submit samples of their rare records and record details so people can listen and if they like them they can hunt them down and buy them.

Anyhow I very much prefer to own the record/CD than the MP3, but if the only way of me getting certain songs is from MP3 then so be it. Yes it's stealing but what other options are there if the record you want is no where to be found or so damn difficult to find.

Sorry to hear it's hard to find 'Disco' music 'down under'. I have found alot of rare/out of print 'Disco' on 'E-Bay'. At least with buying one copy of a song on one of the Auction Sites does alot less harm than 'thousands downloading the music for free from the 'www'.

Hello Markydefad, Don't worry about any 'future' postings from me. I no longer wish to argue/debate a topic, have someone post a flippant insult'/thier point and have Bernie close a topic. I have given up on this site/music style. Today is the day the music died (at least in my opinion). Good day and good bye.

    Jeez Louise,

People sure are gettin' their panties in a bunch around here.

I personally don't care if the argument continues ad infinitum--BUT, face it, no one is making any converts to either side of the issue, so maybe giving it a rest would be wise? Just my opinion.

"The day the music died"???!!!

All I can say is "Bye, bye, Miss American Pie"!!!!!!!!!

The day the music died was when they shut down Audiogalaxy.

However, if you lived in San Francisco the day the music died was when the Troc closed.

The music lives on in my apartment in Hollywood!!!!!!

I'm listening to that Nuyorican Soul CD.

Face it, for most of us the music died sometime in the early 1990's. Every so often something with a melody and a good beat slips through the cracks--BUT for the most part, we're living in the past, to quote Jethro Tull (a major influence on Disco, right?!!!)

I agree with those who no longer want to discuss this topic. It is old and tiresome. However, I still would like DJ Phil to respond to my comments on the downloading issue. As usual, I don't want a fight. I simply would like some answers. As to the comments in question, go to my last two posts on the "no more free music" thread.

Oops, I just noticed that DJ Phil said that he won't be posting here anymore, so I shouldn't be expecting him to answer my questions. My bad.

By the way, I don't think the music will ever die.

I must say I try to respect him

But his arguements where like the
South (Republicans) US Arguements for Slave Trade

    The DJ's (the choosen people)
they should be allowed to trade, give copy use and whatever music they feel like the rarer the better....

While the Rest of Us (The Laboring Majority)
should buy all the records so we can feed both the record companies hungry mouths and the DJ's ofcourse.

And We should just ignore all the consipiring and the monopolisation and attempts to control this artform by the Majors (Record COmpanies)

    as peope have mentioned
And Pretend Like they DO NOT EXSIST?!?!?!

I am sure that if DJ P would voice his opinions to the listners at the clubs he was playing....
he would get a very mixed response.....

I am Allowed to Trade, Share, Give and Take.
But you all shall pay for the Same Music...

the biggest Newspapers have realiezed that the best way to have a succesful homepage on the web is to print all their news for free on the web

And NOT SELL THEM LIKE THEY DO WITH NEWSPAPERS

Because it generates enough traffic anyway...

    Anyway the reason
this WHole Free Music movement has gone so far
is not of people's freebie personalities
most of us have grown up in a capitalistic society so we understand the principles

But Because of the Record Companies
    Greed wanting to control everything
I bet you their not releasing all those old songs because
They are still waiting to re-negotiate the royalites with the minor labels and the Artsists
INorder for the Majors to get an even bigger share......

Anyways The whole issue with Copywritting music to me is sick
I am of the Lennon opinion
if John Lennon would be alive to die
he would make a song about Michael Jackson
    close to the one
    Zappa did about Bobby Brown

Sutnop didn't that thinking die when the WALL came down in the U.S.S.R.? I guess newspaper do it as it is news plus there are 'AD's' on thier sites. Ummm.. I guess you download the newspaper into your MP3 player, burn a few copies-I know you don't do that with a paper. But I am sure you and many others do it with stolen music. I must agree with DJ Phil, buy it don't steal it. If the artists or the companies don't re-release it, it is still thiers.

I won't Beat the dead horse on this arguement.....

But this has nothing to do with USSR

    Besides Believe it or not
I am what you call right wing in my country

fighting for the individual freedom of every citizen

But If there is anything that can make me a marxist is if you mix politics with my notion of file sharing......

    Anyway
I can say I am very thankful for the people that created
    Napster
    AG
    Morpheus
    WInmx
    etc....

Since they have deepend the insight of music of not only me
    but the whole majority

Just the other day I was at a party and
They had a Computer tuned into the stereo some people where downloading Shakira the usual boring music from the Kazaa
was I got a seat at the Keyboards and Stereo
    equipment
I got them started with a bit of Earth Wind and Fire and Jackson 5
moved on to Kool and the Gang, Vicky Sue Robinson and Evelyn C Champagne King,
Then Playing them rare grooves from the
Rick James and Teena Marie I'm just a Sucker For you love, Stevie Wonder Master Blaster, etc...
they were discovering a new deepth a new horizon and with the alchohol and other substances it was almost like a spiritual experience seeing their thankfulness
I felt like I had given them deepth into their shallow music taste, which made me very happy........

And that is why I can't fight
to try to get things back to the sorry state they were in 85-95
    Where the Tracks Chart
    Basically decided what was hot
    and what was not
