Talking of which, Is this track released on CD at all, especially the long version?
A tough question-- does anyone recall when Fantastic Johnny C's "Don't Depend On Me" was released in '73? If not the month, then the time of year you were boogying to it? Many thanks for jogging your memory!
Talking of which, Is this track released on CD at all, especially the long version?
Billboard charted this for the first time:
January 11, 1975: Disco Compilation Consensus Chart
22) WAITIN' FOR THE RAIN/ DON'T DEPEND ON ME - Philly Sounds
(Phil. LA of Soul) (8/BC)
sfbeary added this:
23) WAITIN' FOR THE RAIN - Philly
Sounds (& Fantastic Johnny C)
(#22) (Phil. LA of Soul 45) (10/BC)
another great one! The Fantastic Johnny C had some soul hits of the '60s ("Boogaloo Down Broadway") and this was his proto-disco comeback of sorts. it sounds very much like an early MFSB record and probably features many of the same players. this record was issued twice - once by Johnny C, and once by Philly Sounds, which is essentially the same track with Johnny C's vocal removed. both versions appear on Philadelphia Roots, a UK compilation widely available in america at places like amoeba (and amazon). the Fantastic Johnny C b-side is also strong, "Don't Depend On Me," and i think is also the flip of the aformentioned Philly Sounds 7" in an instrumental version. i'd recommend this to you marky, but if you're not feeling Philly Devotions, you might not feel this!
im guessing but i think released mid 73 as johnny had a further release on the label later that year, the instrumentals came later as marky says, most people take 'depend' as the a side but oficially waitin for the rain is the a side.
tom moulton has remixed waitin for the rain in 2005 using the vocal and instrumental versions, a big record again here [in u.s c.d philly steps released in june, also in forthcoming u.k c.d soul togetherness 2005] maybee if we ask tom nicely he'll oblige with dont depend on me![]()
and how was it for you marky not too tinny i hopeOriginally Written by markydefad

DD,
I haven't heard "Don't Depend On Me"--but I have the "Waitin' For The Rain" on that "Philadelphia Roots" cd. Haven't listened to it recently.
So this is a case of an older cut being added as a b-side to a new cut?
no the vocals were 73 then the instrumentals came out later as the philly sound [as on your chart]...yes YOUR chart i think we'll make that official now, everybody in the industry please take noteOriginally Written by markydefad
I believe that both the vocal and instrumental were released around '73 and '74 respectively. Both were on the same label, with Johnny's single being 361 and the Philly Sound release being 369.
For the record, I'm not too crazy about the vocal versions. I think they work better as instrumentals, especially for 'Don't Depend on Me'. I find Johnny's vocals too overbearing for the tracks.
