TAKE ME HOME ??? noo waaaay !!!

    *****

OK ....let's se how this post goes over . :P

Today I went to a thrift store that I knew had 8 piles of records in a small room . I had glanced through them before --- hysterically upsetting the mentally challenged worker there who had apparently put great effort in making them into very neat piles.

I knew that these piles were of the worst crap ..... endless Christmas, religious , polka , country ...all kinds of bland music performed by bland white bread artists .........

Then I noticed a couple of other piles on a different shelf .... and hit pay dirt !! No not the TGIF 12" collection ...nothing that great ..... but some nice stuff including three Casablanca 12" sleeves. Very hopeful .

So imagine my huge disappointment when all three turned out to be CHER : "TAKE ME HOME " mint/near mint promo copies.

I absolutely hate that song !!! ( Ya I still bought them , at a buck apiece). I brought them home ( well the title is ...Take Me Home ...... :P ) and put one on the turntable .... determined to give it a fair shake .

Sorry ..........it's still the worst even after all these years ..... although I'll admit that I'm noticing some simiilarities to "LAST DANCE " .....reused the same base line from it ??? But, its like a tag along step-sister to that record.

The song just never gets any wings under it . After about two minutes it just coasts along ...never climbing anywhere higher . ... never mind climbing ... it goes nowhere period ...

    Then there's those droning, mush-mouth vocals !!!
Cher .....just ain't no Donna Summer ..... there is no excitemnet in her voice whatsoever. Does she really sound like she's even remotely sincere about wanting to be taken home ??? There's a sorry absense of titillation ....

Then never mind the lame lyrics. Take me home take me home take me home ad nauseum. I hear no romance in the concept at all ..... nothing provocative in the set up . Just an insistent , persistent , jaded request from an apparent self-professed easy lay .... After hearing this stanky suggestion over and over for about 85 times .... ( or is it 125? ) ...I'm hiding the rest of the night way on the other side of the club ...... .... ain't no way I'm taking you home !!!!

OK that's my take . If you love this record ..... defend yourself !!!! :P

Well, I must admit I'm not a fan of Cher's Elvis-eque voice, but the track itself is well written and well produced. Plus it features the tight drums of James Gadson and the bad-ass wah guitar effects of Melvin 'Wah Wah Watson' Ragin. It's my favorite Cher song, if that means anything.

I guess one could call Cher's "Take Me Home" a sister record to Donna's "Last Dance", since it was partially arranged by the same producer, Bob Esty.

The lyrics are fun and simple, and unlike the ubiquitous socially-charged "message" records from the early-mid 1970's, the scenarios described in Cher's record actually can happen in real life!

Hey remicks. I can't go there with ya bro. When it came out it was just an ordinary disco song for me. Recently, over the last several years however I've grown to really dig it especially the arrangements.

    Even I liked this record!!!!! :o :o :o

A good example of restrained UNDERSTATEMENT in both the production and vocal delivery. I don't much care for Cher's raw, nasal voice, but somehow this worked for the gal, probably because of the laid back delivery. Shame she didn't take note of it.

    I agree with Quinny!

This record was produced well musically and vocally.

Even though Cher's nasal style is well documented, this turned out to be a big, disco record for her!

no.... this is a good example of restrained understatement .......There is nothing restrained about repeating /begging "TAKE ME HOME" 125 times (yes I counted them ) . I'd call it lazy uninspired song writing myself.

Played it still again ....love the immediate wah wah ...very promising .

But either Bob Esty deserves a lot of credit for the sound of Donna Summer's "LAST DANCE " ..... or else Paul Jabara must have been pissed that Esty took so much from that tune and laid this borish , contrived "understatement " on top of it ..... What Bob didn't learn from working with Paul is how much contribution well-crafted , well-delivered, eloquent lyrics bring to a song . "TAKE ME HOME " is a good song title ...... now simply build off it ....and create the actual song. A good time to give Paul a jingle !!!

And as if Cher doesn't say "TAKE ME HOME" enough ( with a cornicopia of deliveries !) ..... just in case you're missing the line ..... the back -up ladies repeat it for you (again and again) at least as often yet some more !!! :P

    NO..... I CAN'T TAKE IT !!!!!!

Ya ..... OK, OK Cher You win : ..... I'll take you home alright, curbside ... yours..... not mine!!!
    :P :P :P

One of the first drumcomputers. The McKeithers were a very progressive group and were pioneers in Electro-Polka!

So Cher was the only person to record a Disco record with the title repeated a bunch?????
No, I ain't gonna count how many times Donna sings Love To Love You Baby in the 15+ minute version.

BTW:And if you were a McKeither, you'd all be very proud of that LP.

    remicks,

I hate to disagree since you are a "benefactor"

but I think Cher holds up quite nicely. That track was never a big fave of mine--but I think it's kinda classy and is definitive 1979 in its sound. So I like it.

Clyde Brown's 'You Call Me Back' was shorter, but probably had more instances of the title being repeated over and over again.

...... unfortunately .....way too many songs suffered from this affliction . Could name a bunch of others I also resist listening to because of that :( Sometimes it works though .... usually not .....

No, I ain't gonna count how many times Donna sings Love To Love You Baby in the 15+ minute version.
In this case what is not said is just as important to the ambience of the song as what is . The mood created by this piece was largely because of its sparseness .....instrumentally ,vocally, and lyrically . "LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY " 's intentional minimal use of lyrics was essential to that piece' s concept. .... the 15 minute love session that caused Donna to repeat the title over and over ... had her just a little too lost in the moment to express herself much beyond that 8) :P if you get what I mean ...... delirious as Prince would put it .....

Quite a different situation from that of "TAKE ME HOME " ... ..... some desperate ol' broad frantic to wind up in the sack :P ....

I can handle a song who's limited focused message is " dance dance dance dance dance " and even that can have its limits ....... I think it's the overt dodgy sentiment of "TAKE ME HOME " wryly repeated over and over and over that makes me barf ... that and the way it comes off sounding like space filler .... ...

Fortunately, I never much listen(ed) to da lyrics of anything.
    Lyrics...schmyrics!

Now I realise why I was able to play such a broad cross section of records and make 'em work for me. If I'd crossed off a record 'cos of the lyrics, I'd have ended up playing about 4 records repeatedly and nothing else. :o

Cher's Take Me Home is a brilliant piece of classic disco. Easily the best thing that the over-rated plastic goddess ever recorded IMHO. I always thought she was the opposite of Madonna i.e.her acting was better than her records! (except for 'TMH')

I'm with Sandra Dee here. I recall hearing the 7" version and thinking that it was only ok, then I got to hear the 12" version which blew my mind the first time I heard the percussion break. The 12" mix changed the song completely and made it a masterly piece of 1979 disco (IMHO)

As an aside, it was the first time I ever saw a Casblanca 12" that had a song on the other side and wasn't a Special One Sided Record

If we did a list of all the songs with really repetitive lyrics, we'd have the longest thread EVAR.

Getting back on topic though, this song has never done much for me. I can't help but to think that it would have been long forgotten had it not been sung by someone still famous.

Well , that at least helps to partially explain your lack of appreciation for Donna Summer !!

Take a new listen to songs like
"DON"T LEAVE ME THIS WAY ", " WE ARE FAMILY" , "DISCO INFERNO" , "I WILL SURVIVE" and "THE BOSS" with the lyrics in mind "

gotta throw "YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE " in here too ......

This really is a nice counterpoint to my yay or nay "Take Me Home" thread the other day....wow, tal hate-on for the song! *laughs* Meh, I still love it...despite the mounting evidence it has not won over a tonne of converts.
