Glad to know you was a nice choice for this topic.
All of you obsessive list-maker fellas, I don't know about your countries but in mine 20th July is Friends Day. I suggest to pick disco songs about friendship.
Here's one: "Glad to know you", by Chas Jankel.
BTW, I wish all you virtual friends have a good Friends Day, even if you don't happen to celebrate it.![]()
Glad to know you was a nice choice for this topic.
Keep the faith and everything will come your way as time marches on!
I pick "Weekend" by Phreeek.
GOT TO FIND A FRIEND/A FRIEND TO SPEND THE WEEKEND
(YOU KNOW I NEED SOMEBODY!)
PS: Happy Friends Day to you, too.

music plays...
everyone's dancin'...
closer and closer...
makin'friends and findin'lovers...
"Native New Yorker", by Odyssey, 1977
"Friends" and "friendship" were NOT real common themes in Disco songs, I'm coming to realize.
When I did my "toilet list", the possiblitites were limitless, but "friends" is not that easy.
What about "If My Friends Could See Me Now" by Linda Clifford--the discofied version of the showtune from "Sweet Charity"?
More of a gloating--I'd show them type of song, but, hey it mentions "friends", right?
Another song that comes to mind is "Real Good People" by Gloria Gaynor--BUT maybe that's more of an entertainer praising the audience type song, NEVER MIND!!!
Well, hush my mouth, I just thought of another one by Miss Linda Clifford, no less.
Her version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" qualifies. "If you need a friend, I'm sailing right behind".....
Did anyone ever discofy Carole King's "You've Got A Friend"?????
or "A Friend Like Me" from "Aladdin"?
or Cole Porter's "Friendship"?
"Yes", I DO have a tape with "Friends" songs on it--BUT geared for the kids, ya know.

you are forgetting a song by one of my all time favorites band, not disco but soulful funky stuff, why can't we be "Friends' by WAR
Way back from 1969: Tee Set - Ma belle amie (my pretty friend)
Gary Newman - Are friends electric ?
Jon & Vangelis - The friends of Mister Cairo
Melissa Manchester - You should hear how she talks about you
Phil Fearon& Galaxy - Everybody is laughing
If you buy this record your life, will be better.
"friendship train' GLADYS KNIGHT
"ill be your friend" ROBERT OWENS
"friends" SHALIMAR
"friend to friend" DIANA ROSS
I used to love this song by the Tee Set.On 2002-07-18 14:28, disco1999 wrote:

You've made a valid point about "friend songs". I noticed that there are dozens maybe hundreds of songs about friends that betray you. But as I was trying to come up with "friends that do right by you" type of songs it comes in very few numbers. I can only think of these:
1.You Are My Friend - Sylvester
2.Lean On Me - ? (not disco)
*DISCO DELIGHT*
How about "Meet My Friend" by Eddy Huntington?
"Meet my friend, he knows every little trick..."
Last time I heard it was in 1973, I was like 11 years old, along with the years, dad threw our scratched records in the garbage can. Recently, I did a search on audiogalaxy, now I have the 7inch record again ...on mp3 format. We've already paid for the record, so why should I need to pay again.I used to love this song by the Tee Set.

Sweet pick, DISCODISK. Gladys is so unique in style and voice. I still get chills when I hear "If I Were Your Woman".On 2002-07-18 16:02, DISCODISK wrote:

"Good Times", by Chic, 1979
Marcio - thanks for the Chic 'quote' - see... disco can be poetry!
Regarding the TeeSet - I just have to throw in the factoids here. TeeSet were a Dutch band, and released records from 1965 to the mid seventies. "Ma belle amie" is their largest international hit, and it reached #5 in the Billboard top 40. There was also a Spanish language version which was released in Spanish speaking countries.
On the back of this success, two band members opened a disco in The Hague's beach resort Scheveningen (yes, my friends, try and pronounce THAT!) called "Ma belle amie", which became one of the real early 'hot spots'.
I read that most band members now lead a derelict life as all their riches vanished...
One other interesting factoid. TeeSet's biggest hit was "She likes weeds" which everybody thought to be a drugs related song. BUT... as the songwriters explained, this is a direct quote from the movie The Ipcress Files starring Michael Caine. In it he comments to his boss that his garden is overgrown with weeds. To which the boss replies that it is because of his wife: "She liked weeds. They're easy to grow'. And that is exactly how the song goes.
By the way, apart from "Do it baby" the TeeSet songs are not even close to disco!
And now back to the 'friends' theme:
- Andrew Gold - "Thank you for being my friend" (theme song for Golden Girls, but the song existed before the TV series)
- SSSMMMOOOOCCCHHHH: Dionne Warwick & whoever-else-it-was - "That's what friends are for"
And then there is this song called "Friends, not lovers" from the early 80's that sounds a bit like Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, but it is not. I have it on a tape and it is sooo catchy, but I can't remember who it is by. Never was a hit.

I just heard another song for the list:
"Over and Over" by Sylvester.
"Can't be somebody's lover til you're somebody's friend" or something like that.
What about "Friends" by Amii Stewart???
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
I can't believe the amount of gays on this board and no mention of this gem:
(You Got To Have) Friends~Bette Midler
Didn't Elton John have a song called Friends and Lovers?
The Partridge Family did a song called "Friend And A Lover"
David Cassidy did a song called "We Could Never Be Friends (Coz We've Been Lovers So Long)"
