    Tooting their own horn ......

    *****

I'm putting together a CD of old stuff which includes Archie Bell and the Drells and Bohannon......

"LET'S GROOVE " starts out with the line
......"Hi everybody ...I'm Archie Bell and these are The Drells....."

and then of course Bohannon had no reservation mentioning himself within his work

Just wondering ....what other acts did a little self promoting within their lyrics ??

Another that jumps out right away is ...."Everybody have fun tonight ...everybody HUANG CHUNG tonight ....."

    Others? :-?

Most of my examples are funk tracks:

Yellow Sunshine by Yellow Sunshine (a Philly group)
    Mighty Ryeders by Mighty Ryeders
Feel Like Good Music (flipside to their breakbeat anthem 'Catch A Groove') by Juice (they refer to themselves)
Let Us Entertain You by First Choice
We Are Family by Sister Sledge
Doesn't Teddy Pendergrass refer to himself in HM & Bluenotes' 'Satisfaction Guaranteed'? He says something like 'let Teddy....'
I don't know if this counts, but in 'Boogie Oogie Oogie', Janice Johnson refers to her bass playing 'listen to my bass, yeah'.

This is becoming common is soul/urban/whatever they call it today. R. Kelly, the pied piper, is always bragging and talking about himself. Kirk Franklin is almost as bad.
But the one that totally knocked me out so bad it took a month for me to actually buy his album was "The name is Charlie, last name Wilson." I have most of the Gap Band's work and all of Charlie's solo albums and this R. Kelly/Charlie Wilson creation has to be the most self-promoting track ever produced. There are a few real solid ballads in the vein of "Without you" but the previously mentioned track is ridiculous.

I was just listening to Margie Joseph's 'I Wants Mo'Stuff' from '84 & mid-way she says 'nobodys gonna get a piece of Ms.J's stuff' referring to how she ain't gonna share her man with nobody! (I love sassy divas :P )
