Buckaroo, don't know if this is true but apparently it went out of stock that week so rod stewart held on to the no.1 spot.
All hearsay of course! I think it made no.1 in the Melody Maker charts as well!

    These are the official no.1's for the UK in 1977;
15/1 David Soul - Don't give up on us (4 weeks)
12/1 Julie Covington - Don't cry for me Argentina (1 week)
19/2 Leo Sayer - When i need you (3 weeks)
    12/3 Manhattan Transter - Chanson d'mour (3 weeks)
2/4 Abba - knowing me knowing you (5 weeks)
    7/5 Deneice williams - Free (2 weeks)
    21/5 Rod Stewart - I don't want to talk......(4 weeks)
    18/6 Kenny Rogers - Lucille (1 week)
25/6 Jacksons - Show you the way to go (1 week)
2/7 Hot Chocolate - So you win again (3 weeks)
    23/7 Donna Summer - I feel love (4 weeks)
20/8 Brotherhood of Man - Angelo (1 Week)
    27/8 Floaters - Float on (1 week)
    3/9 Elvis - Way down (5 weeks)
8/10 David Soul - Silver Lady (3 weeks)
29/10 Baccara - Yes sir I can boogie (1 week)
5/11 Abba - Name of the game (4 weeks)
    3/12 Wings - Mull of Kintyre/Girls School (9 weeks)

The only 1 i'm not sure about in the US lot is Alan O'Day.

I saw John Lydon in a documentary, saying that it was "...kept off..." the #1 spot by the powers that be. You had a situation where, you would walk into a record shop which listed the charts, and there would be a blank space at #1  Also, stations refused to play it. Also, because of the way charts were compiled back then, a bit of dodgy business went on.

The lack of stock, would've been down to people in the pressing plants at the time, refusing to manufacture "God Save The Queen"
