    HEATWAVE or AVERAGE WHITE BAND

These two heavy hitters from Britain had many great songs. Some more popular than others. While Heatwave to my ears had a more mainstream pop sound, it almost seemed at times they created the genre with their style. AWB on the other hand definitely knew how to get funky.
My choice with Jennifer Lee tonight is AWB :)

AWB is definitely the group to beat. They were around longer than Heatwave (at least on the charts) and had that cut Pick Up The Pieces that hit number one. And their LPs are awesome mixtures of funk, jazz, and soul. I like them all except for that one they did in 1980 or so. Everything from their first LP (the one that was retitled Put It Where You Want It) to Warmer Communications is worth getting, including that LP they did with Ben E King.

Heatwave hasn't really appealed to me in the same way. They've got some great songs like Boogie Nights, Groove Line, Ain't No Half Steppin, and the ballad Always & Forever, but their appeal for me is just in those hit singles. The occasional album track, like Super Soul Sister, is good, but they're mostly a singles group, at least for me.

Average White Band wins hands down.

Average White Band is the stronger of the 2 IMO. They didn't hit high on the charts as did Heatwave... but their LP's had more to offer. Check out the SOUL SEARCHING LP to see what i'm talking about.... you shouldn't be disappointed.

OK ......I'll go the other way ....preferring the more polished sound of Heatwave which I always ( and forever) felt gave them a more EW & F feel.
I thought AWB was a bit too brash for my own taste ... reminding me of the those times I didn't care for Tower Of Power (i.e. "WHAT IS HIP" ) . Besides can someone please explain to me the purpose of repeating a flimsy line like "CUT THE CAKE " ? .... I must be missing something ...

I also have some good memories while DJing of sliding back and forth between the O Jays' "USED TO BE MY GIRL " and Heatwave's "GROOVE LINE " :)

Ouch Remicks. I love Tower Of Power's What is Hip.
As for Cut The Cake, I always thought it referenced female genetalia. Coming from me, I guess you're not surprised to see I would think so
Anyway I'm glad you broke up what looked to be a runaway choice for AWB.
By the way, efunk is right. AWB's Soul Searching is excellent. I had the original vinyl from BITD and recently bought the cd due to nearly 30 years of playing the vinyl to death. :D

Yeah, I always thought Cut The Cake's lyrics were meant to be naughty. I think it's probably just a euphemism for sex.

Here they are from some online source:

    CUT THE CAKE-
    give me a little piece
let me lick up the cream
    CUT THE CAKE-
    well, just a little piece
baby you know what I mean
    CUT THE CAKE-
    give me a little piece
a little lovin' on the side
    CUT THE CAKE-
    I need a little piece
    just to keep me satisfied
    Chorus
    gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme,
gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme that cake
Well it tastes so good don't pass it all around
    gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme,
gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme that cake
    You got to cut it-down!
    CUT THE CAKE-
    just a little piece
    of your sweet love
    CUT THE CAKE-
    don't you know that I
    can't get enough
    CUT THE CAKE-
want you to know that I
    ain't a greedy man
    CUT THE CAKE-
    don't you know that I'll
    do the best I can
    Chorus
    CUT THE CAKE-
    give me a little piece
let me lick up the cream
    CUT THE CAKE-
    well, just a little piece
baby you know what I mean
    CUT THE CAKE-
    give me a little piece
a little lovin' on the side
    CUT THE CAKE-
    I need a little piece
    just to keep me satisfied
    Chorus
    gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme,
gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme that cake
Well it tastes so good don't pass it all around
    gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme,
gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme that cake
Never knew you cooked the way you do
    gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme,
gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme that cake
Tastes so good don't pass the recipe around
    gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme,
gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme that cake
    You got to
    cut it-DOWN
    cut it-DOWN
    cut it-DOWN-cut the cake-please

    Very explicit lyrics, huh? lol

If you want a detailed history of AWB, then their "Best of..." from Rhino (1992) has exhaustive liner notes with discography including chart positions in both pop and R & B.

Cake aside, I will have to vote for Heatwave because of Rod Temperton and his ballads like "Mind blowin' Decisions".

    Heatwave/AWB

AWB - Pick Up The Pieces was a hit!

Heatwave - Boogie Nights, The Groove Line, Ain't No Half Steppin' and Always and Forever touched all of us!

    Heatwave wins this one.....

I liked the 45 RPM - 7" version of The Groove Line better than the 12" version.

    Honorable Mention - BRICK

    That's for another topic!
