Watching many 1970's Top Of The Pops episodes, I've noticed that the British had made a huge contribution to disco/funk music, there are a lot of home grown disco/funk groups appearing on Top Of The Pops and also rock/glamrock artists making their contribution to disco music as well. Anyhow here's the British disco playlist:

1 - Olympic Runners - Put Your Music Where Your Mouth Is 1974/Get It While You Can 1978/Solar Heat 1978/Keep It Up 1978/Do Whatever It Takes 1979 etc...
2 - Osibisa - Music For Gong Gong 1971/Fire 1973/Dance The Body Music 1976 etc...
    3 - JALN Band - Get Up 1978
4 - Jimmy James & The Vagabonds - I'll Go Where Your Music Takes Me/Now Is The Time 1976
    5 - Mud - Shake It Down 1976
    6 - Glitter Band - Makes You Blind 1975
7 - Jonathon King - One For You, One For Me 1978 (love the clown afro wigs)
    8 - Ultrafunk - Kung Fu Man 1974
9 - Hot Chocolate - You Sexy Thing 1975/Heaven's In The Backseat Of My Cadillac 1976/Disco Queen 1974 etc...
    10 - Rolling Stones - Hot Stuff 1976/Miss You 1978

Well, if I were ever to compile my own "Hell's Playlist," Hot Chocolate's "You Sexy Thing" would certainly be near the top of the list!

Do we have a smiley emoticon for "barfing"?

Being totally unbiased, I reckon we Brits have made some FANTASTIC records during the Disco era!!

I think the best time was when the British jazz-funk thing took off in the summer of 1980. We all will always remember Robbie Vincent played a demo tape from an unknown band on his legendary Saturday lunchtime show on Radio London. It was a track from an unknown band without a record contract - it was "You're Lyin'" by LYNX. The rest, as they say, is history ... along came Second Image, Level 42, Incognito, LOTW with their excellent LP etc - and British jazz-funk was born!!

Here is my personal list of the BEST OF BRITISH!!!!!

It is in no particular order ...

MORRISSEY-MULLEN - Badness (My fave tune from this fantastic LP was "Slipstream" - probably my fave British jazz-funk tune of all time - I saw them play many many times!!)
JUNIOR - Mama Used To Say
    INCOGNITO - Parisienne Girl
LIGHT OF THE WORLD - Dancin' And Swingin'
LIGHT OF THE WORLD - Time (incl the remix) / I Shot The Sheriff / London Town
LIGHT OF THE WORLD - Always There (live at The Best Disco In Town)
OLYMPIC RUNNERS - Keep It Up
    TOUCH - Keep On
    HI TENSION - Hi Tension
REAL THING - You To Me Are Everything
REAL THING - Can You Feel The Force (incl remix)
COOL NOTES - Never Too Young
LOOSE ENDS - Hangin' On A String (incl remix)
LYNX - You're Lyin' (incl the remix)
DAVID JOSEPH - You Can't Hide Your Love (remix)
    EVASIONS - Wikka Rap
PAZ - Look Inside (entire LP - jazz fusion LP with latin influence)
BEGGAR AND CO - Somebody Help Me Out
ATMOSFEAR - Dancing In Outer Space
    ATMOSFEAR - Motivation/Extract/Return Of LB
CENTRAL LINE - Walking Into Sunshine/Breaking Point
STYLE COUNCIL / PAUL WELLER - The Lodgers (remix)
LEVEL 42 - Love Meeting Love (my fave from that wonderful summer of 1980 along with Rick James' Big Time)
BIDDHU - Journey To The Moon

    Honourable mentions:

First goes to DUSTY SPRINGFIELD for some of her excellent 1960's RnB sides. I am not an expert on her music, but her music was fantastic. Definitely the best Brit female RnB singer there ever was!!

Second mention has to go to Lover's Rock - a British branch of reggae music. There were many excellent Lover's Rock versions of the popular disco/funk tunes of the day!!! The name Carol Johnson springs to mind as a good example ...

Jazz Pilgrim - I love your list. I think Light Of The World, Lynx, Heatwave, and Olympic Runners are still underrated. My Olympic Runners fav is "So you think it's..." (aaaghhhh, my memory fails me: "over"? "funny"? HELP!). I am especially grateful for the Morrisey Mullen mention.

And then there is of course UK 80's dance fodder such as Shakatak, Paul Hardcastle, ABC, 52nd Street (I just bought the 12" "You're my last chance b/w I'm available" - magical!), Chaz jankel, Matt Bianco (pioneers!), Delegation, Total Contrast, Soul II Soul (one of my alltime fav bands), etc. etc. etc. All excellent.

And then, into the 90's: Drizabone, Brand New Heavies, D'Influence, Incognito (seen them live a few times here in Tokyo - excellent), Lisa Stansfield, Shola Ama and Michelle Gayle, all keeping the disco flame alive.

So let's hear it for the UK disco/dance scene!

PS: Yes, I am biased, I lived in London for a long time and my wife is English...

Yes, agree with everyone here. The stuff Jazz & Maarten mentioned is marvellous- who could forget the Olympic Runners theme to 'The Bitch' movie! I agree with Jeff- Hot Chocolate are one of my pet hates too.
Trivia- did u know that Loose Ends were originally called Loose End & were produced by Chris & Eddy from The Real Thing?

I should have included Paul Hardcastle in my list with his excellent "Rain Forest" - sorry about that.

I am very pleased that somebody else likes Morrissey-Mullen - aka Dick Morrissey on sax and Jim Mullen (my fave ..) on guitar.
I went to see them countless times at the Half Moon in Putney(London) on their regular Tuesday night slot and they were always a joy to watch. They always got the crowd involved, and a good time was had by all.

They had a soul singer guesting with them called Noel McCalla, who shoulda been a superstar in my opinion - a British Al Jarreau!!! He was that good!!!

And as for the track Slipstream - a nice jazz samba dancer in typical MM style - it was ENORMOUSLY popular with the Jazz Pilgrims back in the day .... The whole LP is worth checkin' out.

OK guys. I gotta be the one the one here to support "You Sexy Thing." I love that song. I think I still have the '45 here.
I didn't know Lynx and Hi-Tension were British. They were very popular songs in Boston at the clubs.
    Find them and destroy them!

I'm with ya Paul.I LOVE "YOU SEXY THING"!!!!

I like a lot of the Hot Chocolate stuff.

When Jack-in the Box used "You Sexy Thing" in an ad campaign a few years ago, I always did a little dance every time I heard it (even at the office).

In fact, I have that song on a tape I'm listening to in the car right now.

With "Hang On In There Baby" (Johnny Bristol)
"I Wanna Do Something Freaky To You" (Leon Haywood)
""Let The Music Play"- (Barry White)
"Georgy Porgy" (Toto & Cheryl Lynn)
    "Disco Lady" (Johnnie Taylor)
"Ladies Night" (Kool & The Gang)
    "Native New Yorker" (Odyssey)
"Stoned Out Of My Mind" (Maryann Farra & Satin Soul) and some other sexy morning grooves.

    "Lost inside adorable illusion...."

My favourite Hot Chocolate songs are:

    You Sexy Thing 1975
    Disco Queen 1974
Heaven's In The Backseat Of My Cadillac 1976
    Brother Louie 1973
Put Your Love In Me 1977 (I love the special effect used in their Top Of The Pops performance of this song)

Disco Queen and Heaven's In The Backseat are my top 2 favourites because they have a super funky drum beat, I just love that funky drum beat.

And speaking of Real Thing three of my top favourites are:
Can You Feel The Force 1978
    Let's Go Disco 1977
    Flash 1976

Australia mate! The land of many great funkateers!
