No wonder he left Bohannon after that first album! :)

Thanks for sharing the info . I love connecting the dots ..... trying to figure out why certain songs work better than others ... why certain ones shine .... and usually it's because of who produced , mixed, wrote, or played on certain cuts.
That's how I base my buying criteria on, if I'm not familiar with a record or the artist. I don't mind taking a chance on it if it has Ragin, or any of the Philly cats on it.

If I see The Harris Machine's involvement my odds of something good increase ten fold .
When people talk about Philly disco, Gamble & Huff and Thom Bell always come to mind. But Norman was on par with those guys, and in fact exceeded them during the late 70's. Not only did he produce some great LPs for Eddie Kendricks, he also resurrected the careers of some other artists who were written off, like The Dells and The Four Tops. RIP Norman.

I'm a long ways off from knowing right off what musicians to look for .. .... but I'm working on it ...
That's cool. If you want to hear good examples of Melvin's work, you should check out the Pointer Sisters cuts 'How Long' and 'Don't It Drive You Crazy'. Melvin is on fire on those cuts.

QUINNY: Thanks for the link to Melvin's discography. He was all over the West Coast productions back in the day.

When it came out in '72, Stop & Go was an absolute monster of a record. One of the absolute backbones onto which Disco was later attached.

Just to be clear my sardonic comment of ---
no amount of wah wah can validate that song :D :P
was aimed at Cher's lovely tune ..... not THE STOP AND GO .....

which I enjoy more and more ..... yep.... definately some "PAPA WAS A ROLLING STONE " going on in there . And one more song to point to when searching for the first songs of disco .....

Another biggie for Wah-Wah ...."I WILL SURVIVE " : Gloria Gaynor

I wouldn't be surprised, since most of his songs by the early 70's had been remakes or reworkings of his earlier hits, or of other people's hits. His albums are actually not that great. There are the occasional great ones like The Payback or some of his JBs LPs like Breakin Bread, but other than that, they were pretty weak.

lol.. actually that quote was attributed to Bohannon, but I suppose it could apply to both really.. I'm not too familiar with JB's 70s stuff. I know he wasn't crazy about cashing in on disco and I guess it was bound to show at times.. Although I admit to enjoying his "Original Disco Man" album from time to time. Then again, by that time he'd recruited Millie Jackson's producer Brad Shapiro to take over production duty..

Bohannon cranking out an album a week. Well, talk about a waste of vinyl. :)

I haven't been able to get into any of his stuff post-Body Heat. Even though he kind of did help invent disco, he didn't do a good job making 'real disco'.
