Now that it's been discussed for a few days, my favorite for Phyllis Hyman is "You Know How To Love Me." By the way, any suggestions where to get the best extended cd version of this song.

    Paul,

My recommendation for the best Phyllis compilation is the 2 CD "The Legacy Of Phyllis Hyman" on Arista. This has almost all of her classic tunes in their full-length versions, but most of her single "Hits" CD's have the extended version of "You Know How To Love Me", also.

Now how to choose? I agree totally with Keefe's choices: "Loving You, Losing You", "Tonight-You And Me", and "You Know How To Love Me" for dance cuts.

Ballads: "Just 25 Miles To Anywhere" is a gem; Also, the collaboration with McCoy Tyner "In Search Of My Heart" is gorgeous.
    But I could easily name 15 more. I won't.

    A great artiste.

My fave is "Under My Spell" followed by "You Know How To Love Me"

Not very original, I'm afraid ...

True title is "Under your spell"

Not to spoil the fun, but just to let you know that she did commit suicide in '95 in her appartment at age 54 few hours prior to scheduled performance at Apollo Theatre in New York. Fans were shocked while her close friends were not surprised.
If you buy this record your life, will be better.

Thankx Marky. I'll check out both cds.

This is just about impossible. I can't just name one and, like Mark, if I try to choose a ballad --- forget it.

    So, dance cuts:

LOVING YOU, LOSING YOU (People would just be screeeeaming as this intro played.)

KISS YOU ALL OVER (I might have told this before. This was the ONLY song I've ever put on the turntable where the crowd asked me to PLAY IT AGAIN and NOT MIX OUT when they heard it the first time. I was floored --- I just picked up the tone arm and put it back on --- to much applause.)

YOU KNOW HOW TO LOVE ME (Memories of Howard Merrit and 'tea' at the "Ring".)

TONIGHT YOU AND ME (She is so powerful here, I can forget about the 'sounds-like-The Jacksons' rhythm and just enjoy.)

    Nicky,

That LONG, LONG intro is soooo wonderful. It just repeats this vamp (stirring strings and dramatic timpani--Harvey Mason of Fourplay, BTW) over and over building in intensity until after 2&1/2 minutes or so, the background vocalists do their heralding "DA-DAHHHHH" and it's as though a pinspot hits Phyllis and she begins "In the middle of my ...." whatever it is.

This arrangement so screams Thom Bell that I was positive he had written and produced--BUT was shocked NOT to see his name on the credits. I don't have the CD in front of me, so I can't recall who was responsible. BUT it's a real beauty.

Correction: After I typed that last part, I went in search of the CD and I see that Thom Bell did indeed write that tune with his nephew Leroy Bell (!) but it was produced by Jerry Peters who "found" the song according to the liner notes of "The Classic Balladry of ...".

I started to doubt what I had written.

"Oh the tricks a mind can play"!!!!!!
    Name that tune!!!!!!

P.S. I kept fucking this post up cause I was trying to watch and listen to my fave Sarah Jessica Parker on Letterman and type this damn thing at the same time. I am not a very successful multi-tasker, I guess.
