I'm certain it's by a British group called I-level. The track is called "Give me". It's rather obscure on CD but big in NYC around 1985.
When you were in school
You had to give it up for me
I just had to keep my cool
I just had to let it be
But now that you've grown
Sure you must have known
That the birds and the bees
Do the wrong thing in the trees
REFRAIN:
So Gimme
Yeah gimme
Give me what you can't get back...
So Gimme
Come on and give me girl
Give me what you can't get back...
If anyone can help me track this down I'll be in heaven. I've been goooooogling these forever to the point where it drives me nuts.
Thanks, Pluche

And a big round of applause goes to Eddie. Well that's a healthy start. At least I can now start goooogling something other than the eternal "Gimme (or Give me) what you can't get back" which always drums down to a new-wavish baseball anthem !!!.
I couldn't help but to check in here before going to bed. So Keep it up guys and gals this is a very very nice place to visit indeed!
Denis (Pluche), Montreal.
Those are definitely the lyrics to "Give Me" by I Level.
They also had another hit which was "MineField" - which has proven to be harder to find than "Give Me" was.... :D

Thanks guys. I'm extremely greateful. As most of you probably know, Montreal (my hometown) used to be (and still is to some extent) a rallypoint for everything dance music and a lot could be heard, at least once. And that one certainly made its mark... back in the days.
Now at 43, I cherrish the mid-80s, let's say from 83 to 86. I find this period particularly prolific (Q.T. Hush, I Level, Loose Ends, Aurra, etc.). I like this period because it delivered strong heavy beats while keeping sampling to a tolerable level.
Did I mention Q.T. Hush???
I can't say I'm a big fan of, any of Q.T.'s uptempo stuff, but that duet they did with Teena Marie was on par with any she belted out w/Rick James. :DOriginally Written by pluche

I never cease to be amazed by the popularity of British Soul from the '80s. At the time a lot of record labels saw it as a flash in the pan, which wouldn't reach further than the UK. It's good to hear from someone like me who still likes that stuff.
'Minefield' indeed came out on Uk Virgin 12" first. There was a US remix issued in the States on Epic. It was mixed by John Luongo. Cat no; 49-03415.
Uk cat nos; Give me VS523-12
Minefield VS563-12
Happy hunting!
