The list-making has really gotten out of control here ("Songs I Like to Play Backward While Picking My Nose," "Cerrone Hits I Most Want to Hear Covered by Celine Dion and Produced by P. Diddy")...

Why not put our knowledge and opinions to more constructive use and compile a new Top Disco Hits playlist?

I wasn't a member yet back when the list that's currently posted at the site was created, but I seem to recall reading or hearing (probably from Marky!) that the poll included selections from unregistered visitors to the site, which might have skewed the results.

Yes, I realize that this would require an effort by somebody, but some of our members seem to have plenty of free time. And the list needn't include 500 songs, for gawd's sake; that's just a little obsessive, don't you think?

    Well, I await your comments...

    Wow and duh!

I just scolled down the forum main menu to the suggestions section and saw that California Mike and Marky were discussing this very topic just the other day!!!

And Marky even addressed a lot of the specifics about conducting such a poll.

Great minds think alike, I guess.

have i started something by wondering if there will be an updated top 500?
would like to see it stay 500, as the most interesting and rare songs are always further down the charts.
    would this be:
    1.the most influental or groundbreaking
2.the hits or essentials for creating a collection
3.or our personal favorites, regardless if it was a hit or not.

I fully expected that question, Paul!

Unfortunately, I am definitely not one of our members with a lot of free time. I think Marky can vouch for the fact that if you want any poll compiled this year, I am NOT your man!

As the original pollster way back when (grandpa gets on his chair, pulls out pipe and starts to reminisce) I can vouch it is a LOT of work.

For the newbies: the reason that, in the end, we had a '500' was that Bernie and I decided there were too many songs that scored an equal amount of points to leave them out.

As far as time is concerned, I think I might be able to volunteer some time later this year, probably after August, when my current assignment will wind down and my new one (hopefully) won't have kicked in.

So... unless my future evolves differently from what I now think it will be, why don't we re-visit this topic in early fall? And... we also need to know what the grandmaster of this place (i.e. Bernie) thinks of this!

Well are you guys happy now or what???!!!!!

Maarten is receptive to the idea of a new poll!!!!! Having the existing Top 500 as a guideline should help the voters with their accuracy this time, I would think.

    Et tu, Bernie????

Well I guess that will work. I was about to suggest several of us divide this task by for example, having each of us compile 2 weeks of voting. Next volunteer someone (Bernie, hehehe ) to take each of our vote tallies and put them all together. Since Maarten has graciously accepted to do a repeat, I'm more than down for that.
As a side note. I see Delight and Funky aren't too happy with the hate goin' on roun' here! This might vote might serve as a distraction.

My question would be what type of survey.

Would it be just the Top songs or Top albums (like the way the charts were in the 70s which had 12" singles LPs or even the rare 7")

it seems the updated top 500 will happen!
are we voting for disco/dance songs or 12 inchers?
how many songs can we vote for? 25-50 would seem to be good. would like to see each song get one vote, seems it would almost be impossible to have everyone list their songs in a favorite order, and would also be easier to count the votes.
    i'm starting my list.

    California Mike,

Bernie has a plan, but it's a "secret" at this point. See the Site Announcements section.

I am happy to learn that I may be 'releaved' from my Top 500 compilation duties. But... how will I succeed in cooking the books Enron/Worldcom style to ensure Jacques Fred Petrus is represented in a significant manner???
