Good try Dear Lord , but this is a question specifically about the recording itself of : "THERE GOES MY BABY " as released by The Drifters .
This song is often cited as purportedly the first R&B song to ( thankfully ) do something very particular ......
???? :-?

I pulled it out to play it and by the sound I'm guessing you're talking about the use of 'strings'. Drifters' later songs were known for orchestration so maybe this was a first.
******
Yep !! :D That's it exactly .....
The Drifters "THERE GOES MY BABY "
is considered the first R&B song to incorporate the use of lush classical strings into its sound . 8)
And of course
the rest is history.
What would soul music be like without strings? And then disco ....
I've often wondered why this particular sound became so highly prevalent in soul music . I guess its because strings have that extra ability to touch the heart ... and soul ...
Good work NICKNACK :D ..... and by listening to the music too 8) .....

FOLLOW UP :
By the way :
The beautiful lead voice on The Drifters "THERE GOES MY BABY " in 1959 , is the same wonderful voice featured on a 1975 disco hit found on Marky's TOP 200 for that year .....

Could it be...
Ben E. King-"Supernatural Thing"..?
*****
:D :D
At number 156 for the year 1975 and a Top 10 disco hit :
156) SUPERNATURAL THING - Ben E. King
(Atlantic) B= 19; C= 9; D= 29; Total points = 57
6 weeks on the chart (1/11 - 2/15/75);1 week in the Top 10; Peak: #9
and then ..........
.......BEN E. KING disapppears from the land of disco forever ...... :( ..............where goes my baby ........
******
Actually, he did a great album with the Average White Band in '77 called Benny & Us, which included the hit 'Get It Up For Love'. The whole LP is full of great tunes. I'd say it's also the last great AWB album. Warmer Communications which was released by them the next year was only so so.
Disco Funk
Ben E. King charts another dance record called MUSIC TRANCE in the 1979-1980 era,

  OK OK .....change my above comment to "But Ben E. King never gained any real prominence during the rest of the disco era "

Sheeeesh !!!
Wish people would spend as much time answering the dang questions as they do correcting me !!!! :P :P :P![]()
