    80`s British soul

Who were your favourite British Soul Artists of the 80`s... ?
My absolute faves would have to be RUBY TURNER & JAKI GRAHAM. They both released top notch material and quality albums... Jaki`s music tended to be more "dance" orientated.
    I also loved PRINCESS.

I quite liked Haywoode, but loved Sade. Although she was dismissed as "coffee table fodder", you can't deny her voice.

    Smooth Operator? Indeed she was.

    Loose Ends
In the quizes and trivia forum, a posed the question of who was the first all British born group to hit number 1 in the U.S. R&B charts. I know they hit #1 in 1983 with "Hangin' on a string" but I'm not sure if they were the first or were all British born.

Sade, as good as she is, is not British. She was born in Nigeria, Africa.

I know that Junior Giscombe was the first British born artist to win a Soul Train award back in '83 for "Mama Used to say" and was very successful. Loose Ends may well have been the first group to get an R&B #1 in the U.S. About 5 years afterward, Soul II Soul got to #1 in the soul charts with "Keep on Moving" (1989)

As far as I was concerned, 20 years back :-? Loose Ends were doing the biz big time. It was a great year 1985, because so many good british groups were in the UK national charts: Animal Nightlife, Hindsight, Hi Tension, Princess, Syd Haywoode, Phil Fearon & Galaxy, etc.

Jaki Graham did some euro dance/house/pop stuff in the mid 90s, including (I think) 2 full albums. Both were terrible.

Junior is currently a DJ at solar radio with a weekly show.

But what about David Grant, Total Contrast and Steven Dante?

I do recall Jaki recording a cover version of AIN`T NOBODY which was pretty dire... I believe her 90`s work was very successful in Japan.
David Grant did some duets with Jaki in the mid 80s.. COULD IT BE IM FALLING IN LOVE and MATED

David Grant can often be seen on UK TV as one of the Fame Academy coaches along with his missus, Carrie.

Delroy Murray, from Total Contrast was musical director of the 291 Club at The Hackney Empire during the '90s. Last I heard, he was producing a lot of UK Garage singles. Dunno about his partner Achampong.

I think Steven Dante is producing/ writing these days.

From the few SOUL artists I know from the 80's decade, the one I know well and love is SADE. Her 1993 set LOVE DELUXE is the best in her discography, for me.

Very recently I discovered HIGH FASHION and bought their 2 CDs (the 2nd being a japanese only release). I liked both albums, specially the first (FEELING LUCKLY LATELY).

Yes that's the same guy. He also did a Steve Harvey produced single "Give It Up For Love" in 1986 and a pretty good LP "Find Out" in 1988 (the infamous Jellybean cut was included on that one as well)
