    Gwen Guthrie track

A friend of mine has given me a 12" single by Gwen Guthrie called 7th heaven.. WOW ! What a superb track - I can`t stop playing it. I am not very familiar with this artist except for the obvious hits she had in the mid 80`s like "nothin goin on but the rent" & "they long to be (close to you"... I will definitely be searching out some more of her recordings... can anyone recommend some of her albums/singles ?

The 'Padlock' EP on Island. Larry Levan remixed. Hammered at the Paradise Garage, especially 'Should've been you' and 'Seventh heaven'.

Don't forget her Ultimate collection on cd by Hipo/Universal.
I also enjoyed her 1990 release with a slowed down version of Stephanie Mills' "Never knew love like this before."

Oh boy, have you missed out. I would suggest, that you try and get as many of her albums as you can. Because there are truly superb LP tracks, like "Joyriders", "Thrill Me", etc, which don't appear on the ultimate collection.

Her version of "Closer to you" was massive on the soul scene over here, about 19 years back...
Was it really that long ago? :-? Oh yes.

"Love In Moderation" and "Just For You", both from her 1984 LP should get a mention too.

Also, "Bye Bye Lover" from 1988 - sounds a bit like her take on the Bacherach song Buckaroo mentioned.

my fave ballad by Miss Guthrie is....

FOR YOU (WITH A MELODY TOO)

Be sure to check that one out. Highly recommended. :D :D

Also, don't forget she was a prolific songwriter for other performers; among her compositions were LOVE DON'T YOU GO THROUGH NO CHANGES ON ME (for Sister Sledge), THIS TIME I'LL BE SWEETER (recorded by both Roberta Flack & Angela Bofill) & SUPERNATURAL THING (for Ben E. King). All great records!!!!!

And Gwen sang background vocals on a whole lotta great records!!! She was extremely talented and underrated.

Neil, I'll check my trade 12"s, as I'm sure there's a coupla Gwen's tunes hidden away.

Hopskotch is a great tune, as is the Boiler House (if my memory serves me right) remix of nothing going on....

Sublime re-mix of For you (with a melody too) 5mins 12 on b side of UK Peek-a-boo.

Didn't know know Hopscotch went for that much, I wonder how much the Larry Levan mix with the dub goes for? (Mind you I wouldn't part with any of my Guthrie's)

She was indeed a much underated singer/song writer, and even had to put up with backing Madonna when she was still a nobody. Gwens vocals can be heard very clearly in the background of Madges Lucky star.

Would have loved to have been at the closing night of the Garage when she performed. I'm still sad that she is no longer with us, maybe one day she will get the full recognition she deserved outside of 'Rent' & 'Close'

    Excellent indeed!

The Padlock EP was hot! The Seventh Heaven mix was second best to the Peech Boys - Don't Make Me Wait.

It should've been you - 12" Promo w/Instrumental is the one to find....

Larry Levan signed my copy of Padlock EP in Vinyl Mania Records on 4/19/85.

I've cherished that signature as a prize from my collection.

I love the -82 album Gwen Guthrie. And Hopscotch. And Peanut butter.

I have an -85 album (don't remember the name) that I don't think is worth the time listening to.

-82 album was also Sly Dunbar. Recorded in Jamaica. Even a nice version of Marley's "Is this Love" on it

    Gwen Guthrie/"Lifeline" (1988)

Here's what I wrote about Gwen's "Lifeline" album & my fave G.G. song "What Would I Do Without You?" at rateyour music.com... This album by Gwen Guthrie is worth having just for the song "What Would I Do Without You?". This song (written by her) could melt the hardest heart with one listen. It appeals to the romantic in all of us, even if those romantic notions have been buried or forgotten with a jaded heart. None of the uptempo tunes are as good as her biggest hit "Ain't Nothing Goin' On But The Rent" (even though she tries with "Rockin' Chair"), but the album maintains a pretty decent groove. One interesting song on the album is "Can't Love You Tonight" (also written by Gwen) where she proclaims, "...Can't Love you tonight. Love Is No Longer Free. I'm Too Young To Die. I don't want no AIDS or Herpes..." (Sadly, Gwen Guthrie did die of uterine cancer on February 4, 1999).

    Interesting review!

Gwen Guthrie was one of my favorite singers from the Paradise Garage era!

    Deeply missed!
