I would have to say 1973 and 1974. Blue magic released "Welcome to the club", Ohio Players and Barry White were in full force.
The 3rd most influential year I would say was 1982. It may be a shock to some, but 1982 proved that proto funk and proto disco could still sell in Black/soul markets. Despite a decline in dance music on the Top 40 charts, groups like Maze, T-Connection, Unlimited Touch, and Rene and Angela had a core group of fans that hadn't jumped ship.
