The second one is "LOVE ME TONIGHT" by Fern Kinney.

The first one is from a group called Kleeer (yes, three E). Probably called "We want you", I would have to check out at home.

OK, I checked and the Kleeer song is called "De Kleeer ting" (sic). It's NOT in the Kleeer compilation issued by Rhino on CD. I had it in an Unidisc CD compilation called "Discoteque". Apparently the original was released on Atlantic.

"LOVE ME TONIGHT" was also released as the b-side on Malaco 12" MAL 1202. (A side was "Let The Good Times Roll.") Now, don't make me crazy, Giovanni. I'm playing it right now and the lyrics are EXACT, with a BPM of 118.

Interesting side note, Giovanni. "Love Me Tonight" is the only song on the album that lists the rights belonging to Malaco Music/Sho-Nuff Music, BMI.

"Tonite" is for sure by SHO-NUFF and it's the original, but you are right another version exists by Fern Kinney!! I checked and I have that 12" (MAL 1202) with "Love me tonight" on the flip.
Malaco was a small indie and probably they had a lot of osmosis among productions!!

Thanks --- I never heard of Sho-Nuff and have nothing by them. Strange since Malaco was promoted heavily in 'the record pools' at the time. Fern's version was very popular in NYC during those 'laid-back' BPM sets. How does hers compare with the original?

I know 2 albums by SHONUFF (both on Malaco) titled "From the gut to the butt" from 1978 and "Tonite" from 1980. I suppose there are some more.
"Tonite" was one of my favorite around that time and I played it heavily. I prefer ShoNuff's than Fern Kinney's version.
I remember such a curious thing of that time: I recorded that song in a cassette we used to sell at the disco (yes, I did it, everybody did it, in spite of all copyrights...........), and the clerk of the record shop I used to buy records at told me that many people were asking for that quite obscure track that they "have heard in a cassette", and they were coming to the shop with the cassette to make him listen to it..... I don't think that album sold so much but I gave my contribution!!!!

I've seen the "From the gut..." on some websites but not "Tonight". I'll probably pick it up just to hear their sound.

Yes, we did! And 'they' knew it, AND they appriecated it. Why, because like you said, people in droves were leaving the clubs and the bars going to the record shops looking for the songs we had "stolen" and put on cassette. I don't remember getting any kickbacks (or complaints) --- do you?
