    Barbara Pennington

This lady does not get mentioned on here very often... I was listening to two of her albums last night - MIDNIGHT RIDE & OUT OF THE DARKEST NIGHT (Won both on CD last year -god bless e-bay). This lady made a big contribution to both the soul & dance scenes during the 70s & 80s - Who can ever forget her hugely successful 24hrs a day (still sounds wonderful today) and is one of Ian Levine`s crowning moments.
Her voice has often been compared to Chaka Khan and I can see the similarities. I particularly love her 80s recordings on Record Shack - especially FAN THE FLAME, ON A CROWDED STREET (pure class) and RAISE THE CURTAIN. Her version of VANITY (in my opinion) is far better than Carol Jiani`s. unfortunately the material she was given on Nightmare records was below par and she seemed to disappear. I was looking through some of the old record mirror HI-NRG charts and came across a track she recorded on her album called VERTIGO. It was never released as a 12" single but was popular on the HI-NRG scene.

It was Earlene Bentley that recorded 'The Boys Come To Town'. I agree, Barbara Pennington is a superb vocalist. Her Record Shack material was excellent. I think almighty did a great remix of '24 Hours A Day' giving it a great update.

I recently asked Ian Levine if he had been in touch with Ms Pennington, he told me that she now worked as a security guard delivering money to banks in chicago. "24 hours a day" is a IMHO one of the besty disco records ever, inerestingly agreement had beem reached with Tom Moulton to remix it in 1978 but the project got shelved and eventually never happened. I bet that would have been great. I must admit that I'm not to keen on her later stuff for record Shack/ Nightmare.

I was unaware that she did "Vanity".
Was this a single or part of an album?

I heard the song at Heaven once and just assumed it was the Carol Jiani version though it didn't quite sound the same.

    Hi Jim !
Her version of Vanity was never released as a single. It was later included in the re-issue CD album OUT OF THE DARKEST NIGHT (as a bonus track) released in 1995 by HOT records in Miami.
