    Hey Kevin,

I can't thank you enough for that additional information!!!
    :D :D :D :D :D

Your old post with all the info about the 1975 12" promos was so helpful and informative to me. I constantly referred to that list each week. I hoped you would post again. :D --I'm so happy you provided me with this additional info on what was a 12" and what wasn't. It appears that most of the hits by now (May 1976) were being released in that format, eh?

Please keep posting--you seem to have all this stuff catalogued and organized for instant access!!!

I thought you were from SF and had DJ'd there...so it was really Reno?

Now a question.... when several tracks from an LP are charting in different places such as the Silver Convention or Melba Moore LP --should I keep each title separate as I've tried to do or just bundle everything from one source together as one item? I've thought it would be better to keep them separate so as not to overstate their impact--but I'm wondering if I should rethink that. When the National chart starts they bundle everything together---so maybe I should get on board now?

My initial decision stemmed from the "Lady Marmalade/ What Can I Do For You" bundling which I listed as one item--but in checking their actual point totals for each mention--LM had about 100 more points than WCIDFY--so at that point I thought I would try to keep each title as its own entity if they had different totals in any given week--unless some chart was listing the whole LP--then I bundled as with The Trammps & The Brothers, etc.

    Any thoughts?

Hey Markey - thanks for the kind words! And glad that you found the 1975 12" info useful.

I was a club DJ in Reno from 1976 to 1979. I then went to Oslo and London and worked in a couple of clubs in 1979 and 1980. After that, I did mobile dj work back in Reno until 1990. I moved to SF in 1994 and recently moved to Phoenix. I used to get to SF a couple of times a year during my DJ days, and I would make my pilgrimage to Aloha Records every time I went, which was not often enough! So perhaps our paths crossed a time or two...

Living in the Castro was a wonderful experience - I miss it!!! I especially miss digging in the bins at my favorite used record stores around the bay area. I remember you posting about all the great disco scores you made at Amoeba Records when they opened their LA store - I had the same experience when the Amoeba records opened in the Haight... they had tons of disco 12”ers for first 2 or 3 years and then it started to dry up. My collection grew by leaps and bounds in SF ;-)

Regarding your question on how to list multiple tracks from the same lp which were reported on different charts, I am thinking that you might just want to consolidate them into a single listing, just like you are doing for The Trammps and The Brothers lps. I like the way you still can see which charts are reporting which tracks with your alpha codes... It might over-emphasize the importance of some secondary tracks, but that is what the national chart will be doing. I seem to recall that the national chart would list the tracks on a single album in descending order of popularity, so you might list the tracks with the highest points first, if you are not already doing so.

Will do my best to post more often.

    Kevin

Marky .... can I chime in a bit ??  Don't mean to be giving you such a rough time on this issue  ( but for some reason you do bring out the devil in me !! :P  )

I'm not sure there is an entirely right or wrong answer to this one . For one thing we (you) are at the mercy of data collected many years ago .... watcha got is watcha got. I am suspect of some of the reporting .... because I remember how is was back then ....every store , DJ wanted to be the coolest . So they tended to over report personal favorites or releases they were predicting about to go big ... and then too quickly dropped some of the stuff that actually was still quite hot . Nothing anyone can do about that ..... that was part of the competitive engine that made it all so exiciting I guess .....

I have mentioned this before ..... the one angle I am most suspicious of are the retail reporters ....because I don't see how they are able to report that any given record is selling because of any particular cut . I contend that once the buyer is not buying a 45 ( or soon a 12" !! ) then they are buying the entire current project of the artist which includes any and all dance tunes found therein.

One of the benefits of these split reportings though is that they do call to our attention that it isn't always solely the biggest , most obvious tune getting played .... other songs besides "THIS IS IT " by Melba Moore are getting played too. Still if a chart only reports "BRAND NEW " .... are we supposed to believe that "THIS IS IT " is not getting played, bought?

Marky ..you have the advantage of having the actual charts you are working from ... so seeing them first hand gives you some better insight ......for instance .... I see Chart "D" is the only one to report "BRAND NEW " ...but then i see that that same chart , "D" , is also listed by you as one that reported "THIS IS IT " . So on that chart .... Chart "D" ..... is Melba Moore ranked in two different places ..... or ..... on that chart are the two bundled??

Any chance that just once ... in your spare time :P!!! ....... you could post say just the Colony Records chart you are working from .... so we could better understand the raw data too ....

See I told you , you bring out the devil in me !!!! :P :P

    End of Part I :

as always ..... let me close by saying you are doing a great job .... such a wealth of information for all to benefit from ........... :D 8) :D 8)

    Disco Action

Record World "National Disco File Top 20" #1: TRY ME, I KNOW WE CAN MAKE IT (week #1); (This is the chart being used by Joel Whitburn in his book for this time period--you know, the one chart versus 5 or 6, sometimes 7-- chart thang.)

But I've resolved that issue by combining the current 6 Billboard charts into one.

New Rule: from now on there will be a constant 6 charts published each week through the end of August, 1976--when a national chart takes the place of this format. 3 NYC retailers and 3 audience response charts from NYC, LA/San Diego and a guest city will be printed each week.

    Billboard charts:

A= Top 15 Audience Response Records in NYC Discos
(#1= ”A LOVE TRILOGY” LP ( All Cuts)) (3rd week)
B= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Downstairs Records (NYC)
(#1= YOU’VE GOT WHAT IT TAKES (To Please Your Woman)) (1st week)
C= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Colony Records (NYC)
(#1= THAT’S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO) (7th week)
D= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Melody Song Shops (Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island)
(#1= THAT’S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO) (2nd nonconsecutive week; was #1 on 3/20/76 )
E= Top 15 Audience Response Records in LA/ San Diego Discos:
(#1= TRY ME, I KNOW WE CAN MAKE IT / COULD IT BE MAGIC (3rd week)
F= Special Guest City Chart: Top 15 Audience Response Records in Boston Discos:
(#1 = ”WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO” LP (All Cuts)) (1st reported week)

6 charts with 15 items apiece; 15 points for a #1; 1 point for a #15; 90 maximum points. Add them up and voila!....

    What's It All About, Mar-keeey???
(Is it just for old disco we live???..... ..well is it???)

At long last, the Trammps move up to #1. The single has charted 12 weeks and the LP has charted for 2 weeks.

    This week, charts A (NYC discos) + F (Boston discos) say : “LP, all cuts” (A= #2; F= #1)
C holds the single @ #1 for the 7th week.
B moves the single from #7 up to #4
D moves the single from #4 up to #1
E moves the single from #6 up to #5 (this is as high as LA ever charts it)

I’m thinking that B,C, D & E probably meant to chart the LP “Where The Happy People Go” as opposed to the single “THAT’S Where The Happy People Go”---but that’s not how it’s printed. Next week, all 4 list the LP-all cuts and only the guest chart F from Houston lists the single…from then on it’s the LP-all cuts…..

    The screwed list:
Donna Summer is dropped by chart C.
Ecstasy, Passion & Pain will never be on chart E.
Vicki Sue Robinson is no longer on chart D.
Melba Moore’s “This Is It” is off B (they are only charting other LP tracks “Free/ Play Boyscout”
Jackie Robinson is no longer on that chart what first brung her---E!!!!

    Add Insult to Injury List:
Miss Ross is double-dumped (ouch!!!) :x  by B (not charting the 5th Dimension, either!!!!---they’re OVER the “Love Hangover” it seems…. And chart D (only charts the 5th D version this week)….chart A & C are charting BOTH Diana & 5th D.

The More I Get, The Lower I Chart Dept:
Oddly Jimmy James & the Vagabonds seem to be having a reverse success… each week as they acquire more points—they chart lower!!!

    4/17 with 3 points they were #36
    4/24 with 5 points they were #37
    5/01 with 6 points they are #38!!!!!

Of the debuts, Jesse Green’s “Nice & Slow” is charted for the first time on E (LA) & F (Boston); odd for a NYC (Scepter) record mixed by Moulton’s pal Mel Cheren himself…next week NYC’s chart B finds it also.

Note that chart B has flipped “A Fifth Of Beethoven” for a brief mention of the b-side “California Strut” with a vocal by newcomer credited as Angie Bofill…..later Angie Dickinson…no… uh, ANGELA Bofilll!!!

And lastly, the landmark Double Exposure record “Ten Percent” (still listed as “10 %”) debuts on chart A as “Walter Gibbons special version”…..the first time a remixer has been mentioned by name. Moulton says in his column that a competion was held with NYC DJs to remix this track and Gibbons was declared the winner. Moulton also says the long version won’t be released commercially ……..BUT WITHIN 2 WEEKS, SALSOUL WILL BE THE FIRST COMPANY TO RELEASE A 12" TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC. .

(Also, note that Moulton says the version of “My Love Supreme” he has charted @ #15 on chart A is “not commercially available”) Things will soon change….the peeps want the DISCO DISK VERSIONS!!!!!

    THE BIG TEASE

Next week, a whole lotta movement takes place: 2 new records crack the Top 10 and a slew of others move into the Top 20. The highest debut is a new title from Bohannon. Other debuts are from D.C. LaRue, Hokis Pokis ( still says “Hocus Pocus” as it did with “Nowhere”), Sweet Music, the Righteous Brothers (!!!), the Pretty Maid Company (just for Jussik!!) and a newcomer named just…”Luther.”

    DISCO MIX by Tom Moulton

    Column #79: 5/01/76

(Thanks to shootyourshot for typing out & sending me this column. BTW, shootyourshot, I’ve been trying to e-mail you for some help with a couple things and I can’t seem to get the new address you gave me to go through….please contact me when you have a minute. Thanks. ) :D

[NEW YORK] Keeping up its disco image, Midland International has released a new album by the Inner City Symphony. Standout on the LP is “Inner City Suite,” with a funky and catchy “Time Flies” and Philadelphia-sounding “She Loves Me” following closely.

Also on the disk are remakes of “Fly, Robin, Fly” and “Theme From SWAT.” Both are well-handled. Warren Schatz picks up another solid production credit as well

A few weeks ago Salsoul released a 12 inch disco disk of “Ten Percent” [says “10%”] by Double Exposure with a 7 minute version on one side and a 9 minute version on the other, both of which will not be commercially available. (if only Tom knew)

Local spinners have been given the opportunity to put together their own versions and DJ Walter Gibbons has come up with a winner, as local audience response propels it on the disco charts this week. There will be a shorter commercial version available shortly, but it won’t have the instrumental sections with breaks, both of which are strong assets to Gibbons’ version.

“I Got Your Love” by Stratavarious, featuring Lady, has been released by Polydor of Canada both commercially and as a 12-inch disco disk. While the label circulated only some 200 12-inch disco disks there, a number of them have reached New York and the response has been strong. Basically, the sound of the record matches up to the sound from Philadelphia.

Started with cd #2 today …...love Donna’s “Now I Need You” into Eurythmics “Love Is A Stranger” into Noel’s “The Night They Invented Love” and the whole rest of that cd. Currently on cd #3 now!! (love the juxtapostion of Cerrone’s “Black Is Black” into Giorgio’s “I Wanna Funk With You Tonight”) Great stuff!!! Lots to comment on this week's chart Marky . :D

As an aside ..... I look forward to the day of finding "MOVING LIKE A SUPERSTAR " . I have no recollection of this tune , but its chart performance has sure been impressive. That's the biggest one of 16/17 on the list I can't identify . ( and I was there ! ) ........ (Records to hunt !!! 8) )

    Trivia :
The two versions of the same song LOVE HANGOVER have now worked their way up onto this week's Top 10 at the same time . I suspect that never happens again in the history of the charts . (?).... I can think of very few disco songs that had competing versions ( LOVE IS IN THE AIR " ) ? ... especially at the same time with both being so strong .... so this may be a one time only occurrence .....

    More Trivia :
Thank the disco gods ..... it took 3 months (an eternity in discoland time ) ..... but "THAT'S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO" .... has clawed its way past the ladies to the top . 8) Does any song past or present ever again take so long ... 12 weeks ... to hit the mark ?? :-?

--- The biggest news this week ( and it is big ) :

    45) * TEN PERCENT – Double Exposure
(Salsoul 12” – Walter Gibbons Special Version/ Promo only) so far !!
1 week on the chart/ DEBUT

At last , there it is ...... :D ....... the arrival of the song that's going to really make a statement about disco ..... becoming the first tune ever available to the public as a 12" pressing . A defining moment ... disco has really become its own entity with this .. ... a special music with its own special presentation . Record stores would now find it hard to ignore ..... finding it necessary to dedicate a specific area for this genre now available in this , its own special format 8) 8) 8) .

I 'd love to hear any stories from anyone who remembers that transition happening back then . I don't recall who distributed Salsoul at this point ( already RCA ? ) ..... but I can just imagine their reps first trying to get orders on this .

    "What's that you say ? It's a single song .. .... but it's not on a 45? It's on a 12" ?! Why ? ... And I'm supposed to pay you more money for it ?? ..... Where am I supposed to put it in my store ???? "

I'm sure many thought it was a silly novelty .... a passing fad .... never imagining 12 inchers would become the entrenched staple they remained throughout the vinyl era .... Of course looking back now it seems a non- brainer ... but imagine then ... trying to convince retailers they could successfully sell what had always been on a 45 ( for 20 +years !) ... only now on a bigger size for 2 or 3 times the price .... I wonder what the total sales of this first one was ?
( Thank goodness they chose this , a monster hit, to release as their first tester ! :D )

Disco has definitely arrived : the music's top notch , the clubs are increasingly opening , and now it is about to seriously invade the record stores. 8) :D

Typed while listening to this week's # 31 song :
TUBULAR BELLS –-- Champs’ Boys Orchestra A wonderful orchestration giving this haunting song a much more friendly vibe .... using (stealing) "LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY's bass line verbatim played underneath ......

    Amazing

Marky - sorry to hear of your mishap. I have a suggestion (and this is what I do when I find inspiration for long posts)... I type it in Word before copy-pasting it into here.

Compliments to your "monks work" (a Dutch expression which I am not sure translatet ).

    Keep it up!

Chart "D" ..... is Melba Moore ranked in two different places ..... or ..... on that chart are the two bundled??

Any chance that just once ... in your spare time :P!!! ....... you could post say just the Colony Records chart you are working from .... so we could better understand the raw data too ....
OK, sorry kidz I've been sick in bed this week--so no new chart-- :( but I am gonna give you the actual 6 charts used to compile last weeks chart--so you can see where the data came from; I've tried not to change a letter--the misspellings, wrong labels, etc. are intact. The only thing I added were the (15 points) etc, behind each title to show how the points were calculated... now
I know some one will ask if Billboard put the point #s there--so the answer is NO--I did--but everything else is just as it was printed!!!!!

OK go make your own chart!!! :P

I have started typing in Word--it's much better to save things and I've had fewer problems. I type it in little sections and save it and come back later and add more. Before I used to do marathon typing sessions here!!!!

Nice to hear from you. Glad you enjoy my work!! :D

Record World "National Disco File Top 20" #1: TRY ME, I KNOW WE CAN MAKE IT (week #2); (This is the chart being used by Joel Whitburn in his book for this time period--you know, the one chart versus 5 or 6, sometimes 7-- chart thang.)

(#1= “WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO” LP ( All Cuts)) (1st week)
B= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Downstairs Records (NYC)
(#1= “WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO” LP ( All Cuts)) (1st week)
C= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Colony Records (NYC)
(#1= “WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO” LP (All Cuts)) (1st week)
D= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Melody Song Shops (Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island)
(#1= “WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO” LP (All Cuts)) (1st week)
E= Top 15 Audience Response Records in LA/ San Diego Discos:
(#1= TRY ME, I KNOW WE CAN MAKE IT / COULD IT BE MAGIC (4th week)
F= Special Guest City Chart: Top 15 Audience Response Records in Houston, Texas Discos:
(#1 = MORE, MORE, MORE) (1st reported week)

6 charts with 15 items apiece; 15 points for a #1; 1 point for a #15; 90 maximum points. Add them up and voila!....

    What's It All About, Mar-keeey???
(Is it just for old disco we live???..... ..well is it???)

THE “USUAL SUSPECTS” MEET THE SUPREMES!!!!!

The Trammps rule the chart once again; the rest of the “usual suspects” are showing signs of wear and tear but are still holding on….enter Mary, Scherrie & Susaye, the latest incarnation of The Supremes, sashaying up to #5 this week with their 3:33 minute “I’m Gonna Let My Heart Do The Walking.” Miss Ross, former Supreme, now an Academy Award-nominated actress & all-around performing Superstar, asks: “Who let them in here??? BER-REEEEEEY!!!!!!" :P  :P

The Trammps are across the board #1 in NYC; #5 in LA; #4 in Houston, Texas (the last time the single “TWTHPG” is charted…from now it will be the entire LP) . The Trammps grab 83 out of a possible 90 points—next week they have their absolute best score.

    Same As It Ever Was….
The rest of the “usual suspects” are losing steam—but still hangin’ on. Of the Top 10, 2 are newcomers this week (The Supremes & Foxy), 1 has logged 4 weeks in the top 10 (Jackie Robinson); two have 6 weeks (EP&P & Melba Moore), one 7 weeks (Donna Summer), Silver Convention (“GU&B”) have 8 weeks, Miss Ross, 10 and Vicki Sue, 11.

    Donna loses chart B
Diana off chart B also. (Only A & C still bundling with 5th Dimension)
    Vicki Sue not on B & C.
EP&P only on 4 NYC charts.
    Jackie Robinson off chart C.
Silver Convention (“GU&B”) not on chart B & D (B is charting “You’ve Got What It Takes”; D has no Silver Convention this week.)

The next stretch (11-20) sees a whole lotta new titles movin’ on up…. Including
    Rain Forest
    Nice & Slow
    No, No, Joe
    Tubular Bells
I”ll Go Where Your Music Takes Me
    & Young Hearts Run Free

Further down @ #26 this week is the future smash “Ten Percent”; still only on chart A this week. Next week it expands to one retailer (D) and the LA chart. The 12” single is reported to have been released in next week’s Billboard. The charts don’t actually report the term "12” disco disk” until the 5/29/76 chart—but I’ve gotta assume that’s what is gonna chart on all the retailers—I don’t think people bought a whole lotta 7” versions after the 12” was made available. :-?

2 titles debut from Hamilton Bohannon, but the debut with the most potential is @ #31—D. C. LaRue’s “Cathedrals” appearing on both charts A & C for the first time. The Righteous Brothers also chart a record titled Hold On (To What You Got)” which I am assuming is a cover of the old Joe Tex record from 1965—anyone know????

Note the guest chart is from Houston, Texas (a first) and how behind the times they seem compared to NYC. “More, More, More” would have dropped off the chart this week—except Houston charts it #1; It’s not been #1 here since the 1st week of March. Likewise “Street Talk” (#7); “Disco Fever/ I Love To Love” (#8.), “Right Back Where We Started From” (#9); “Movin’/ Changin’ “ (#11); “More” (#12) are only charting here….the middle of the country is a tad behind the right & left coasts.

Next week, we have 43 items, the Top 10 admits two new items. Debuts include a classic from Yvonne Fair (gawd bless LA for mentioning this one); Sammy Gordon, Michel Polnareff, Brothers Johnson & Miroslav Vitous.

We have a 3-way with Miss Ross tying and vying with new arch-rival Donna Summer and blast from the Brewster Projects past, old nemesis Mary Wilson and her new Supremes. All have 53 points. I will have to play Solomon and divvy up the chart positions as I see fit. [correction: actually it's just a tie between Diana & Donna (Diana has 5 charts, Donna has 4); the Supremes have one less point than I'd originally assigned them.]

Billboard also publishes 2 articles of interest:
    1) “Salsoul has 12 Inch Disco Single"
    2) “Club DJs Mixing Masters” (how much do you suppose Walter Gibbons was paid for mixing “Ten Percent”??? The answer is in the article.)
(I have the bulk of these articles but I’m missing the opening paragraphs. Shootyourshot is gonna try to obtain them from his library visits. When I get them, I’ll type em’ out

    _________________________________________________

    DISCO MIX by Tom Moulton

    Column #80: 5/08/76

(Thanks to shootyourshot for providing this column.)

[NEW YORK] Soon to be released by Atco is the new Damon Harris & Impact (says “& The Impacts”) LP. Overall the disk sounds like a winner, with special honors going to the cuts “Give A Broken Heart A Break” and “Happy Man,” the group’s current hit single.

“Give A Broken heart A Break,” though, is the stronger song, showing off the group’s tight harmonies with a melodic, pulsating rhythm. Length of the cut is 5:51. “Happy Man” is 6:08, the same as the single.

Other strong cuts on the record are “Winning Combination” and “It Only Happens In The Movies,” which was originally written for and recorded by the Sons Of Robin Stone, [says “Robinstone”] although never released. Bobby Eli wrote all the tunes here, with collaboration on most coming from Len Barry. Arrangement and production credits also go to Eli, and it's a job well done.

D.C. LaRue's "Ca-the-drals" LP (Pyramid) stacks up as the strongest new record out this week. Creating all the excitement is the title cut, which has a definite similarity to "Cathedrals"(???) and the New York classic "Melting Pot" by Boris Gardiner. The beginning of the song sounds a lot like the latter numbers, but soon shifts to a Donna Summer type sound.

Scepter is releasing a special 12-inch disco disk of Jesse Green's "Nice And Slow", with a new version of Sweet Music's "I Get Lifted" on the flip side. The song has been remixed and is basically instrumental. The song starts off with just drums and guitar and builds slowly. It sounds like a completely different record remixed and word is that if it does anything disco-wise it'll be released on the flip side of the commercial vocal version.

Atlantic has rush-released Michel Polnareff's "Lipstick" (part 1 & 2) single from the motion picture of the same name. There will be a 12-inch disco disk combining both parts which will be available next week. The soundtrack LP will be released in mid-May. The single has a funky rhythm track which builds to a full (Gene Page type) orchestrated sound.

Island Records in England has released "For The Love Of Money" by the Disco Dub Band on its subsidiary label Movers. The song sounds nothing like the original but has a very funky approach with drums and bass. There are several guitars that keep playing different riffs that seem to bounce back and forth.

The Vast Majority's LP has been released on D & M Sound and there are several good cuts – "Move It", the strongest and also title cut; "Love For Sale", the group's first single; "Salsa Woman", more in the Latin vein with flutes and all; and "Oceans Apart", melodic and a bit slower. The overall sound is very full. This studio group consists of 60 musicians.

I’ve got to take a break for a few weeks –I’m gonna continue to work behind the scenes—but I won’t be able to get a new chart out every week for the next few months…maybe every 3 or 4 weeks…..but I ain’t quittin’

OK, I corrected some errors on the chart I posted yesterday. Notably Donna Summer has 58 points (I didn't edit the 67 from the previous week) and I had some of the stats incorrect cause I'd orignally left out 2 entries. I found my error--but I didn't correct everything that that discovery effected. Now I think I have. Also, the 3-way tie I'd predicted for next week betwen Diana, Donna & the Supremes...is actually only between Diana & Donna; The Supremes has one less point than I'd originally assigned them. I musta had too many Mike's Hard Lemondes the night I added that up!!!  :P

Not quite as many obscurities on this chart, but wow.. The Trammps are on fire!! I've been a bit slow in checking out their material, what with how ubiquitous "Disco Inferno" is, but I'll probably end up looking for some of their albums now..

The Girls catching up to Miss Ross, with two entries in the charts and a big jump to #5, awesome! A reunion in the top 10.. "Someday we'll be Together" allright.. :)

The Righteous Brothers also chart a record titled Hold On (To What You Got)” which I am assuming is a cover of the old Joe Tex record from 1965—anyone know????
Marky, I don't think is a cover, Tex's song is "Hold what you've got " written by him according to amg.

    38. LA VITA – Fussy Cussy
    (Aquarius 45) (5 points/ E)
This one is a nice fun Canadian release, heavy bass with Rockish lead guitar and nice breakdown with male chantings a la Chocolat's saying "La Vita es como una Rosa" ..(Life is like a rose)

    Disco Action
Record World "National Disco File Top 20" #1: TRY ME, I KNOW WE CAN MAKE IT (week #3); (This is the chart being used by Joel Whitburn in his book for this time period--you know, the one chart versus 5 or 6, sometimes 7-- chart thang.)

(#1= “WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO” LP ( All Cuts)) (2nd week)
B= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Downstairs Records (NYC)
(#1= “WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO” LP ( All Cuts)) (2nd week)
C= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Colony Records (NYC)
(#1= “WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO” LP (All Cuts)) (2nd week)
D= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Melody Song Shops (Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island)
(#1= “WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO” LP (All Cuts)) (2nd week)
E= Top 15 Audience Response Records in LA/ San Diego Discos:
(#1= TRY ME, I KNOW WE CAN MAKE IT / COULD IT BE MAGIC (5th week)
F= Special Guest City Chart: Top 15 Audience Response Records in Boston Discos:
(#1 = ”WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO” LP (All Cuts)) (2nd reported week)

6 charts with 15 items apiece; 15 points for a #1; 1 point for a #15; 90 maximum points. Add them up and voila!....

This week I’m debuting a new featured column…..

"THE DIRTY LOWDOWN" On This Week's Releases…. by In-the-Groove…

Kevin (in-the-groove), former dj and now disco record archivist, supplied that exhaustive list of 12” promos that I copied for the end of the 1975 charts. He’s supplied me with info from time to time and I’ve asked him to comment on the new week’s releases as time allows…. Read this and you’ll know why.

    in-the groove:
I would love to help you out with the charts each week!
About 10 years ago, I started putting together a discography of promotional and commercial disco pressings, mostly because there was absolutely no information on disco 12"ers out there from a collectors standpoint. After I got online, I found a lot of information from others who were also trying to document disco vinyl, but I also have gathered info from records I see while out 'beating the bushes', in used record shops, and on ebay. I have attempted to organize all this info so that it makes the most sense. I also have tried to include timings for every listing, and also comments on what pressings have remixes. I probably still spend 10 or 15 hours each week adding and updating it with info I come across. I also keep track of the higher ebay auction results for the rarer pressings. The file is HUUUGE now (I maintain it in an excel spreadsheet), and I believe that it is one of the most comprehensive database of info anywhere.
So... while I have been collecting for a looong time, and I have a pretty decent collection... I don't own all of this stuff. But I try to document it all!

Here is the scoop on this week's new chart additions:
IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME - Yvonne Fair (Motown promo 12" / lp / 7") This is a pretty rare Motown 12", but the 3:34 mix is the same as the LP and commercial 7". Not sure if the lp came out immediately or not (does the chart specify lp or 7"?).

[Marky: this was the b-side of a late 1974 release ["Walk Out The Door If You Wanna"] that was a followup single to her biggest hit “Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On”; The LP “The Bitch Is Black” was released in 1975…but by the time “It Should Have Been Me” started charting in early 1976—Miss Fair had already either left or been dropped by Motown—so she couldn’t capitalize on the club success of this record. Strangely didn't even chart in the Top 100 on the R&B chart--only listed as a b-side of the aforementioned single. Did get some radio play and did chart on the Pop chart. Sad case cuz this is a stone cold “morning/sleaze” CLASSIC!!!!!]:D :D :D :D

MAKING LOVE - Sammy Gordon & the Hip Huggers (Greg promo 12"/7") There were 2 different 12" pressings of this - the first was on a dark blue label (I think this may have been promo-only but it doesn't say on the label). The second was a light blue label. I haven't heard the Universal Robot lp version you mention, but all of these were produced by Patrick Adams. He must have felt that this song should have been a hit, because he used the same backing track on TWO other records... changing the title and/or lyrics. Not sure which was first, but there was a 7" single called "Hungry" by Sandy's Gang on Sunrise Records http://www.discomusic.com/records-more/4038_0_2_0_C/. This had completely different lyrics. Then there was the Sammy Gordon version which was mostly instrumental http://www.discomusic.com/records-more/4087_0_2_0_C/, and the Pam Todd & Love Exchange vocal version which was on their first lp http://www.discomusic.com/records-more/6270_0_2_0_C/. Plus the Universal Robot version you mentioned.

[Marky: I recently found a version of this on a Panther label (French, I presume) reissue of the “Dance And Shake Your Tambourine” LP by Universal Robot Band. It’s credited to Sammy Gordon… Was he part of the URB or is it just the Patrick Adams connection?]

LIPSTICK - Michel Polnareff (Atlantic promo 12") this is a promo-only remix, longer than the lp or 7".

GET THE FUNK OUT MA FACE - Brothers Johnson (A&M) There was a 12" promo remix of this (which later was issued commercially on the flip side of Strawberry Letter 23 http://www.discomusic.com/records-more/153_0_2_0_C/), but not sure if this 12" was available when this song first charted... I remember that we had the lp / 7" version that we played for a month or 2 and then we got the 12" remix. I vividly remember the first time I played it and the crowd went nuts... Does the chart say LP, and if so, does a future chart show the 12" being issued?

[Marky: The second time this charts in Boston in late May, 1976, the term “disco disk” is used…so I’m presuming that the promo was available at this time.]

NEW YORK CITY - Miroslav Vitous (Warner Bros. 12" promo/lp) - there was a rare promo 12" which features the same mix as the lp. http://www.discomusic.com/records-more/4064_0_2_0_C/

    What's It All About, Mar-keeey???
(Is it just for old disco we live???..... ..well is it???)

THE TRAMMPS HAVE THE BEST SCORE EVER!!!

With 85 out of a possible 90 points, the Trammps get the best score we’ve ever had with 6 charts. Only LA’s #6 ranking ruins what coulda been a perfect score for The Trammps. (peeking ahead…later in the summer of 1976 another group will achieve 86 points with the 6 chart format.)

Miss Ross, AKA TENACIOUS "D", wills hersef back up to #2; technically tied with Donna Summer, but Miss Ross is on 5 charts and Donna is on 4—so Miss Ross gets the #2 spot. Yeah, I'm playing GOD--it's one of the perks that comes with this job :P . Miss Ross will do anything to keep Mary Wilson @ #4 from surpassing her on the chart. “Stay down there, Mary…you look good down there!!! Actually, you'd look better at #34 with an anchor!!!” :P  Mary, shouts up to Tenacious D, “You can’t stay up there forever, bitch. Remember, the “Spinning Wheel”—what goes up--- MUST COME DOWN!!!” :P

Chart B—the notoriously fickle, sometime BIZARRE Downstairs Records has dropped both Diana & Donna and refuses to chart the Supremes until June 12!!!

Jesse Green (#7) and Biddu (#9) move into the Top 10 for the first time. VS Robinson, EP&P, Melba Moore & Jackie Robinson remain Top 10...but are showing signs of wear and tear….

Just outside the Top 10, Jimmy James & the Vagabonds and, most auspiciously, Double Exposure wait patiently till next week to gain admittance to the upper echelon.. The Double Exposure 12” commercial single charts for the first time on a retailer (chart D); it’s not listed as a 12" until the 5/29/76 chart, however. But the single was released to the “punter public” this week, according to an article in Billboard. When I get the opening paragraphs of that article, (are you out there, shootyourshot??) I’ll provide it in its entirety.

The debuts include a brief mention of the wonderful Yvonne Fair cover of “It Should Have Been Me (originally done by Kim Weston, then by Gladys Knight); the theme from the crappy rape-revenge potboiler flick “Lipstick” (starring the Hemingway sisters—Margaux & Mariel) [“totally wretched film”— says Leonard Maltin]; many people seem to love this instrumental. This will have the most momentum of this weeks debuts.

Next week, we expand to 50 items, the top 10 admits 2 new items (I think I gave that one away already…) 12 records debut, including one classic by Tavares (charting first in LA & D.C.—NYC was cool to the last Tavares record also…but it will come around) and another classic by the late Lou Rawls, showcasing Gamble & Huff on one of their most slinky & sensuous grooves. Other titles are by The Brothers, Biddu Orchestra, D.C. LaRue, Leon Haywood, Cedar Walton, Frankie Gee, Bobby Thomas & Hotline, The Isley Brothers & drumroll, please………………THE ROLLING STONES!!! (and it ain’t time for “Miss You” yet!!!!) :P

Oh, and Miss Ross performs an amazing feat in LA.

    DISCO MIX by Tom Moulton

    Column #81: 5/15/76

(Thanks to shootyourshot for providing this column.)

[NEW YORK] Capitol Records has released it’s first 12-inch disco disk, using its top disco act Tavares for the kickoff.

The disk, “Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel,” runs 6:32 and features an energetic intro, which moves into a Van McCoy type sound. Overall, the song is not as strong as the group’s disco hit “It Only Takes A Minute,” but the melodic easy sound and flow holds everything together.

The cut is taken from the group’s forthcoming “Sky High” LP, which will ship later this month. A commercial single release will have a part 1&2 version on the 12-inch disk tune.

Buddah has just released “Dance & Free Your Mind (Part 1&2) by Sins of Satan. The group is out of Detroit and it manages to capture some of the Philly sound with this uptempo tune.

Shirley & Company have a new record out on Vibration and it’s nothing like their monster “Shame, Shame, Shame” hit of last year. Although the song is about dancing, it’s very funky and more r&b sounding than “Shame.” Shirley is singing a duet this time with Peppi Marchello and the sound is completely different. [never gives the title!!!... for the record, it was "I Like To Dance"] :-? :o

Midland International will be releasing “Take A Little,” the debut single from the group Liquid Pleasure. Richie Pampanella, DJ at the Hippopotamus club here, says that he’s been getting strong response on the test pressing. The sound of the record is similar to Gary Toms Empire. It was produced by Jerry Love.

There’s another debut single out as well from Eli’s Second Coming on the T.K.-distributed Silver Blue label. “Love Chant” has already garnered good early reaction off of the few test pressing circulated.

The song has a guitar hook line that reminds one of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” as well as sensuous female vocal tracks and a funky Philly rhythm sound throughout. It was produced by Bobby Eli.

LIPSTICK - Michel Polnareff (Atlantic promo 12") this is a promo-only remix, longer than the lp or 7"
remember that Part II is very different as discussed around here a while back and pointed out first by Quinny.

the in-the- groove columns are a welcome addition, as I love all this trivia about old vinyl I tip my hat to him for compiling all this info, what a task! I did the Ebay saving high price bids thing for a while , but mostly gave it all up, the time spent in front of this screen was getting out of hand

OK, I corrected my typos and added a few tidbits that I didn't have at my disposal yesterday...the name of the Yvonne Fair single that had "It Should Have Been Me" on the b-side and the title of the Shirley & Company single and a few assorted snarky remarks too

Not sure which was first, but there was a 7" single called "Hungry" by Sandy's Gang on Sunrise Records

i have the sammy gordon 12" on a white promo, dont know if that helps but i suppose that could be a promo of the light blue release.
in my memory sandys gang came second.

Hey Mixmachine - thanks for the kind words... hope that I can contribute enough to Marky's thread to keep it interesting, and I am sure that there will be more 'discoveries' that others will be able to contribute - should be fun! BTW, thanks for the scoop on the alternative mix on the Lipstick 7" that Quinny first posted about (and for the great entries that you regularly place in the vault!) http://www.discomusic.com/records-more/6815_0_2_0_C/

Discodisk - regarding Sammy Gordon, my list shows that indeed there was a white-label promo of the 2nd pressing. And I also found after my original email to Marky that there was one more pressing in addition to those already mentioned! Here is the scoop...

First pressing - dark blue label, the logo is simple silver letters that say "Greg", the label incorrectly states that there is a 3:15 mix on both sides. I think that this is promo only because all the copies that I have seen have a handwritten correction of the running time on both sides, indicating that the time is 7:02 (pretty hard to see blue ink corrections on a dark blue label... but they are there!). I can't imagine anyone handwriting corrections on every copy of a commercial pressing, and the handwriting on the ones I have seen is the same... anyone else have a copy of this pressing that can help confirm this too?

Second pressing - light blue background, has "Greg" in black letters over a red Pyramid logo. Running time listed on side A is corrected (7:02), plus side B now has a 5:00 edit. There was also a white label promo of this pressing (I think this is probably the one you mentioned, Discodisk)

Third pressing - light blue background, has "Red Greg" in black letters over a red Pyramid logo. Same running times as second pressing. I have not seen a WLP of this one. Patrick Adams and Greg Carmichael changed the label name to Red Greg for all subsequent releases on this label.

I also forgot to mention to Marky in my original email that there were two pressing variations for the Brothers Johnson 12"... the first 12" promo had the 6:01 disco version on side "A" and a 2:27 'special radio edit' on the 'B' side. The second 12" promo had the 6:01 disco version on both sides. Both pressings had the same black and white picture sleeve.

    hurray

Add me to the welcome list, :D I-T-G !
So delighted to see such effort being applied toward documenting some of this stuff !! 8) The more info , stats, and scandal the better !! I'll look forward to these "new and amended " compilation charts !

I have one slight lil' suggestion ....and don't worry, my feelings will quickly recover if my brilliant idea is declined ..... I think your column should be called " The Dirty Lowdown" ........
    ________

I didn't realize Yvonne Fair's " IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME " made it to the disco chart..... 8)

Back then I was keeping an eye on this song's slow climb up Billboard's Hot 100 . ( I really liked it) . It was stalling well below the critical breaking point of #40 ... so I was thrilled when while in my car in SF I heard it getting play on KFRC (anyone else remember Dr. Don Rose ?? 8) ) .... Becoming an early add-on there like that pretty much guaranteed it was going to go on up. Once a record broke on the biggest station in a big market like SF ..... it became a much easier record to promote and other regions tended to follow .....
But , sadly , it got just a couple of weeks of play... and disappeared . :(

By the way, the 45's "B" side ... a cover of Chaka's TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD ..... is fierce .

OK, so now it's THE DIRTY LOWDOWN ©remicks!!!!!!! I did think of that....but didn't know if "dirty" was the precise term...however, in honor of the great Boz Scaggs tune which is coming soon to the chart....I'll defer to your suggestion.

Glad you enjoyed the input from in-the-groove. The release patterns and various format availabilities of these records is so convoluted and confusing, I thought his input might shed some needed order and concise/precise info on what indeed was available--cuz face it, I don't have a clue.

Thanks also to remicks for verifying that Yvonne Fair was played on the radio in SF--I knew this tune really well and I don't recall it from the clubs. I was surprised not to find it in the R&B Billboard chart book; it was certainly odd that it didn't chart on the R&B charts--but you say it was on the Pop chart, eh? So they reissued it with "Tell Me Something Good" on the flip side? Yvonne only charts for 1 lonely week....but it was nice she got a mention. Another classic from Norman Whitfield....
