    :oops::oops::oops: Curse these " bundled/ not bundled " confoundaries . Foiled again ! I was tired when I entered that OK …..:-P
Now I’ve looked again …..and sho ‘nuff .... there is DESTINY all by its lonesome.... just like its been for three weeks..... ( never mind )

Should’ve known you hadn’t missed it Marky …..:oops:

    20) DESTINY - Candi Staton
    (WB LP) (12 points/ E)
    3 weeks on the chart/ Last week: #20 (+/-0)

    6) YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE / RUN TO ME - Candi Staton
    ( WB 7" single/ LP / "RTM": 12" promo: 6:41) (31 points each / A___EF)
    20 weeks / 9 weeks on the chart / Last week: #12 (+6)

By the way ......... its taken 20 weeks (five months ) :icon_exclaim: But thanks to the album , YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE has finally found its way to its rightful place into the upper reaches of the chart at #6 ...( and if we bundled   the entire album ....it'd even be at #4 ) ..... well deserved for that Candi classic :-) ... and with it being but a little ol' three minute + song too !

It gets more interesting as more and more records you'll remember start charting. I just finished a list from September with 50 items!!! And I would dance to most of them!!!

Re: 1976 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

Ahhh...geez guys....you're making me blush.:)

Thanks to Jussik (the Euro-God of Disco), Fabio, and my ole pal Remicks for their kind words. :-D:-D:-D

I'm taking a break now--but I think I will do some more :-D:-D:-D...Sept 1976 - Dec. 1976 as the next project...I think I've figured out how to do it. :icon_exclaim::icon_exclaim::icon_exclaim:

I'll do a parallel track type thing: 1) type the actual Billboard Top 40 as printed with a few added bits of info, # of weeks record charted, postion last week, etc. that they didn't add at first.....

    2) Then, the following week or so-- type the complete breakdown of all the titles mentioned on all the separate city charts ( thus, a Disco Compilation Consensus Chart) with actual point totals for each track & not bundle titles from a certain artist's LP unless they have the exact same number of points. Billboard does bundle everything--so this will keep it somewhat different. This will be a long and laborious process--but I guess people do care and I like doing it--I just don't really have the time....but I shall try my best to keep up with it....just don't expect a chart on a weekly basis... m'kay???

You know Marky .....I was quite distraught when it seemed you were not going to continue with your compilations (yes --- distraught !!! ) But thought better of protesting too much .......after all , it's you that has to do all the work.
You produce such a nicely composed presentation ... so smoothly formated and easy to follow ... you make it seem misleadingly easy . When I realize how much work this is to pull off ..... not just the meticulous typing and editing ... which alone is mind boggling ......but the actual tabulating and research as well .... HELL yes that’s a lot of work.
Somewhere in my selfish reasoning I’m hoping you are getting even more pleasure from this than are folks like me receiving it ( although I’ve got to tell you that that’s an awful lot ! )
So, to me it seemed a shame to stop now …. with so much of '76 completed ..…. & so looking forward to your year-end computations and reviews ...
And even though Billboard has now changed format …. we still need you to sort it out !!! For one thing .....all those cities each listing their own TOP 15 songs ......now you know there are many tunes within there , not scoring enough points to appear on the national chart ( secret regional disco songs !!!!8) :D ) we need you to flush out .
But how much even more work does this all entail …. all those charts .... I don't know .... I can't blame you for questioning taking it on ... I've always offered to help …. still do ........even if just by cheering you on .......but I don't want you to be a slave to this either ....

I know I've already said thanks for all your hard work up 'til now .....but really it can't be said enough ... I use your info ALL THE TIME !! Thank you for moving like a chart making superstar ! :D 8-) :D

    love,

Re: 1976 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

    Hey remicks,

I know you and some others really get a charge out of the charts. I, myself, do too and, if I didn't have a job--I'd probably be somewhere in 1977 by now! ;) However, I find I have been neglecting certain areas of my life [like house-cleaning!!!] trying to get a chart done on a regular basis for around 2 years + several months--I started it in May 2004!!! [I originally typed May 2005-I forgot about a whole year!!!] To complicate matters, I haven't had a computer at my home during this whole time and have had to do all this from my computer at work!!!:icon_exclaim::icon_exclaim::icon_exclaim: So, the plan is to take an unused office computer home and eventually start doing this at night--instead of spending my weekends at my office desk. :icon_idea::oops::icon_idea:

I've calculated the points of the songs charting til the end of 1976. The list fluctuates in the 80-100+ titles (by not bundling)....so it's gonna be a whole lot more work now--but more consistent with less dropoffs on a weekly basis....so I'm working behind the scenes. When I get some actual charts done--I'll start typing.

Next up, I'm gonna do the Top 40 biggest sellers from each of the 3 NYC retailers, since we now bid them adieu...using the end of 1975 list, I've added the titles from 1976 that qualify in a Top 40 ranking....that should be ready pretty soon...the rest will follow as time allows.

Don't ya wanna kick yourself for missing this Troc party??? :-o;) Some of my absolute faves in that playlist--I always liked the funky r&B side of disco....and often had to march in place for hours on the dancefloor thru "Hills Of Katmandu" or "Your Love' to get a nice hit of "Seabiscuit In The Fifth"....;)

Re: 1976 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

LET"S HEAR IT FOR THE RETAIL STORES!!!!:grin::grin:

The 3 New York retailers leave the Billboard chart tabulations as of 8/28/76. They have had a major effect on the "Compilation Consensus" charts compiled here thus far. Frustratingly, dropping records when they are at their peak in the clubs-- but interestingly, providing most of the obscure titles people have forgotten about.....

    About Downstairs Records

Downstairs Records opened in February of 1970. It was originally located in the subway arcade on the corner of 42nd Street and Sixth Avenue. (Which is where the name comes from.) You had to walk down a flight of stairs to enter the store. It was in the same location as a famous store called "Times Square Records." We opened the store one year after their closing. It is a family owned store in business now for over 29 years.

We have gotten many awards over the years, like best dance music store of the decade and we have received many gold records for helping to promote new artists like Chic, Dr. Buzzards Original Savannah Band, Billy Joel, Elvis Presley [new artist in the Seventies???!!!], Marvin Gaye, Lionel Ritchie [Richie], and the Temptations.

We supply many broadway plays with music. We helped on the movie soundtrack for "Bronx Tale". Many personalities come into the store looking for that hard to get song, or that perfect song to go with a special scene. Our customer base includes Bruce Willis, Matt Dillon, Diana Ross, Donna Summer, Chris Rock, Rachel [Raquel!] Welch, Isaac Hayes, Dennis Miller (from HBO) and many more!

CHART B = TOP RETAIL SELLERS (DOWNSTAIRS RECORDS- NYC)

    from 10/26/74 - 8/28/76

At the time I compiled the 1975 stats, I wrote: "The trendiest of all the retail charts. Usually finds the hot records first--then drops 'em real fast. The top record here has only 129 points and only 3 others have more than 100 points. [update: by the end of August, 1976, one record has surpassed that total and now 6 others have topped the 100 point total...very few compared to the other 2 retailers.];-)

"I'd liken Chart B & C (Colony Records) to the heat-seeking & fickle Hilton Sisters. Paris is chart B; Nicky is chart C. They are at every HOT party....Paris is like a butterfly in heat to find the Hot New Thing.... ("That's HOT")--then her gnat's attention span causes her to get bored and seek out yet another party. Nicky, on the other hand, might stay a little longer, if she's having a good time. ";-)

    From the Downstairs website:
Article about Downstairs Records from Billboard Magazine

    July 9, 1979

N.Y. Retailer Relies on Specialization - Downstairs Records is a nine year old retail shop with two locations in subway stations in midtown Manhattan which specializes in disco and oldies.

And business is booming, reports owner Nick deKrechewo, because the store has chosen to specialize in these two areas while competition between major dealers here escalates to staggering heights and the smaller operations struggle for survival, victims of intense price wars.

Downstairs Records locations are 33rd St.. & 7th Ave. beneath the Statler Hilton hotel and at 1026 Sixth Ave. The store relies heavily on mail order sales to discos and DJ's across the country as well as to retail customers looking for hard to find items.

According to Mr. deKrechewo when the store was opened with the capital outlay of about $10,000 in 1970 there was the realization that the tight budget and less than prime location negated any attempts to compete with the giants on their on turf. Today, as the 27 year old executive explains, who find Downstairs Records are the ones who really need it services.

Without a doubt this is a sizable clientele, for the shop not only double its original space it also opened its second store run by Boris deKrechewo. The original facility is also up to an inventory of 300,000 in records, all fully paid for.

Downstairs Records was the first retail outlet in the city to recognize the potential of disco music, and to provide a special section for its display. Today disco accounts for 50% of all record sales at the store. More recently the company began specializing in disco imports which are big in the clubs but largely unavailable at the retail level. At present hard to find imports account for 20% of all Downstairs Records sales.

Acutely aware of the competition that would encroach on his territory. Mr. deKrechewo cannot risk relaxing his vigilance on market trends, or ignoring the needs of his customers.

To ensure that his store is several jumps ahead of anything that is new, or any trends that may be developing, he has retained a staff of experts in the field of music he covers. They include David Rodriquez, a disco DJ whom he describes as his right hand assistant. Lisa Hazel an expert in disco music who also handles much of the mail order business. Barry Terry and Warren Tesoro, formerly of the Gary Toms Empire (!), who are oldies experts. The store also stocks what Mr. deKrechewo describes as the largest selection of oldies and country singles in the city.

Downstairs Records carries an inventory of 170,000 titles representing about 1,000,000 records. The vast majority of these are 7" vinyl singles.

Mr. deKrechewo is confident that 12" disco records will never replace conventional 7" singles. He states that although the 12 inchers enjoy popularity because of their length and fidelity, they are causing confusion by the lack of standardization. Mr. deKrechewo states that customers grumble because they cannot stack the 12 inchers because of their varying speeds. He also lambasts the 12 inchers as being too expensive, difficult to store, and representing vinyl waste in an era when emphasis is on conservation. He also states that unlike 18 months ago when they were first introduced, the quality of the 12 inch disk has dropped and (a lot of garbage) is being released in this format.

As part of the strategy to maintain longevity through service, Downstairs Records functions as a consulting and programming service for DJs who are either too busy or too inexperienced to stay on top of all that is new in disco. The store advises, suggests, and complies entire programs for disco DJs at no additional costs to them. They also offer special discounts and 100% returnable warranty on all products.

In spite of this offer the return rate has remained at around 3% with only a handful of buyers abusing it. The store has also released its first disco single on it 's newly established Downstairs Records label on an experimental basis. The first release is a British import, "For the Love of Money", by the Disco Dub band. The record is on yellow vinyl because, Mr. deKrechewo explains, multicolored vinyl appears to provide a substantial incentive for impulse buyers.

Re: 1976 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

    *****

That's an impressive list of records . Wouldn't it be great if there were a venue that had an ongoing practice of playing special disco nites ...and wouldn't this list make for a great evening ..... a night of just the best of "real NYC disco "

Downstairs Records opened in February of 1970. It was originally located in the subway arcade on the corner of 42nd Street and Sixth Avenue
During a whirlwind NYC visit ... I recall going there ......but I'm wondering if my memory of it is correct ....it seems to me that you descended these subway stairs directly to the front of the store ....or rather a counter over which guys sold you records ....the stock was behind them and there wasn't much of an actual store to enter and browse thru per say .....Almost something like a coatcheck room
    .... do I have that right ??????:icon_neutral: .... anybody ? :icon_question:

Markydefad : (This LP came later than the "Feel The Need In Me" charting this week. Question: is this a remake of the Detroit Emeralds record???)
You ask Marky and sooner or later the troops will rally....

Yes Genya Ravan is doing a version of that same Detriot Emeralds song.

It has a Gloria Gaynor NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE churn to it along with TURN THE BEAT AROUND bongos .....but the overall flavour is sort of Sly & The Family Stone ..... with Genya belting it out a la Tina Turner/Janis Joplin .... on my copy her blaring voice is often distorted .... gospel like background vocals ....
Her adlibs in the song consist of a series of NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NAs ...

Love the bassline ... & the song itself. This version neither wows me nor surpasses the Detroit Emeralds version ..... but it's not gawdawful either .....

Horns provided by Kool & The Gang .....

PART 2: LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE RETAIL STORES!!!!:grin::grin:

The 3 New York retailers (Downstairs Records, Colony Records, Melody Song Shops) leave the Billboard chart tabulations as of 8/28/76. They have had a major effect on the "Compilation Consensus" charts compiled here thus far. Frustratingly, dropping records when they are at their peak in the clubs-- but interestingly, providing most of the obscure titles people have forgotten about.....

    COLONY RECORDS

[from an old post by written by our own NickNack]

"Colony was "the joint" back in the 70's. The store was unbelievable. Wall-to-wall, floor to ceiling vinyl. If Colony didn't have it, they'd GET IT!. The great thing for dj's was on weekends it would stay open until midnight or 1 AM in the morning. I remember doing some VERY last minute shopping, just before my set at The Anvil or even during sets for a friend. If my friend, Larry, had already started playing he would simply give me the money and say, "Run up to Colony --- I need this TONIGHT!! They were heavily into club music and competed quite well with the "Downstairs Records" and other stores at the time.

I believe Graham visited there last year or early this year. He was disappointed also. Nothing like it used to be."

CHART C = TOP RETAIL SELLERS (COLONY RECORDS-NYC)

Colony is trendy but MUCH more loyal to the records it likes. It usually finds 'em in tandem with Downstairs--but it keeps 'em on the charts a little bit longer--actually looking at the stats, sometimes TWICE AS LONG.
In the first period ending 12/27/75, Colony charted 235 out of 461 records-the least of the 3 retail stores.
During that time also, Colony charted 18 records with over 100 points as opposed to 4 on chart B. (The Nicky Vs. Paris Hilton factor).

Re: 1976 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

PART 3: LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE RETAIL STORES!!!!:grin::grin:

The 3 New York retailers (Downstairs Records, Colony Records, Melody Song Shops) leave the Billboard chart tabulations as of 8/28/76. They have had a major effect on the "Compilation Consensus" charts compiled here thus far. Frustratingly, dropping records when they are at their peak in the clubs-- but interestingly, providing most of the obscure titles people have forgotten about.....
    __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ _____

    MELODY SONG SHOPS:

I couldn't find any info for Melody Shop Shops on Google--so I'm assuming they are out of business...anyone have any other info??? :???::o:icon_question:

CHART D = TOP RETAIL SELLERS (MELODY SONG SHOPS- BROOKLYN, QUEENS, LONG ISLAND)

Added 11/16/74 (the 4th week) to the Billboard charts...to get a feel for what was happenin' outside Manhattan.

In the 1975 year-end roundup, I wrote, ..."If chart B & C are, respectively, Paris & Nicky Hilton..then chart D could be compared to Paris' ex- best girlfriend and partner in crime...Miss Nicole Richie!!!!

It's more one-toe-in-da-GHETTO Urban, more radio-oriented, and has a special affinity for anything Motown. ;-)

URBAN = more funky-oriented records than the charts above-- Rufus, Disco Tex, Labelle, Jimmy Castor Bunch, Bobby Womack, Strutt, Brass Construction.

RADIO-ORIENTED= only chart to list the Three Degrees' smash "When Will I See You Again" and "Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas, among others. Johnnie Taylor's "Disco Lady" would be a 1976 example...only charted here briefly, although it was a Pop & R&B #1.

LOVES DA MOTOWN= An LP by The Supremes will chart for weeks on end here and nowhere else; ditto Eddie Kendricks titles abound; Temptations, David Ruffin, Jackson 5, Michael Jackson, Commodores, Miss Ross @ #3!!!, etc.

At first, it was the most erratic--dropping things and adding them back and dropping 'em and adding 'em in--maybe this was because different locations were compiling the info? But by the end of of 1974, it (Nicole) was more in the groove with the Hilton Sisters of B & C.

Quirks did arise: #1 listing for Earth, Wind & Fire LP cuts: AFRICANO & HAPPY FEELING...no mention of SHINING STAR from the same LP; #1 listing for HAPPY by Eddie Kendricks.

But, when it's all added up...it's actually the most consistent with the final Top 100 of the Disco Compilation Consensus chart of '74-'75--charting all 50 of the top 50 and 96 of the final top 100.

At the end of 1975, Melody charted 14 records with over 100 points; 259 titles out of 461 charted here....1976 stats listed after the Top 40....

Re: 1976 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

Tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 4) I'm gonna post a DISCO COMPILATION CONSENSUS CHART : THE NEW YORK RETAILERS TOP 50 (for the period 10/26/74 - 8/28/76) I will add the points of all the records charted by each of the 3 retail outlets and make a consensus chart Top 50....To make it a little different, I'm gonna do a Casey Kasem-style countdown--starting with #50 and working my way down to #1 -- posting it item by item. Re: 1976 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

    hey marky,

i haven't thanked you in a long time for all your work on these charts. the earliest charts and moulton columns turned me on to (or reminded me of) many 7"-only obscurities and album cuts. it was also gratifying to confirm that most of the records already in my collection that predated my own clubgoing had indeed packed dancefloors and sold in the shops catering to the disco crowd. your dedication to excavating and compiling these charts has helped make RadioioDisco what it is.

    thanks again!

Re: 1976 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

Why thanks Barry!!! :-D I'm such a fan of what you're doing with your radio station--I see so many of those early obscure disco titles in your playlists and am so grateful there is a place where they can, at long last, be heard. Much success to you on your radio venture!!! 8-)8-)8-) There's no place else where you can hear these lost gems mixed in with the more popular disco stuff. It's always a treat to tune in. :-D:-D:-D

Re: 1976 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

OK, here's the companion DISCO COMPILATION CONSENSUS CHART to the Billboard Disco Action Top 30 chart I typed a couple weeks ago...Here I have compiled, in descending point order, every title listed on all 8 charts Billboad printed for the week of 9/04/76. I've eliminated the "bundling" of all titles from a source record, unless the titles have the exact same number of points--in case of point ties...records on more charts get precedence. When they have the same points and the same number of charts, it's in alphabetical order, baby.

    What's It All About, Mar-keeey???

(Is it just for old disco we live???..... well IS it????)

It's a transitional week between the old 6 chart method and the new 16 city charts & a Top 40. Next week, Billboard expands to a Disco Action Top 40. This week half (8) of the charts are printed. Next week, all 16 are printed and we take a few steps back in time!!! [At some point, during September, "Love Hangover" & "Turn The Beat Around" will be back, briefly, I kid you not!!!] :icon_lol: This chart has been 2/3 New York City-centric up til now, and thus, sometimes around a month ahead of the rest of the country with disco discoveries and droppings. Now it will take about a month for the rest of the country to catch up to where NYC was at the end of August-- so we tread water for awhile. Tavares bounces back up the charts and Ja Kki drops!! Doctor Buzzard has yet to be discovered in many places--even San Francisco doesn't chart it til mid-month. :icon_rolleyes:

I'm not clear on how to list the charts...I started doing it the way I did before with A,B,C,D, etc.....but then decided maybe numbering chart #1, 2, 3, 4 would be less confusing...but I can change it... Wait til there are 16 charts!!!...it will get unwieldy to type & to read...but I will try. Any comments would be appreciated now...before I do anymore-- since I can't edit after 3 days now. I typed out the city names on the items with lesser chart mentions, but when there are 16, that will be difficult. I may just do it for items with 3 or less city mentions or something like that. Oh, who knows??? :icon_rolleyes:

    DISCO MIX by TOM MOULTON

    Column #94 / September 4, 1976

NEW YORK - A new album by the Detroit Emeralds will be released this month on the Westbound label. [ note: This is delayed 'til 1977.] It is titled "Feel The Need." The original members of the group have done a remake of their classic disco smash, "Feel The Need In Me." This new version is 7:03 minutes long, and has a long instrumental break as well as a strong instrumental introduction. It is pretty much in the same vein as the original but the tempo is faster. According to Jimmy Stuard, deejay at 12 West, the record is "flawless." [Absolutely flawless and "A Tom Moulton Mix" to boot!!!]

The new Temptations album, "Do The Temptations," on Gordy Records, has one strong disco cut that is getting immediate reaction. The tune is "How Are You (And What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life)." The group is back into its tight harmony sound. It is a strong track and promises success.

Motown has also released Tata Vega's album titled "Full Speed Ahead." There are two strong cuts. The title tune is the stronger; it is very funky and the vocal sound is extremely strong. There is also a good rhythm break that brings the song to a nice peak.
"Love is All You Need" is similar to "Full Speed Ahead," but is not as strong.

Tamla will release its strongest disco album of the year in Septmember. It is the new Eddie Kendricks LP, "Goin' Up In Smoke." All the cuts are uptempo with the exception of one ballad. The LP was recorded in Philadelphia, and was produced by the [Norman] Harris Machine. No release date has been set for Jermaine Jackson's LP titled "Do Unto Others," which was also produced by the Harris Machine. Most New York deejays are aware of this strong album just by word of mouth.

Polydor (Canada) has released the new Soul Iberica Band's single "African Song." It is a nice, melodic instrumental with a French disco sound.

The new Quickest Way Out LP "Beginners Luck" [rhessel informs me the title is actually "Flashlight"--thanks!] will be released this month on Philly Groove Records (distributed by Warner Bros.). There are five disco cuts on the album including the group's current release "Who Am I." [ A wonderful record that sadly never charts here!!!] The album contains the disco version of this tune. "I Can Be Everything You Want Me To Be," and "Beware, She Was Pulling My Heart Strings," are the two strongest cuts. Both have excellent breaks as well as that solid Philadelphia sound.

Beam Junction is rush releasing the new Grace Jones single, "That's The Trouble" in both short and long disco versions. The sound starts off similar to "Extra, Extra", then goes into an "Ob La Di, Ob La Da" type rhythm.
Jones' voice has a lot of Shirley Bassey qualities, and when she sings in the lower register, it is very sultry. The song has a beautiful melodic break in which the guitar plays a pretty rhythm. The record will be available on both 12-inch and regular 7-inch singles. [Another "Tom Moulton Mix"]

OK, now let's check to see where the recently charted items rank in the DISC-O-LA FORTUNE 500 ......

[first posted in the 3/26/76 column]

The rarefied air of the important CLASSIC records on the chart this week led me to take a look at their positions on the Disco-o-la Fortune 500 Discotheque Songs of the 70s list compiled by Ed Rothschild (with assistance from Johnny Tripp and Chipper McKearnin), that appears in its entirety in the back of Mel Cheren's book, Keep On Dancin': My Life and the Paradise Garage (2000); (Supposedly, this list came to fruition sometime in the Eighties; I don't know the specifics. The list goes back as early as the late Sixties for a few titles and then culls some from the early Seventies and stops at the end of 1979--no records from the Eighties are included--a few charted in 1980--but were actually released in late 1979)

    DISC-O-LA FORTUNE 500 Rankings:
(Based on items in this weeks chart): 25 charting positions featuring 30 titles

Is Tom talking about the Flashlight album? I think so. But nowhere in the text he says the name of the performer.

This part of your review is significant because it helps us flush out those under the radar regional songs . These are the 15 titles that are not on the official Billboard Top 30 but make it onto your Consensus charts because certain songs have longer legs in certain locations .... or they are debuts with not enough point clout to break the Top 30 .

This week those of the latter type are:

    24) * MIGHTY POWER OF LOVE - Tavares (Chi)
    27) * THIS SONG WILL LAST FOREVER - Lou Rawls (Miami)
    49) * A LITTLE FUNK DANCE - The Fatback Band (SF) SF loves its Fatback :icon_cool:
    50) * DAZZ - Brick (Atlanta)
    51) * THIS MASQUERADE - George Benson (Atlanta)
    52) * I THINK THE WORLD ABOUT YOU - The Commodores (Bost)

Anyone just reading Billboard's National Top 30 would not realize those songs....

    **********

New charts and new headhurts .... and don't worry about it Marky if you can't be bothered ...... ....but how do the Top Thirty Billboard charting songs , plus the additional 15 that are only on the Consensus chart , add up to ( instead of 45 ) .... 52 titles ?
I know .......it's got something to do with .... title bundling/ not bundling !! :icon_razz::icon_razz:

    **********

A bit back I posed this question :

For the past three weeks  .... the chart has been sorely suffering from the absence of an until now consistent chart contributor of terrific disco tunes . In fact , prior to now , it was for one week only ( and that one was kind of a fluke ) since your charts' inception back in '74 that this source has not been represented . So this is the first time in the charts' 22 month history that this contributor has gone this unrepresented .
I hope this current dry spell ends soon !!
    ?????
Well the dry spell this week is over .......... ( sort of )

At the end of July, Motown did a mass exodus off the chart when David Ruffin, The Commodores and The Magic Disco Machine all left that same week . But now five weeks later , The Commodores are back .... putting Motown back on the chart .... But does it really count as ending a dry spell when Motown is back only because of a re-entry of an already charted release ? :icon_rolleyes:

    52) (R) LET'S GET STARTED/ *I THINK THE WORLD ABOUT YOU - The Commodores
    (Motown LP) (1 point/ 1 chart = Boston)
    5 weeks on the chart/ RETURN (Last charted 7/31/76 @ #23)/ * DEBUT

Looks like even Tom Moulton had become a bit concerned because his column this week is heavily laden with the mentions of upcoming Motown material.
Not to worry ... more Motown due shortly ... :icon_cool:......

    ***********

Good job Marky ..... lots for you to sort thru to come up with this ... isn't there ....

Re: 1976 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

So remicks the answer to your question was that Motown had been on every chart until July??? Really???

THE ORIGINALs debut DOWN TO LOVE TOWN this week...Joel Whitburn shows the label as SOUL in his chart books, a Motown subsidiary--but the actual 12"-ers (promo + commercial) in Bernie's vault are on Motown proper...anyone know why??? Was it re-released on Motown later???

So now you'd like me to make a list of all the titles on the DCC not on the Billboard Top 30-40 list??? Is that what you want now??? Can't I just list the chart numbers??? This will become a VERY LONG LIST starting next week...BLAME CANADA!!! for starters!!!:icon_rolleyes::icon_razz:

Yes .. except one period when Motown was barely hanging on and only because of various Temptations cuts .... and during one of those weeks they failed to get a report .....

THE ORIGINALs debut DOWN TO LOVE TOWN this week...Joel Whitburn shows the label as SOUL in his chart books, a Motown subsidiary--
Ah yes ..... then the drought is definately over .... Commodores or not !!:icon_rolleyes:

That is up to you. But frankly I think you do plenty already . Those that are truly interested can figure it out...just like I did. The little bit of extra work it requires us is good for the brain !! :icon_razz::icon_cool:

In this continuous , never ending , ongoing , seemingly endless conflict in Iraq ..... no I mean in this seemingly endless conflict of what is or isn't disco ..... I wonder if this was ever an issue for Tom Moulton as he aquired all these chart reports from so many regions .

    This weeks entry of :

    51) * THIS MASQUERADE - George Benson
    (Warner LP/ 7") (2 points/ 1 chart = Atlanta)
1 week on the chart/ *DEBUT

    makes me wonder that .....
If someone were reporting something clearly beyond the parameters of disco .... would Tom try to talk them out of reporting it ?..... or just roll his eyes and say
" OK then. That's one vote for THIS MASQUERADE .... good one Atlanta ! :icon_razz: " and then hope by the folllowing week it would just quietly go away ....

This is an odd one, remicks. I guess they musta slow-danced to it. I've pulled it to play so I can see what kinda beat it had....I bpm-ed at around 92 bpm previously...I don't think it lasts more than a week....

It's one that snuck by the dancability review panel somehow ..... it's highly irregular that such a slow song makes it on ... even at the lowest of chart levels ... didn't something slow by Earth Wind and Fire make it too .... in '75 ?? *

    *
or ..... I might have been thinking of :

    437) SWEET LOVE - The Commodores
    (Motown) E= 2; Total points = 2
1 week on the chart (11/8/75); Peak: #46

Hey .....one other thing this week to mention !!! Big news !
It took him until now ...... chart #98 !! ...........but this week the self professed "original disco man" makes his DEBUT ... his first appearance ever .... on the disco charts :

THE DISCO COMPILATION CONSENSUS TOP 50 + 3

    Chart #98 (volume 2: #36 ): September 4, 1976

    37) * GET UP OFFA THAT THING - James Brown
    (Polydor 7") (8 points/ 2 charts #3-6 = Bost/ Miami)
1 week on the chart/ *DEBUt

    !! Welcome to disco JB ! Congrats !! :icon_biggrin: ...... It's about time !! :icon_razz: :icon_razz: :icon_razz: :icon_rolleyes: :icon_cool:
