Oh and it's allright and it's comin' on....
It's time to
GET RIGHT BACK TO WHERE WE STARTED FROM!!!!
Ok, after the neverending year-end wrap up to 1975 that seemed to rival the combined time of the farewell tours of Cher, Judy Garland and The Judds!!!!
.... it's time to start the next the next phase.![]()
For newbies to this site, the charts from 10/26/74 (the FIRST) through 12/27/75 are contained in another thread in this section.
The last chart (12/27/75) was typed on April 17, 2005 and since then it's taken 4 months to type an additonal 9 pages of recaps, trivia and year-end countdowns, culminating in the entire 461 titles that charted on the Billboard Disco charts from 10/26/74 - 12/27/75. I was exhausted and, to tell the truth, still am...however, I'm gonna continue...but-- I can't promise a new chart every week--.... we'll see. :-?
OK that's my intro. Now let the typing begin!!!!!

What's It All About, Mar-keeey???
Well, it's the week after Christmas, 1975. The chart is rather stagnant and will remain so for another week. Then new product starts flowing and it gets interesting.
B strangely has not charted MIGHTY HIGH this week. E is charting a different Mighty Clouds of Joy title...so ostensibly the hottest record -- #1 in NYC clubs...only merits a #7 placement here. It gets better next week...but MIGHTY HIGH is another record that is getting shafted by odd charting reportage.
The Top 10 rearranges itself and adds only ELUSIVE at #10; BABY FACE drops out of the top 10.
Longest charting record is Donna Summer's LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY still being charted on E.
Next week the Billboard Top 50 for 1975 is published squeezing the 6 charts down to 9 items apiece (apparently, 10 wouldn't fit!!!) so we get 6 Top 9's!!! --greatly reducing the titles down to only a mere 23!!!! The following week we're up to 51 titles!!! That's a whole lottta typin'!!!!!

CLUB DIALOG by Tom Moulton
Column #63; January 3. 1976
(NEW YORK) Without a doubt, the music of Philadelphia is the strongest influence on the disco market these days. A quick glimpse : The O'Jay's with their recent No. 1 disco audience response record in "I LOVE MUSIC" (PIR); the Mighty Clouds of Joy's current No. 1 disco record "MIGHTY HIGH" (ABC). which was mixed at Sigma Sound; Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, the Salsoul Orchestra and Archie Bell & the Drells all with songs on the disco listing; and Billy Paul and Dee Dee Sharp both with records fast gaining acceptance at the club level. Indications are, too, that the city's musical influence is going to continue well through 1976.
A new City Limits LP is coming, as well as one from Eddie Kendricks, produced by (Norman) Harris Machine. The album has seven strong disco cuts, including "ON MY WAY" and "ALL MY LOVE," both very melodic and uptempo; "IT'S NOT WHAT YOU GOT," (4:09) in length and with a good rhythm break; "HE'S A FRIEND" and "CHAINS," uptempo and pop oriented; I WON'T TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER," Motownish; and GET IT WHILE IT'S HOT, featuring the Hustle sound. Overall, the album stacks up as one of the strongest commercial efforts from Kendricks (says "Hendricks") :P to date, and one wouldn't be surprised if it agured a quick return to the studios for more of the same.
Buddah, reportedly, is getting heavily into the disco flow, especially with its new 12-inch disco disk. The label is rush-releasing "MERRY-GO-ROUND" by Philadelphia's Monday After this week, while next week Andrea True's "MORE, MORE, MORE" is scheduled to ship.![]()
The latter disk has quite a different sound in that it has more of an import feel (from France or Germany, say) than what you'd expect. The sides were cut in Jamaica, and their strong sensuality should have strong appeal to spinners.
The Southern California DJ Assn. is gathering steam and, for those interested, contact can be made with the group through Jane Benton at 8265 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, 90069. The phone number there is (213) 650-8905.

Great work Mark! This is such
good info.I have to admit there were a few "headscratchers"(Will you
love me tomorrow)but also
some nice "oh YEAH!s(Cate
Bros)I have a question for
you-I had high hopes for the
Joel Whitburn book- found
it useful,but ultimately
confusing with info left out.
My favorite part of Billboards
Disco charts were the page
of regional charts they used
to do(was it up to 16?)Record
World did this also with 4
individual charts, but these were from specific clubs/DJ's
Is there a source on the internet where I can find these regional club play charts in order by dates?
Thanks for all your hard work
Mark! Thom
Hey thommy,
I don't think the regional Billboard city charts are printed anywhere on the net. :-? The problem with the Whitburn book's inability to sythesize the early Billboard charts into a cohesive whole led me to this project. I too was disappointed at all the titles left out of his book; however I understand the problem with the way the info was reported. Each chart had it's own personality and flaws--which I've tried to reflect here --especially in my year-end wrapup of each chart's top titles back on the other thread.
In September of 1976, the 16 city charts are published along with one master "national" Top 30-40...(then expands to more later.) I'm in a quandry as to how to continue this when that happens--but I may do so. It's just the sheer volume of info--16 individual charts with 15 items apiece!!! That's a whole lotta info to compile!!! I've thought about just picking 6 city charts to keep it consistent with the first 8 months of the year--so I could do a year-end wrap-up again. That's probably what I'll do...but I haven't gotten that far yet. I'm only up to April and Miss Ross is vying for number 1 with Miss Summer!!! Now that's a great time in disco history with Vicki Sue Robinson, Andrea True, Melba Moore, Ecstasy, Passion & Pain and the Trammps all vying with Miss Ross & Miss Summer for the top spot on the charts!!! Stay tuned.![]()

4 records on 4 charts
1 record on 3 charts
5 records on 2 charts
8 records on only 1 chart
What's It All About, Mar-keeey???
(Is it just for old disco we live???.......well is it???)
It's a truncated ( that means shortened) :P chart due to space limitations this week...so it's hard to really analyze. But, I'll try. First off Mighty High finally gets it's #1 ranking due to the 6 charts finally aligning in it's favor for the first and last time. Like Fly, Robin, Fly and Love To Love you Baby before it, it will be robbed of a long run at #1 due to odd chart reporting. Next week chart B drops it again.....
For the first time, by fluke, we have a #2 record by the same artist as the #1. Mighty Clouds of Joy's Everything Is Love is bundled with Mighty High on all the NYC charts, so it moves up for one week in the Top 10...down to #11 again next week!!! Also, LA has started charting Mighty High bundled along with another LP cut Standing On The Real Side-- which it actually lists first.
B & C bring back I Love Music so it moves back up from # 8 last week to #4. D drops it this week.
D also drops Biddu Orchestra; C drops Penny McLean; and in a very strange occurrence A drops Salsoul Orchestra while it is still charting on all 3 NYC retailers!!! A always hangs onto the hits longer than the retailers--but not this time!!! (Well, actually, it probably just ranked lower than #9....)
Next week we get the full 6 charts with 15 items apiece--the wild card this time is that the 6th guest city chart is from San Juan, Puerto Rico and they are several months behind NYC so a slew of titles that have been dropped return again for one more week!!!!
Next week we have a total of 51 items (15 debuts + 15 returns)
Among the artists debuting new titles are Atlanta Disco Band, The Disco Sound of Andre Gagnon, Isaac Hayes Movement, Linda G. Thompson (another Silver Convention vocalist hoping for a solo hit), Hamilton Bohannon, Donny Beaumont, Ramsey Lewis, Black Blood, Genya Ravan, David Bowie, Blanche Carter, Love Unlimited Orchestra, Frankie Avalon (!!!) and a masterpiece by the Andrea True Connection which gets a #13 ranking on chart A.

No Moulton chart this week according to my source shootyourshot--who actually goes to a library and makes copies of the microfilm columns to get that info--because they are now usually printed on a different page than the charts.

Final note:
Last week I listened to "Found At Last: Lost Disco from 1975" --made especially for me by Remicks with titles from the 1975 charts I didn't have!!!! &
"The Cleethorpes Story" -Brit cd with some gems.
On the "Found At Last" cd I'd requested "Elusive" by Babe Ruth --ironically the liner notes to "The Cleethorpes Story" (this was a club in Britain--"The Pier" Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire...) have a "P.S. On a second listen we had to exclude "Elusive"- Babe Ruth due to it being so horrible!!"
Strange coincidence. :D
Today I listened to various discs in The Best Disco In Town, Volume 2 & 3 series on Hippo Records
January 17, 1976

5) FOX ON THE RUN - Sweet
Billboard Soul/R&B Chart #1:

Disco Action
Record World "National Disco File Top 20" #1: MIGHTY HIGH (week #1); (This is the chart being used by Joel Whitburn in his book for this time period--you know, the one chart versus 5 or 6, sometimes 7-- chart thang.)
But I've resolved that issue by combining the 6 Billboard charts into one.
New Rule: from now on there will be a constant 6 charts published each week through the end of August, 1976--when a national chart takes the place of this format. 3 NYC retailers and 3 audience response charts from NYC, LA/San Diego and a guest city will be printed each week.
Billboard charts:
A= Top 15 Audience Response Records in NYC Discos
(#1= MIGHTY HIGH/ EVERYTHING IS LOVE) (3rd week)
B= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Downstairs Records (NYC)
(#1= SPANISH HUSTLE) (1st week)
C= Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Colony Records (NYC)
(#1= SPANISH HUSTLE) (1st week)
D=Top 15 Retail Best Sellers: Melody Song Shops (Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island)
#1= I FEEL A GROOVE COMIN' ON) (1st week)
E= Top 15 Audience Response Records in LA/ San Diego Discos:
(#1= DO WHAT YOU FEEL) (1st week)
F= Special Guest City Chart: Top 15 Audience Response Records in San Juan, Puerto Rico Discos:
#1 = I LOVE MUSIC) (1st reported week)
6 charts with 15 items apiece; 15 points for a #1; 1 point for a #15; 90 maximum points. Add them up and voila!....

What's It All About, Mar-keeey???
(Is it just for old disco we live???.......well is it???)
(Yes-- and "The Daily Show" with Jon Stewart--...) :P
It's a compromise week. The obvious #1 on chart A & Record World is MIGHTY HIGH. But retailer B has dropped it and guest city chart F hasn't charted it...so it's down to #4 (43 points) here after only one week @ #1 (79 points last week).
Soooooooo....we get as the new #1: EXTRA, EXTRA (REad All About It) by virtue of being the record charted on the most charts--5 (with only 58 out of a possible 90 points). No records charted all 6 charts this week due to the use of the San Juan Chart--which is kinda dated in it's listings.
EXTRA, EXTRA... individually rates:
A= #3; B= #7; C= #4; D= #4; E= #4; F= n/c
This is Ralph Carter's second big hit---last summer he peaked at #3 here with his remake of WHEN YOU'RE YOUNG AND IN LOVE; that record topped the NYC A list chart--but couldn't rise above #3 on the DCC cause LA chart E didn't list it. This time around LA is giving Ralphie some chart action.
The other big news is the RETURN of Fatback Band's SPANISH HUSTLE up to #5!!! (topping both chart B & C and placing # 6 on D). Next week chart A picks up on the trend and ranks it #14.
The Top 10 rearranges itself, adding only SPANISH HUSTLE and SMILE and dropping Salsoul Orchestra, EVERYTHING IS LOVE and unbundling I COULD HAVE DANCED ALL NIGHT (from JUMP FOR JOY).
Longest running chart record is still Donna Summer with 16 weeks.
Movin" On Up: Biggest Mover:
SPANISH HUSTLE (returns to chart at #5 from #38 ranking 2 weeks ago on 1/04/76.
I'm Goin' Down: Biggest Drops:
I AM SOMEBODY -30 points--- from #20 down to #50
ELUSIVE -26 points-- from #23 down to #49
MORE, MORE, MORE is the most notable debut. It will be an absolute smash here. This is a truly terrific record that is one of my personal alltime faves. I bought the LP when it first came out and this has just one of the best "morning tempo" (around 106 bpm) grooves ever made. The "Tom Moulton mix" with the exuberant percussion and prominent woodblock is simply made to make yer feet wanna dance. :D :D :D
Next week: 43 items chart with 7 debuts, 2 returns and 19 dropoffs (the San Juan-only titles obviously and others in the lower regions of this weeks chart)
New titles from Brass Construction, Milton Hamilton, Joe Thomas, George McCrae, Mandrill, Hudson County and Eddie Kendricks are charted. A couple items that dropped out of the Top 10 this week move back up and the Top 10 rearranges itself--adding no new titles. Andrea True leaps up to #18.

I don't have a Tom Moulton chart for this week--I do have one for next week....If I find this week's, I'll add it later. Paging shootyourshot......![]()
CLUB DIALOG by Tom Moulton
Jamuary 17, 1976/ Column #64
(Thanks to shootyourshot for this column!!!!)
"Chef's Salad (The Sound Of Boston From Studio B)", an LP from Boston-based Cooking Records, has a strong disco cut in "The Sound Of Boston". The song features the sound of synthesizers and a good, happy beat. Overall, the album is a fine effort from the group The Gang Band and other local artists. A solid production job by Wayne Wadhams handles the musical diversity well.
Richie Pampanella, DJ at the Hippopotamus here, reports strong audience response to Carl Graves' "Heart Be Still" single on A&M.
UA has just released the Brass Construction album, and there are two strong disco cuts on it in "Movin'" and "Changin'". Both cuts are over eight minutes in length, and producer Jeff Lane has managed to capture his B.T. Express sound on both.
John Hodges, better known as Johnny Disco, is now spinning at San Francisco's City Club. For the past two years he worked the Mine Shaft.
Thanks to Oscar Rodriguez and Victor Ocasio for helping to compile this week's Puerto Rico listing. Both are DJs at the popular Abbey there.
Relic Rack, a Hackensack N.J. retailer, has become one of the top stores catering to local disco tastes. Like Downstairs Records here, Relic Rack was previously involved mainly with oldie product. The past year, though, has seen its disco involvement grow to the point where inventory includes a wide selection of imported as well as domestic dance disks.
The new First Choice album is now scheduled to ship sometime next month. The LP will be followed by a single release. . . . Available at the end of this month will be an album from Wing & A Prayer Fife & Drum Corps. It features an incredible "Al Jolson Medley". :P ![]()
Atlantic will also be releasing the "Lady Bump" album by Penny McLean.

Today I typed while listening to "remicks' "
Found at Last!!!--Lost Disco from 1975
featuring Calhoon, Ronnie Walker, Invitations, Ron Butler & the Ramblers, Consumer Rapport, Babe Ruth, Jimmy Castor Bunch, South Shore Commission, Juggy Murray Jones ("Hava Nagila" anyone???), Linda Lewis, Philly Devotions, Dooley Silverspoon, Eddie Drennon, Yambu and the Armada Orchestra.
Now it's Disco Boogie - Volume 1--the classic Salsoul mixed job on Right Stuff.
*****
That's quite a surprise #1 Marky !! :P :)
A weaker reworking of the sound on "WHEN YOU'RE YOUNG AND IN LOVE " ..which I think was deserving of it's chart topping ( #3) .... it seems this one squeeked up there by its reasonably good performance on the most charts ...and 58 out of 90 points is not much of a smash .....it does make one pause to think though ... over the years on the Billboard chart ..how many songs scored just a thread better than another to rank at #1 ...while others were probably huge points ahead of the nearest contender ... wouldn't it be interesting to be able to review that data .....??
Maybe part of "EXTRA'S" success is ........... its pressing on those new fangled DJ copy 12" ers ...........
"SPANISH HUSTLE" 's incredible rebirth ... haven't seen anything like that before here on your charts either .................
ALSO ... thank you for now listing the week's debuts at the bottom of your run-down ..... :) 8) :) extra typing on your part ... but easier to review....
*****
hey remicks,
Yeah, I was gonna do a tease about the next number one last week--but I forgot.   Cause based on the 1/10/76 chart, Ralph Carter @ #9 didn't seem like an obvious candidate for #1. He will retain the #1 position next week also--and will be #2 on chart A...so it's not so much of a stretch of the imagination, although I checked Record World last night and "Extra, Extra" didn't even chart Top 10 there (I think it peaked at #13...or something like that). It's pleasant bubble gum/pop disco--but not a classic in my book.
"Spanish Hustle" was mentioned in the lower parts of the sales charts a couple times...then we had the Top 9 week and it disappeared...so it's return to #5 probably wouldn't have been such a surprise if we'd had the complete data for the 1/10/76 chart. This record is gonna go to the top also--am I givin' too much away????
And, as for the debut recap...I figured that might be helpful to the readers as well as myself...cause these records come and go and come back again so often it's nice to have a definitive place to check out the actual debut date. When I did the year-end wrapup I made several pages for the same records and didn't realize the duplications until I started typing. It's hard to remember if it is actually a totally new title or if it slipped on and off a month earlier and is back for another go round. But this time, I'm doing the year-end recap stuff as I type each week--so all I'll have to do is add the columns up when we get to the end of the year....![]()
OK, I'm gonna add this stuff to the January 17, 1976 listing.
Wasn't sure if I should continue typing this stuff...but what the hey....  :-?

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:
(Reviews from the 1979 edition of the Rolling Stone Record Guide, edited by Dave Marsh...)
THE CATE BROTHERS (return @ #32)
"Pulsating Memphis-style blue-eyed soul produced by Steve Cropper. Brothers Ernie and Earl Cate perform original material in the tradition of Sam and Dave. Their first album, Cate Brothers ***, contains their best songs, "Time For Us" and the hit, "Union Man." " SH = Stephen Holden
(I found a used copy of this at Amoeba a few week's back. Only listened to "Union Man" so far)
BLACK BLOOD (debuts @ #40)
"Eccentric black rhythm group had a minor 1975 R&B hit "A.I.E (A Mwana)," for Mainstream." DM = Dave Marsh
GENYA RAVAN (debuts @ #42)
"As Goldie of Goldie and the Gingerbreads, Genya Ravan toured with the early Rolling Stones; later she led an abominable horn band, Ten Wheel Drive. But in the late Seventies, she became enamored of New Wave rock and after producing the Dead Boys debut LP, made this heavy-breathing affair on her own. ("Urban Desire" ***)
It's more notable for street smarts, than anything approaching melody, but it's tough enough to get by--with a little help from such pals as Lou Reed.
(DM = Dave Marsh)
(This LP came later than the "Feel The Need In Me" charting this week. Question: is this a remake of the Detroit Emeralds record???)
ANDREA TRUE CONNECTION (debuts @ #43)
"Former porno starlet actually came up with a hit disco single, "More, More, More," for Buddah, but the rest of these ("Steppin' Out" (*)/ "White Witch" (*)) are pretty mediocre no matter how you like to do the do."
(DM= Dave Marsh)
FRANKIE AVALON (debuts the disco remake of his early Sixties hit "Venus" @ #52)
"Perhaps some of the most patronizing music ever made is gathered here. ( "16 Greatest Hits") Far from being a phony successor to the golden age of Fifties rock 'n' roll, Avalon was a descendent of older pop stars like Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. The pseudo-swing of "Swingin' On a Rainbow" is closer to the awesome vapidity of Avalon's usual Christmas-chimes-and-drip-dry-orchestra sound than is the pseudo-rock of "Two Fools." It makes sense that Nashville first started to exert a strong pull on the mass audience around the time "Venus" was popular." (BT = ??)

+7 debuts + 2 returns/ -19 dropoffs
1 record on all 6 charts (Ralph Carter, hence he's #1!!!) :wink

3 records on 3 charts

What's It All About, Mar-keeey???
(Is it just for old disco we live???.......well is it???)
(Yes-- and "The Daily Show" with Jon Stewart--...)
It's a "middling" transitional week from the fading hits released in 1975 to the soon-to-be bonafide 1976 hits. The first of the latter, MORE, MORE, MORE leaps up from it's debut at #43 last week to #18 this week.
Out of a total of 90 maximum points, our #1 has only 60--a fair number but more of a compromise choice than an out & out smash. I've just completed a chart for May, 1976 where the #1 record has 86 out of 90 points!!! (You'll just have to wait and see what it is.) :P
EXTRA, EXTRA (Read All About It) rankings:
A=#2; B=#14; C=#3; D=#6; E=#10; F=#1
Ralph Carter claims #1 for second week by virtue of being the only record charted on all 6 charts. The closest contender, MIGHTY HIGH@ #2 with 56 points still tops the Billboard chart A and the national Record World chart--but chart B has dropped it, so it's stuck at #2 here.
SPANISH HUSTLE is charted on all 4 NYC charts - topping chart C for the second week. Next week, we'll see the power that the 3 NYC retail charts (B-C-D--"the Heatseekers") hold over this compilation consensus chart. They're ususally the first to chart records and the first to dump them. They can propel titles to the top here several weeks before they'd top the more conservative chart A and they can keep a record form retaining it's reign at the top of the charts as soon as they decide it's not "hot"anymore.
Of the debuts, Brass Construction's MOVIN' ON @ #23 has the greatest future. Eddie Kendricks gets one point for HE'S A FRIEND-- a track off an LP that has at least 3 other titles that will chart quite nicely here.
The Top 10 readmits 2 titles that slipped out of the Top 10 last week, records by the Salsoul & Biddu Orchestras. The O'Jays and Simon Said drop out of this week's Top 10--but the O'Jays bounce back next week--can't keep 'em down!!!
19 titles drop off after last weeks infusion of dated titles from the San Juan, Puerto Rico chart, so we drop from 51 items down to 43--note that half the chart--22 items are charting on only 1 chart.)
Next week: a new #1; 2 items move into the top 10 (one an up & comer and the other a return);14 records debut by these artists: Jeff Evans (another standard done up disco-style), Hamilton Bohannon (a 2nd title in addition to "Bohannon's Beat"), Charlie Callelo, Monday After, Rhythm Makers, Poison, BCG, Hidden Strength, and 2 new titles apiece for Eddie Drennon & Brass Construction.

Artist Spotlight
(Reviews from the 1979 edition of the Rolling Stone Record Guide, edited by Dave Marsh...)
BRASS CONSTRUCTION (debuts @ #23)
"Their first album (Brass Construction (****)
(1975)[/includes the hit "Movin' " and five other one-word titles of disco length and style. Their music is accented by misconstrued images of urban origin.
II(**) is something of a departure; the vocals are more upfront, standardized in the Ohio Players fashion. III (**) and IV (**) continue in this vein. And speaking of fashion, Brass Construction is one of the few black groups who made it big in 1975 without listing the astrological signs of its band members." (GC = Georgia Christgau)

CLUB DIALOG by Tom Moulton
Column #65; January 24,1976
[Note: last week's missing Moulton column was sent to me today by shootyourshot...so I'll add that.)![]()
(NEW YORK) The new Esther Phillips LP ships in two weeks. The title cut, "FOR ALL WE KNOW," comes out as a single this week, though. The album has seven cuts and they're all disco directed. "CARAVAN" and "GOIN' OUT OF MY HEAD" are the two strongest, while close behind are "UNFORGETTABLE," "FEVER, "and "PURE PERFECT LOVE." Another cut, "FOOLS RUSH IN" is similar to WHAT A DIFF'RENCE A DAY MAKES."
RCA has released "HEAVEN'S HERE ON EARTH" by Hudson County. The record is primarily an instrumental, but does have some vocals. The group sounds a lot like MFSB.
Bob Crewe, crowned King of the Discos last week by the Southern California Disco DJ Association, is hosting a party here at the Record Pool Thursday (22) from 6-9 pm. Crewe is in town for the Billboard Disco Forum, and wants to meet many of the local spinners on a one-to-one basis. All local players and anyone attending the convention are invited to the party.
While in town, Crewe will also be introducing the BCG's new "STREET TALK" single (20th Century). Word is that attempts are being made to have test pressings to give to all the spinners coming to the fete.
The song is medium tempo and, while mostly instrumental, does have vocal tracks. The LP version will run 9:22 and will be used on one side of a 12-inch pressing, while a long (6:08.) and short (4:22) single version will be used on the flip side.
This move marks the first time that both LP and single versions are included on the same 12-incher. The disk will also be serviced to radio stations.
Boston DJs and Nightfall magazine are presenting their best 1975 disco picks at the Mirage disco there Sunday (25) from 9pm to 2am. Among the categories are:
BEST LP: "SILVER CONVENTION"
BEST SINGLE: "DREAMING A DREAM"
BEST DISCO ACT: THE TRAMMPS
BEST MALE DISCO ACT: FRANKIE VALLI
BEST FEMALE DISCO ACT: GLORIA GAYNOR
UA has just released "SHACK UP",a single by Banbarra. The group is out of Washington, D.C. As for the disk, it has a rhythm track which is similar to the Temps' "SHAKEY GROUND." A strong rhythm break is just one of the ingredients that go into making it a strong record.
Atlantic is rush-releasing Herbie Mann's bicentennial single offering in "STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER."
Groove Merchant has released the new Joe Thomas "MASADA" LP. It's a very strong album with the title cut leading the way. Next in line come the cuts "GEMINI FLYIN' " and "POINCIANA." The sound is very mellow/melodic and is in the same vein as "LET'S DO THE LATIN HUSTLE."
"COLLAGE" is the name of the Eddie Drennon & B.B. S. Unlimited album on the Friends & Co. label. The LP features their hit song "LET'S DO THE LATIN HUSTLE" and a number of other cuts that have that same moody, lush, delicate sound.

and a new 3-cd set I found at Amoeba last Saturday from the Netherlands titled DISCO XPLOSION. I'll post the track listings later after I get the timings (not listed)--but this has a whole lotta obscure and juicy good stuff on it and it was cheap!!! ($15.98 for 3 cds!!!)

BTW: It'll be interesting to see if a certain (New York) track from the Disco Xplosion CD gets the Marky thumbs up.
Q,
I added SHACK UP to the "coming attractions" marquee!!!![]()
LA charts this record; NYC igs it. So what's new, eh?
Now I got through the first 2 cds of the Disco Xplosion series last night. It's a lotta T.K., Roulette, UA, Capitol, and that Patrick Adams/Peter Brown stuff.
I'm not sure which title you're referring to--one of the P&P titles, I'd guess....(??) It's a very good deal with long versions of Whirlwind's "FULL TIME THING" and some Jimmy "Bo" Horne and Lotsa obscure titles that I mostly liked.....
Has this been discussed here before??? Cause I musta been absent that day. :-?![]()
Marky: Don't wanna ruin this thread so I'll be brief.

What's It All About, Mar-keeey???
(Is it just for old disco we live???.......well is it???)
SUR-PRISE, SUR-PRISE...we got us a new #1 and it's only charting on 4, count em, 4 charts!!! The power of the 3 NYC retail charts ranking SPANISH HUSTLE @ #1 and an aditional 5 points from chart A gives it the highest point count (a mere 50) this week.
A= #11; B= #1; C= #1; D= #1; E= n/c; F= n/c
This is a rarity....but it's a fun fluke, nonetheless.![]()
MORE, MORE, MORE jumps into the top 10 @ #9 for it's 3rd week on the chart (#43 to #18 to #9). Can #1 be next??? :-?
The highest debut is I'LL BE SEEING YOU @ #15; another old "standard" from 1925 done up in a disco style. All 3 NYC retailers chart this (B= #9; C= #8; D= #11); next week it's here again and then "poof" it's gone....this seems to be the pattern with the "blame it on "BRAZIL" syndrome" of retooling old "standards" from the Twenties, Thirties, Forties, Fifties into disco records. The trend has peaked (regardless of what Moulton says in his column for this week!!!). These records have a audience-- but now after BABY FACE/ TANGERINE, etc, they hit quick and drop really fast. An exception will be John Davis & the Monster Orchestra's reworking of Cole Porter's classic NIGHT & DAY. There are more oldies comin down the pike--but, it's my opinion that this trend has peaked. (In the immortal words of James Brown....."Let's hit it and quit!!!") NEXT!!!!![]()
Of the debuts STREET TALK will be the biggest smash with CHANGIN' gettin' a few chances at the Top 10 also.
Next week, 2 records enter the Top 10 for the first time. 18 records drop off, 6 records return and 10 debut for a total of 53 items. Among the artists debuting are Crystal Grass, Leroy Hutson, Johnny Hammond, Luis Ramirez, Wee Willie & The Winners (!!), Ron Carter, MVM Orchestra, Dezro Orchestra and a new title from Joe Thomas.

Artist Spotlight
(Reviews from the 1979 edition of the Rolling Stone Record Guide, edited by Dave Marsh...)
B.C.G. (Bob Crewe Generation) (debuting @ #52)
"Crewe is one of rock's stranger figures: he first emerged as a member of the Rays (their hit was "Silhouettes") and became most successful as a producer of classic records by Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels and Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Those productions were all frankly evocative of Phil Spector.
Later he turned to disco, scoring a succcess with Disco Tex and His Sex-o-lettes, a breakthrough for the notorious talk-show rocker Monte Rock III. STREET TALK (*) continues the disco groove, but MOTIVATION (**) is a different matter, a vocal album produced by Jerry Wexler and Barry Beckett. Wexler is perhaps the greatest of rock vocal producers, and Crewe's voice isn't bad, but nothing can completely redeem the self-penned material." (DM = Dave Marsh)

DISCO MIX by Tom Moulton (note the new title!!!)
Column #66; actually... February 7, 1976; [I typed it a week early; there was no Moulton column in the 1/31/76 Billboard according to "shootyourshot."]
(Again, thanks to shootyourshot for his library visit to retrieve this column & for mailing it to me!! I did the typing job)![]()
(NEW YORK) It appears as though the thing to do these days is standards and there are certainly a lot of great ones around. Sam, a local New York label, is releasing "NIGHT AND DAY" by the Monster Orchestra.
The tune has a strong similarity to the current favorite, "BABY FACE," and features some great rhythm breaks in the longer version. Vocal sounds on the cut are handled by "Philadelphia's most famous background trio" (Barbara Ingram, Carla & Evette Benson). A number of the "Philly sound" musicians are also featured.
Producer of the cut is John "The Monster" Davis, who also has another production coming soon in "HURT SO BAD" by the Philly Devotions on Columbia. This song shows another side to the group with a whole different sound and lots of percussion instruments and a very strong rhythm break in the longer version.
The Pearls, a well-known English soul group with a sizeable New York following, has finally released its first stateside record "I'LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS"(Private Stock). A number of local DJs had Bell Records imports by the group but this new record stacks up as a breakthrough for the act since it made it into a disco single. It runs 4:20. This will probably be the biggest record to date with its more Americanized sound.
"BYE LOVE" is the new single by 5,000 Volts on Phillips, and it sounds vocally more like the group used to. Rhythm-wise, it's in the Latin-vein, very uptempo.
Wing & A Prayer Fife & Drum Corps'"BABY FACE" LP has just been released and it is commerical disco music, for lack of of a better term. [I can think of a better term!!! CRAP!!!] :P There are two very strong medleys--one "old-fashioned" and the other a "show medley." There's also a very strong version of the Beatles' "ELEANOR RIGBY," which sounds a lot like "PAPA WAS A ROLLIN' STONE." In Addition, the cut "CHARLESTON" has that "EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD" sound. This is a very strong LP that has the hooks that people want to hear again and again. [Check please!!!] :P
The Jon Wite Group has come out with the single "AUTUMN LEAVES" (Cenpro label). The group has added a full orchestra and there are no vocals at all. Because this is a local label with a track record, the group has picked up a very strong following in the New York area. The song times in at an even 6 minutes.
Freddie Mendoza, deejay at Mr. Laughs, is getting a very strong reaction to "CONSIDERATION" by Gail, an orchestra on SMI Records. Several other local deejays have also picked up on the 6:10 song.
The single "LOVE FOR HIRE" by the Richard Hewson Orchestra is being released by Splash Records this week, and with a running time of 2:35, it's probably the shortest disco record made by today's dance standards. It's mostly instrumental, with a few female vocal backing tracks, and the sound is very up. It's understood though that when a disco spinner called the label to find out if there is going to be a longer version of the disk made available, he was told to "play it twice!"
Atlantic has just released two disco goodies in DISCO TREK," which contains several of the label's classic dance tunes, and the new Major Harris "JEALOUSY" album. The "DISCO TREK" LP carries eight cuts, all of which are much longer that the original singles. Among the selections are:
"THIS WORLD" - Sweet Inspirations
"YOU CALL ME BACK" - Clyde Brown
"LOOK ME UP" - Blue Magic
"MAMA NEVER TOLD ME" - Sister Sledge
"GOT TO GET YOU BACK" - Sons Of Robin Stone (Tom always writes 'Robinstone") :-?
& "TIME" by Jackie Moore.
The best dance cuts on the Major Harris disk are "RUBY LEE" and "WALKIN' IN THE FOOTSTEPS." Both have a strong Philadelphia sound.
American Ariola is rush-releasing "DANCE, DANCE, DANCE," not the song by Calhoon, but one by Charlie Calello. The record could carry the subtitle "HAVA NIGELA" [I think "Inside America" has the "Have Nigela" riffs also!!] The commercial copies will be 6:10, while a special 12-inch disco version (the label's first) will be 8:23. The song seems definitely inspired by "BABY FACE," especially with the string lines. There are two good breaks on the record, one with just rhythm and the other with synthesizer and female vocals.
Vincent Montana, Jr., last associated with the production on Salsoul Orchestra, has come up with a new group known as Brown Sugar. The three gal group is on Capitol, and their release "I'M GOING THROUGH CHANGES NOW" is up and mellow. Montana wrote and produced the song.
The new Hank Crawford LP goes a long way to maintain the disco image (and strength) of the Kudu label. The album has five good cuts: "THE STRIPPER" & "I HEAR A SYMPHONY" being the two best, with "MADISON (SPIRIT THE POWER)," "SUGAR FREE" & "I'LL MOVE NO MOUNTAIN" (s/be "Move Me No Mountain") following. The disk is basically a marriage of disco and jazz sounds.
Another good instrumental creating excitement these days is "SALSA DISCO" by Luis Ramirez (Cotique). That MOR sound that a growing number of labels is releasing to pick up "good music" airplay is there, with lush sounding strings and a nice laid-back rhythm for a floating effect. The label has also put this disk on a 12 inch DJ copy.
The Penny McLean "LADY BUMP" LP is now available in Germany on Jupiter, and will be released this week in Canada on Columbia. Atlantic, reportedly, is aiming to release it domestically sometime next month. While the Atlantic disk will have a long version of "LADY BUMP," the Jupiter and Columbia copies will stick with the shorter take. Including the title song, there are nine cuts on the album, with the honors going to "SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES" (6:03) and "DEVIL EYES." The latter song sounds a lot like "SAVE ME" by Silver Convention of which McClean is a member. Overall, the album carries the "LADY BUMP" sound, and if you like Silver Convention, you should turn on to this one.
(Sheesh , Tom was damn chatty today!!!) :P
