Merci pour that video! (excuse my dreadful franglais!). I'm so shocked; I didn't imagine it looking like that. :-? I thought it would look really dark & mysterious & seedy. It looks like a hairdresser's! :o

Most of the clubs I went to were a little tacky on the outside. Inside was usually completely opposite esp. the megabucks club.

You can't judge a book by its cover. The inside was one of the raunchiest and tackiest looking places in NYC, the restroom stank to high heaven! And let's not even mention the "backroom", which was actually the basement of the building!

My most vivid memory of the place was my first visit there. Tripping my nips off and there on the stage a black drag queen (Pepper Fox) in a slip, lip syncing (poorly) to Donna's "Last Dance". Unforgettable.

Nicky wasn't playing there yet when that happened, but once he started working there, well what can I say, Nicky was the DJ to go listen to at the Anvi!

Tacky is being very polite. This is not where you went to sit down and have polite conversation. Either you wanted to dance or you were so horny you couldn't wait until you got home.

I first went there when it still catered to the leather crowd. This was long before I auditioned for a job. I walked out. Too strange for me at the time. Guess I became more jaded as my years in the Village added up. When they got rid of the jukebox and Richie (Rivera) and Larry (Rossiello) were playing there, well, you couldn't keep me out. :D

Believe me, that picture just shows the outside.........the inside was very seedy (even for me)! Did you see the Al Pacino movie "Cruising"? (my guess is yes). Remember the scene where he picked up that guy and took him to a cheap hotel to be ambushed by the cops? That hotel was just on the side of The Anvil. The windows over the canopy were hotel rooms

Was the club used in the movie "Cruising"--The Anvil? That woulda made sense.

Remember Al Pacino "dancin'" up a storm after sniffing the rag with ethyl chloride????

And then there was the ff scene--which gets edited so ya can't really tell...but I could.

No, the Anvil looked different. I'm pretty sure that was the Ramrod, which was just further down on West Street

Bill and I were hanging out that night in The Village when they were filming in front of the Ramrod. Nothing exciting to report --- a few protestors and curious onlookers. Ramrod was part of that small strip of bars on West Street off Christopher, sandwiched on the north end by Peter Rabbit and on the south end by Kellers. I could be mistaken, but I think they filmed outside the Ramrod and inside The Eagle's Nest, or vice-versa. Too many years...

My one time Anvil experience ...

Four of us are on our way to Munich from San Francisco and since we had to change flights in NY anyway .... what the heck.... might as well stay a couple of nights and check out the clubs . We went to The Saint and probably would have been satisfied with being there all night .... but we also wanted to see other places too...
My buddy and I headed for The Anvil ... I guess we wanted to see if it was as outrageous as we'd heard . We walked there from The Saint ..... which I don't know now if distance wise that was a big deal ..... I do remember passing all these loading docks with trucks backed up to these platforms where whole sides of beef and animal carcasses were suspended from giant hooks .

Inside The Anvil .... the main thing I recall was a sizable four sided continuous bar that formed a big square around the bartenders inside of it . There was a thick rope hanging from the center ( maybe several) and a young fellow standing on the bar dressed in only a jock strap , who would occassionally swing from one side of the bar to another . Being naked , save this jock strap, he was swinging around overhead with his ass hanging out and landing with his bare feet onto the counter next to people's drinks that were sitting there .... but the clientele didn't seem to mind at all .... .....He was young and blonde but that was the most he had going for him .... sort of chunky and greasy . Worst of all , he had a cold and was sniffling and coughing as he tarzaned above everyone and their exposed drinks !! :P
I explored some .... going down some twisting stairs into a lower level ... but just checked it out briefly before scrambling back upstairs. I remember liking the music .... and I wish I could remember the dance floor .... but I can't.

Someone told us about some other club nearby so we left to seek it . Don't remember its name either but it was at the end of a short dead-end alley and the guy at the door said we could enter ( $5??) but we had to first take off our pants and check them in upon entering :o !! .... Being innocent Izod polo shirter types , we declined to go in and decided that it was time to call it a night .... :D
