    80s music mags/HI-NRG charts

We all probably remember the great RECORD MIRROR with its various dance/pop/soul/HI-NRG charts but did you buy any others with HI-NRG charts/reviews etc... ?
I remember a magazine called JOCKS that was always up to date with HI-NRG releases and had both the UK & USA hi-nrg charts.

I used to buy R Mirror religiously and keep them all, but me mam chucked em out when they moved house!

Picked up 3 box loads at a carboot for £3 and sold em ebay for £140 :)

But not before i trawled the charts again!

Now advertising at work for some more - 1980-1983

DMA (Dance Music Authority) - a US publication used to have a very large hi energy section full of charts and reviews. Alas they magazine went under about 8 years ago. There was also Streetsounds (from Canada) which was very good. Eurodancehits.com has a high energy chart. Check it out especially if you like current euro music. Most of the songs are not well known in the UK though.

I vaguely recall another mag called STREET SCENE (or possibly) STREET BEAT - I think Levine also wrote for that as well - Apparantly the RECORD MIRROR hi-nrg Charts got scrapped cos "someone" was " rigging" it and putting their own releases near to top all the time...

Sadly the first issue of Record Mirror I ever read was the very one where they announced they'd pulled the Hi-NRG chart! I remember them mentioning that they were pulling it due to accusations it was rigged but I hadn't heard the Levine was the reason. I think I'd also heard there were accusations it was being unfairly slanted towards imported singles because of a shop owner that sold the higher priced imports, was that Levin as well or am I remembering that wrong?

As I recall it did not mention anyone in particular but I do remember that there were accusations of chart fiddling.

Neil, it didn't take much working out to know who they were talking about!

Record Shack, then Nightmare appeared so often it was laughable. (Especially when the stuff on Nightmare, was just that!) ;)

    Re: 80s music mags/HI-NRG charts

I remember the Scottish Dance chart very well in Record Mirror...and nine times out of ten the majority of the chart would be Hi-NRG.

As for the Hi-NRG chart that was in Record Mirror...it was quite obvious that something strange was going on,when you would have 6 or 7 of the top 10 being Nightmare or Record Shack, instead of the more popular tracks that were around.

It was a real shame it had to end, because at the time it was probably the most popular way of finding out what was going on in the Hi-NRG world.

I'm considering scanning one or two hi-NRG charts from Record Mirror. Would people here be interested? If so, which date do you think would be a good starting point?

While on the subject of Record Mirror, I have a near complete set of 80s/90s issues apart from the following. These are the ones I'm missing (just thought I'd mention it incase anyone can help!)................

I would be very interested in seeing scans of the Record Mirror Hi-NRG charts. How about one from the early 80s and one from the late 80s?

1982 or 1980 would be a good year to start with.

I remember a U.S. HI NRG / Dance magazine very well. I subscribed to it in the eighties, but can't remember the name of the magazine. It was in black and white, the title of the magazine had the word "Dance" in it, and I believe it was a bi-weekly pub. This all happened such a long time ago (age showing)!

Dance Music Report? It did have a Hi-NRG/Eurobeat column, first edited by Casey Jones then Dean Ferguson.

Okay, I'll scan one or two in the next few days. I'll be interested in hear people's opinions of the tracks I've not heard.

Energyguy....I have every issue of Jocks. It was a sister publication of Record Mirror aimed at mobile DJ's ("jocks") and as such, had quite a small print run. Took me ages to track them down. Send me a private message and I'll try help you with what you want.

Yes, exactly. That's (was) the name of the magazine. Does it still exist?
It had great reviews and I used this mag & the reviews as a guideline for many maxi-single purchases. I was never disappointed.

I remember getting the very 1st issue of JOCKS for free while buying RECORD MIRROR.They were double-packed to introduce it.

The very first HiNRG column was about how the NRG sound was coming out of the closet and assaulting the pop charts.
They mentioned how the "miami sound" or "power pop" of STACEY Q was considered NRG music.

Not much in substance but as an avid collector I ate it up...:D

Unfortunately no. It went under in the early 90s. A lot of the people who worked for Dance Music Report (DMR) then went on to work for Dance Music Authority (DMA) though of course that's gone now too.
