The only song I know by Phyllis is "You Know How To Love Me", and that song you don't see on many disco CD compilations.
Hooray! Looks like Arista Records is finally releasing on CD in the U.S. their Phyllis Hyman and Angela Bofill catalogs. Phyllis's "You Know How To Love Me" and Angela's "Something About You" were released yesterday (July 9th). Both have been remastered. The Phyllis CD has one previously unreleased cut, lyrics, new photos (one on the provocative side) and a terrific liner notes by David Nathan (author of "The Soulful Divas"). David talks at length about all the drama that happened during her recording sessions with Reggie Lucas and James Mtume. He also explains why there was never a follow up album teaming the three of them together again!
Angela's CD has 4 additional cuts from the original album and, again, with liner notes by David Nathan.
Hope Arista releases more of their catalog with this much attention to quality!
With this in mind, would we dare try a Best of Artist with Phyllis Hyman during her Arista years??? Dance wise, I loved "Tonight You And Me," "Loving You, Losing You," and, of course, "You Know How To Love Me". Her worst was "Riding The Tiger"! Ballad wise, there are way too many gems, but I think my favorite is the Thom Bell produced "Just Twenty five Miles To Anywhere".

I have to start by saying something I've stated before; Angela Bofill is my #1 all-time favorite female singer. I have her entire catalogue from her debut in '78 to the present. Her voice is something that just mesmorizes me and last summer not only did I have the pleasure to witness her talent and beauty live, but afterwards I got to meet her personally and got my picture taken with her; As you can imagine "it was a dream come true". Phyllis Hyman is also a fave of mine and one of my favorite club tunes not mentioned is 'Under your spell'. These two together spell one thing, MAGIC! This is one collection you can't go wrong with.
Easy,
Sam "ALL JAM"
That is excellent news indeed. I hope we'll be able to pick them up here in the UK!!
Both artistes got a lot of airplay on London radio back in the day.
I have top say that fave is also "Under My Spell" - absolute magic!!
If it moves - funk it!!
Robbie,
Sammy and Jazz are right!! "Under Your Spell" is a beautiful song!!
If you dont know it, hurry up to listen it!!! You'll like it for sure!!
Peace

One of my fav Phyllis Hyman ballads is an album track from her '91 Philly CD "Prime Of My Life" and it's called When I Give My Love (This Time). I also love everything she did with Norman Connors.
My fav Angela Bofill track is "I Try" from her GRP album Angel Of The Night. Will Downing also did a great cover sometime in the early '90s I think. Great stuff....
Glad to hear that Phyllis and Angela were known throughout the world! Such talent deserves to be recognized.
Jazz, you might want to try purchasing via Amazon.com. If they don't have in the UK, try switching over to the US site.
For those of you that aren't familiar with the "You Know How To Love Me" album, "Under My Spell" is included on that album and it is indeed a wonderful song.
DeepBeat, I especially loved Phyllis's reunion with Norman Connors on the "Can't We Fall In Love Again." Hope that album is remastered for CD next by Arista. My favorite from "Prime" is "Meet Me On The Moon" (Her live performance of that song gave me goosebumps! I wonder if we'll ever see a video release of any of her live performances?).
As for Angela, I too loved her two GRP albums best of all. One of my favs is her version of "This Time I'll Be Sweeter"!
By the way, anybody else have stories of Phyllis's infamous temper? Of the half dozen times I saw her live, her hot tempered appeared on half of those shows (eg: Yelling at Roy Ayers while they were performing, letting the theater's lighting staff know how she felt about screwups during the show.). You didn't mess with Phyllis!
It was so weird reading Angela Bofill's name as a couple of weeks ago I was going to say what an under-rated artist she is but I thought she's probably not disco enough 4 this site so I didnt do it! How silly I feel now. I think she's up there with Patti Austin, Anita Baker & Marlene Shaw as on of the great voices of our time.
Some of the stuff she did with Narada Michael Walden was quite disco-ey such as 'Too Tough' but her earlier GRP stuff is really classy such as 'What I Wouldnt Do (for the love of you)'.
Did you hear her LP from '96 called 'Love in Slow Motion'? Its pure class.
I'd love to see her live.
...ya gotta beat the street......
Sorry, I forgot to say I luv Phyllis also!
My favourite track of hers is 'Gonna Make Changes'. It never fails to send a shiver down my spine!
...ya gotta beat the street......
Sttely Dan,
NEVER fear to sing the praises of those LADIES here. WE LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!
I've just posted so many times about Phyllis, Patti, Randy, Stephanie, Deniece, Angela, etc. that I figure I'm repeating myself, ad nauseum.
WE LOVE THE LADIES, I repeat. AND we feel it's one of the major tragedies of the music industry, that they weren't better promoted and consequently, better known to the general public.
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
Mark, that's why I was so delighted to see postings to show these two had international appeal. On 2002-07-11 16:31, markydefad wrote:

Another lady I don't see mentioned often here is Teena Marie. I could write pages about her. She my absolute favourite singer (next to Chaka Khan) and I think she never got the credit she deserved.
Totally talented, crazy and unpredictable. A true artist.
I couldn't agree with you more! I've just been listening to "It Must Be Magic" on my MD on the train into work. Great tune.On 2002-07-12 02:18, DeepBeat wrote:

BTW, her newest LP is ready for release, but is apparently being delayed by contractual arguments ......
If it moves - funk it!!
I noticed Teena Marie was mentioned in the same breath with Phyllis and Angela and I had to say I agree totally 100%. My all-time favorite Teena Marie song, 'You make love like springtime'. I can't play it enough. This song is a staple when I spin the happy hour @ Larry Holmes Ringside. I've never been too big into female singers, however, these three are part of a chosen few I definitely am into.
Easy,

Teena was featured in a Danny Tenaglia track back in 1997 I think and it was a nice piece of work. I think that all these old school divas who cannot adapt (thank god) to the new so called R&B style, should work with house producers. Stephanie Mills did it with Masters At Work and others should try it too. It sure beats staying at home without a recording contract.
"Springtime" is one of my favourite Teena tracks also. They way it breaks into that latin crescendo...What can I say...
I did Teena Marie a few months back in my Best From Artist threads. On 2002-07-12 02:18, DeepBeat wrote:

I will definitely be doing Chaka soon. She was one of the most dynamic singers of the period and generally IMHO.
Find them and destroy them!
DeepBeat, has the new Masters At Work, "Our Time Is Coming" arrived in Greece yet? Patti Austin, James Ingram & Roy Ayers are featured on cuts!On 2002-07-12 17:00, DeepBeat wrote:

Oh yes it has although I haven't gotten my hands on it yet. I think it also has that Stephanie Mills track (Latin Lover) that first came out in 1997.
Both Vega and Gonzales have played here in Athens in the last couple of months. I went to the Vega gig but this time he was dissapointing. He played endless hours on non-vocal afro-house and then he went into 15 minutes of Jaydee's Plastic Dreams. I respect the guy but I can't keep from wondering if he was just bored to be here...

Yup! Latin Lover is on the set. Also, how can anybody be bored to be in Greece??! Some people just don't appreciate their good fortune!
if they're releasing Angela Bofill's Arista albums on CD I'll bet my right foot they won't have the good taste to release "Teaser", which I feel has her best song, "Nothing But a Teaser" ("you love 'em and leave 'em, cold as ice. You're a one-time only pleaser...."). I haven't bought the greatest hits CD that's already in the stores because I'll bet my favorite songs, "Baby I Need Your Love" and "Too Tough" are edited....
...nuff said about Angela and Phyllis, all I can say is ditto.
The factoid about Madam Hyman's temper made me smile. Years ago I saw Chaka Khan guesting with the Blues Brothers Band at North Sea Jazz in The Hague. I will always remember that concert not because of tantrum's but because she could not stand or sing from either being so drunk, or stoned, or both that it was an embarrassement. She mostly just held on to the microphone stand and blurted some random lyrics. Oh boy...
She did make it up to me though, a good number of years later, when I saw her in London playing a lead role in a musical entitled "Mama I want to sing".
This was a very cool story about .... (aggghh, can not remember the name of the female singer). Story is about this girl who sings in church, has a very God fearing mother (played by the woman who's life the musical is about - get it? She plays her own mother!). The girl has a very worldly cool aunt (played by Chaka) and together they listen to the live radio broadcasts of the famous Harlem NYC Apollo Theatre talent shows (the then equivalent of American Idol - LOL).
The girl of course wants to sing jazz, and blues, and her mother is totally against it. The girl does, of course, audition with help of her aunt, and wins. Mother sees her and is so taken by her girl winning that... oh well... happy end!
What was so cool about this evening is that purely by coincidence we caught the very last night of the show. And at the end the singers and the band decided they could not leave London without some serious jamming. It was AWESOME!
Turned out the girl who sang the lead (a young girl) was the niece of Kym Mazelle, who was in the audience and was pulled out on stage to belt a few with Chaka and the rest of the cast. All I can say is WOW.
