Skating? Yes. I always associate Disco with racing cars. I don't know why. And if you watch the movie "When we were Kings" with Muhammad Ali and James Brown in Africa, it has a Disco-Funk feel, so I guess Boxing is also a possibility.
What do you consider to be the official sport of the 1970's/early 1980's DISCO era?
Perhaps roller skating?
Whenever I read articles about roller skating centers still operating across the country the articles almost always mention how... "once you enter you are immediately transported back in time" "the fact that we are currently living in the 21st century is totally ignored" " "DISCO mirrorballs still hang from the ceiling" "brown and orange colored carpets" etc...
Even though roller skating existed before and after 1970's/early 1980's DISCO for some reason whenever I think of roller skating I think of DISCO.
Is roller skating the official sport of 1970's/early 80's DISCO?

are most roller skating centers stuck in time?
throw on a few SALSOUL 12" records, dim the lights and one could easily forget what decade they are in

Roller Skating definitely gets my vote as the "Official Sport" of Disco, When I started skating in 1981 some of the "staples" of the rink during the early 80's (the infamous Twin City Roller Rink in Elizabeth NJ) were Rock it by Herbie Hancock, I'm Ready by Kano, It Ain't No Big Thing - Donna McGee, Atmosphere Strut - Cloud One, and Love is the Message - MFSB (this was played at least twice every night, compounded with the fact I was there at least 3 times a week, made it impossible for me to "want" to hear that song ever, for most of the 90's, lol)
.....but I'd give anything to get those days back! :D :D

Here are some Sports and Disco connection/anecdotes..
Boxing Champ Macho Camacho used to walk into the ring to the sound of "Ain't no stopping us now" he also used to visit this club I worked and he would request this song every time and dance non-stop to the long version with his entourage, Champion Alexis Arguello used to visit another different club (81)and dance with many of the girls, but many times after hours we'll stay behind with the cleaning crew playing Miss Pacman until morning :o (does it count as a sport? )Champion Roberto Duran also used to visit club Alexanders in Miami's downtown and dance all night with his huge party, he sometimes show up at 5AM and pay off everyone to keep the club open just for him and his people , including full kitchen service with chef, now, that is what I call the Sport of having fun
