The Ethel Mermam Disco Baptism Sermon

Why Ethel Mermam Disco Album is not good? It's because Ms. Ethel Mermam showed no respect for the words of Paul :)

Marcio ...you always turn up the damnest stuff!!!

This is from your link :

In 1979, Ethel Merman decided that she needed to do an album of music that appealed to the disco scene.

Cue track four: “I’m Always Doing Something for the Boys”

However, “The Merm” wanted to do her own thing and let the production crew put the rest of it together without her. She refused to do a photo shoot, so here on the cover is an old photograph of her head, pasted on to a figure in a paisley disco dress, boogying across a city skyline. They booked a sound studio for five days. She would not sing with the band. Instead, she took the orchestrations into a recording studio and said, “We’re gonna do one take, so let’s get it right boys, I wanna be outta here today.” And so, she sang each song flawlessly a cappella with no music behind her—she did exactly one take each, and breezed out of the studio at the end of the first day. She said to her producer, “Here’s the music, you make it disco.” And this is the result.

Fascinating . I can't wait until her album turns up within my stacks .... I 'll give it a whole different listen ..... :)

That explanation really does help explain why it's such a dreadful album...

Amen. How many times and ways can we say it? She may be an icon, but this album wreaks and reeks. Spell it any way you wanna. :x

Mmmh, it's special :D And like Jussik said in another topic, listen to the instrumental pieces and it's kinda interesting. :D

I think I'm one of the few who like it. I was on Fire Island last week waiting for the ferry back to Sayville & 'Theres No Business Like Show Business' from Ethel's disco LP came wafting over & it sounded so good in the gorgeous hot sun. :P 8)

Maybe they should have marketed it with the inclusion of a free sick bag.

Sorry to say this Jimmy and Nicky, but good instrumentation does not a good/interesting album make, especially when the one thing you're meant to be diggin' on are the star's vocals. That's like saying a plate of Coq Au Vin is tasty, when the chicken itself is putrid. Love THAT sauce.

And why did you feel the need to include me in this when I said nothing good about this album?

Nicky: Sorry old chum. My eyes are getting real bad; I can't even see things close up anymore.

    I obviously need stronger glasses.

I love "The Ethel Merman Disco Album." It is one of my all time favorite disco albums. I think the arrangers did a great job of matching the music to her lively voice. I got the CD a couple of days ago and it has a previously unreleased song, "They Say It's Wonderful." I don't recall ever hearing her sing before.

Re: The Ethel Mermam Disco Baptism Sermon

Today I found a record I never even heard before. It was called Ethel Merman. I never heard of her before. Its a "promotion - not for sale" 12" with 2 songs, "theres no business like show business" and "something for the boys". Now, after reading this thread, I see its off her baptism album. Why is it called a Disco Baptism sermon?
Anyway, at first im thinking "is this a joke, who is this weird lady". But then after a few seconds im like, "this isnt half bad." By the time I finished both songs I was in MAD LOVE with this record. THIS MUSIC KICKS ASS! This is some of the BEST DISCO EVER! I definitely need to get some more of her stuff. I already taped both songs and will be blasting them out my window when I play them in my car. Im sure people will look at me like im a weirdo but I dont give a F%$#! This stuff is awesome!

They dont make music like that these days, boys!!!
WONDERING WHERE MY HOPES AND DREAMS GONE TO

THERE I WAS WITH NOTHING LEFT TO HOLD ON TO
