For Philly sound lovers, try to find this one by “Caviar”
I just re-discovered this locally produced gem recorded in Miami in 1982 that sadly AFAIK never became a huge hit and I don’t believe was ever picked up by any of the majors, but never the less is great song, this cut, even when it was first released was a throw back to the old 70’s Philly sound featuring real strings and horns, with soft slow intro (France Jolly style) and 70’s background vocal arrangements reminiscent of the Vocal groups of the era, the song is produced by John Atkins who I believe is the same John “ T” Atkins that was lead singer for Harold Melvins’ “Blue Notes” before Teddy Pendergrass took over an resident of Miami when he passed away, although I’m not 100% sure (not credited) he’s probably doing the lead vocals here since this song can be easily attributed to the Blue Notes, this copy is also an early remix work done by Luis A. Martinez that I had forgotten all about and not even listed in his web page, neither is this group any where I can find even though they claim to have released an LP, the name “Caviar” is now used by a new Rock group, I don’t know how many copies were pressed but I just did a Gemm search

and this record must be rare, I only saw one copy listed selling for 276.00 dollars, :o there is another version released shortly after with the same Catalog number (SUD 131) but here they removed the Disco drum beat with the typical high hat sound, I guess they were trying for a more 80’s sound and make it less "Disco", if you find Luis’ version get it, it is much better, you wont believe this record was released in '82. 8)

This ode to a man's self-abnegating obsession can be found on the cd "Diggin' The Crates" volume 4.

As the recording never charted on the pop, R&B, or dance charts, it certainly qualifies as a rarity.

Can you say which version is on this CD? Amazon doesn't show time signatures  . The 12" I have is the other version mentioned by Mixmachine. Vocal Side 1 runs 6:54; instrumental Side 2 is 5:38. Both are credited as "AN ENDLESS MUSIC MIX" by Rusty Garner. Would love to hear the differences between the two.
The cd offers an unnamed mix that runs at 6:54-- apparently the same version you have on vinyl.
Mixmachine,
Think I have a copy of this will dig it out. By the way how did you know there are 2 versions of this with different running times?
Karlos , many times I used to keep different 12s versions of the same song in the same sleeve (and double copies), that’s how I found this one the other day while looking for something else, otherwise if they had been in separate locations I would have never remembered..
I’m pretty sure the original version is the one mixed by Luis, don’t know how this one got to me exactly, most likely some one dropped this advance copy by the club to gage clubs reaction, probably Luis himself don’t remember exactly, then the remix came along later, maybe from the Record pool, I can’t remember, The remix version is the one I used the most, I can tell because of the bpm label markings, apparently this is the version that was pushed since it reached NYC and beyond, but I honestly don’t remember much else.
Mixmachine,
Found my copy at the weekend. I have the 6:54 version. This is pretty rare in it's own right but I'd say your 8:00 version is rarer still. I found 1-2 copies for sale on the web, both were the 6:54 version and there's a copy just gone on E-Bay, again 6:54 version. Would sure like to hear your 8:00 version..!
I recently bought Diggin the crates vol 4 and I can't stop playing this track. Definitely has a early-mid 1970's feel to it.
Also of note was the much improved clearity of Shades of Love's "Keep in touch". On the Hot Productions Shades of Love CD, all of the tracks are of very very poor fidelity. Shades of love were not my cup of tea but its of mention.
