    Ready for the Eighties

    ****

    Hello good people! .... I enjoy cruising through this part of the board ....even though sometimes I feel like I'm visiting a foreign planet !!! :D

    I know I existed in the 80's :) :roll: ....yet more than often I have no idea who the heck you all are going on about .

    But my question right now is .... where does Madonna fit in with all this ... ... I know she was all over the place all the way through the 80's and 90's .... yet rarely if ever .... do I see her get a mention ....? :-? Where does her music and others, like Whitney Houston's , fit in ???

    Thanks !

    in need of educatin' ...... ...REMICKS

    Hi remicks...

    Really, I think the reason you don't see Madonna or Ms Houston mentioned much here is because they are not looked on as Hi NRG or Euro artists, although I think that quite a few people on here would agree to liking quite a lot of tracks by both artists...I know I can say that I love a lot of Madonna's 80's output, and my favourite Whitney tracks are "I'm Your Baby Tonight" and "So Emotional"...but hey, what do I know...most people on here who are a lot more informed than me...just giving my opinion!

    Although Maddi and Whitney might have been given airplay in hinrg clubs, as a genre, they were not hinrg artists as such.
    The people we woffle on about are normally purely hinrg, euro or that ilk. My personal Maddi Fave is 'Ray of light' and for Whitney...er.....'It's not right but it's ok (thunderpuss mix)'.

    Did you know 'Ray of light' is actually a cover version fron an early 70's song which escapes me at the moment. obviously with slight changes.

    All are really Pop/Dance but if were looking at the remixes;
    Ray of light (calderone mix) is House/Tribal
    Express Yourself; Pop
    Justify my love..............er.............sleaze, LOL!

    When Madonna or Madge to her friends, first became known here, it was for her dancefloor tracks like "Holiday", and the brill "Lucky Star". A lot of people like me thought that she was a black singer. This was down to a deliberate ploy by her label, because they knew that certain people would not buy her music if they saw a white girl's face on the sleeve, they issued white label copies, and ones without her photo on them. Similar things happened with Joss Stone's early releases. In 1985 when Madge was at her peak of brilliance, she released her last 'disco-y' song "Into The Groove." Even the ballads like "Live To Tell" and "Borderline" were great. Then in '86 came all the dire stuff like "True Blue" etc. That didn't stop it getting to the #1 spot here though. I won't even bother with her Erotic LP. Her thought provoking songs like "Say a Prayer" sounded great and were controversial, but the "Ray of Light" stuff she cut with William Orbit at the production desk, didn't set me on fire, as seemed to be aimed at the techno club crowd. "Human Nature" was almost a return to former glories, but IMHO these days she's more reknowned for the production values of her promo videos, which are brilliant: "Rain", "Nothing Really Matters", etc.

    I am probably one of those rare gay men who actually is not keen on either of these "over hyped" artists - some of Madges early 80s stuff was OK pop, but you can keep the rest of it.. Same goes for "screamin Whitney" :lol: :lol:
