"Fast Food Mixing"

Blaxman gave me an idea that I think will make for a good topic here, especially for you D.J.'s (former or current).

Here in N.Y., we only have one station that'll play the disco music more or less (WKTU). Years ago, they were classic-heavy, but now they have decided to strip away this great music and save it for an hour-long "mix" on Saturday nights.

Years ago, the highlight of my weekend was listening to the "KTU Funhouse" with Jellybean. His mixes were just too awesome to describe. Unlike every other D.J. I ever heard, Jellybean was the only who played the records practically from start to finish, and always knew the right time to mix in another song.

KTU did away with Jellybean mixes a few years back, and since then have replaced him with these anonymous D.J.'s engaging what I call "fast food mixing". What I mean by this is, the D.J.'s will cut into another song immediately during the first break. Plus, most the songs also get speeded-up and you hear certain sounds that you know didn't come from the original vinyl recording (unless it was a reissue/remix). To me, this has to be the worst thing in the whole art form of D.J. mixing. The songs become disposable this way; is it all about trying to put as many songs as you can into your "repetoire", without fully appreciating the songs for what they are and hearing them for a good amount of time until the moment you hear the next song coming in and it builds up a lot of anticipation.

It's been hard hearing a good mix in the years since KTU did away with The Funhouse. And the songs you hear on the current mix hour is now becoming almost like Top 40 (Keep On Jumpin', One More Minute, Move On Up/Up, Up, Up). And another annoying trait of these current mix shows; the radio D.J. has to talk in between the breaks, so you never get to hear the other song mixing in with the other.

I NEVER even heard those songs on Australian retro radio, that's how bad Aussie retro stations are when it comes to choice of disco music.
