Great singing is not about vocal gymnastics, it's about interpreting the music. The ability to be subtle is just as important -- no, make that
more important -- than the ability to belt out eardrum-splintering wails, on-key or not. If you look at the greatest singers of the past 100 years, you'll find that many of their best performances were not ones that required huge range or volume; but the ones that truly conveyed the music. Also, I think that the best singers are the ones that make it seem so easy, and so natural. Let's take Minnie Riperton's "Lovin' You" as an example. She casually sings out those stratospheric notes in the chorus in an understated way that seems effortless... and perfectly suits the song. If Mariah or Céline were to do this song (God forbid), I can guarantee that they would blast that line out like a gigantic robotic cat that was on fire.
