    Allison Moyet!!!!! SACRILEGE!!!!!

SHE was/is a wonderful singer (I DID think SHE was a HE when the Yaz stuff was first released).

What about a little screeching Canadian who sings like a yippy chihuahua with a lit firecracker up her ass.

Divine, I'll give ya, was pretty bad. I didn't want those records of his in MY collection--Camp-value or not. Some DID, however, BUT, I never paid for them.

Was Denyse LePage a member of Arpeggio?? That voice on "Love and Desire" sounds so much like her.

Worst male voice, well that's easy Marshall Mathers (Eminem). His voice really bites my arse and is as irritating as scratching an itchy rash. Not only does his music suck, so does his voice.

Also Chris Isaac (Australian country/blues/rock artist) has a really bad voice because he moans like a dog when singing especially that awful song "Somebody's Crying".

Another bloke to mention is the lead singer of Korn (sorry Outsider). Reason being is before he starts putting the aggression in his voice he has this snivelly sort of voice which is very annoying moreso than his aggressive voice.

Lead singer of Slipknot has a super-awful voice because his voice is constantly aggressive and very roary "ROOOOAAAAARRRRR", which suites their style of death metal music. I like heavy metal such as AC/DC, Deep Purple and KISS, but I can't stand death metal because it's full of "ROOOAAARRR!!! ROOOAAARRR!!! ROOOAAARRR!!!" and sounds horrible.

And another guy that popped in my mind is one of the singers from Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention. I was watching the Sounds Of The 60's program on TV which show 60's clips from UK music and variety shows and one was Mothers Of Invention's "Who's This Guy". The guy singing it sounded like he sucked on a semi-trailer sized tank of helium just before singing that song, his voice was bloody awful. His voice is even higher pitched than Frankie Valli's when he was singing "Big Girls Don't Cry".

Worst female voice, first thing that comes to my head is that girl from Aqua who sings "Barby Girl". SO DAMN ANNOYING!!!!!!!!

Also Melanie has a pretty annoying voice when she sings "Brand New Key".

When it comes to worse female vocals, nothing beats "I Wanna Be A Hippy" by Technohead. The vocals might be Lee Newman's but I'm not sure. Still this is the second WORSE techno song I've ever heard, what comes at No.1 is that pathetic trashy piece of turd song "Hampster Dance" technofied ARRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!

As for Divine, well I must admit I liked his version of Four Seasons "Walk Like A Man" because it was a great 80's high energy disco song.

Nope, the screechy voice on the Arpeggio records was Jessica Williams. Strangely, she didn't sound like that on her solo work, ("Queen Of Fools", "Gambling On Your Love") so blame Simon Soussan for making her sound like that on the Arpeggio records. Am I wrong????

Oh, and about Divine... of course he was horrible. That was the whole point. Now, I don't understand how that makes him camp... isn't camp supposed to refer to things that are unintentionally ridiculous and cheesy?

Oh, and I too think Alison Moyet is a great singer. The sound of her clearing her throat is more musical than most of today's dime-a-dozen divas could ever hope to be.

But I will concede that her giggle from Francios Kevorkian's dub mix of "Situation" has been lifted and reused in so many other tracks that it ought to disqualify any new release from club play... same as those James Brown yelps... IT'S BEEN DONE TO DEATH PEOPLE, MOVE ON!

    Markydefad--

Get out of here; that was Jessica Williams on "Love and Desire"?? I liked "Queen Of Fools"; I had no idea that was her!!

    Blaxman--

I'll second that on Fran "The Nanny" Drescher. Macy Gray also has a voice from hell. 'N Sync, Backstreet Boys, and Alanis Morrisette also make my list.

Funky Dude, there's no need to apologize. It just a matter of taste. I like Jonathon Davis's singing, but like that's just my opinion.

As you could figure out, I also like this guy's singing (I'm a huge fan of theirs yet I don't know his name, I think his band number is 8, but don't hold me on that). I think his singing fits the type of music that Slipknot plays, and I love that aggressive sound of theirs. But again, that's just my opinion, and I've never been against people who don't feel the same.

As for singer I don't like, I've got a nice little list of my own:

    Liam Gallagher (Oasis)
    Ricky Martin
    Madonna
    Kylie Minogue
    Christina Aguilera
    Mariah Carey
    Celine Dion

    And there are others.

    Worst vocal performer?

I will stick with our music and nominate Francine McGhee!! Before you all jump up and down in protest, just wait a sec ....

Delirium is an outstanding disco record - easily in my Top 10 all-time faves! A true classic for the dance floor! But on the UK release, the Delirium that we all know and love was the B-side instrumental.

Flip it onto the A-side and you get Ms McGhee's vocal version of Delirium. Absolutely appalling!! The singing sounds more like a wailing banshee recorded in a lock-up garage across the road! Aaarrghhhh!!!

Come on guys, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, this topic is not on which singers who you don't like, it is on who has the worst voices! I can't stand Celine anymore because it is well overplayed no matter where I go, Wall*Mart, elevator, ewww

Geez, once again a thread is turned into another endless round of Celine and Mariah bashing.

I'm no big fan either, but can't we resist the usual suspects and obvious targets: Celine, Mariah, Britney, Bolton, etc., etc. The comments posted here are as tired as most of their records.

As for other singers who have hit (or not) some sour notes, check out Claudja Barry struggling at the end of "Work Me Over" and Phyllis Nelson running out of steam on "Don't Stop the Train."

And I would still say that Céline and Mariah have terrible voices. Shrill, piercing, shrieking, squawking, banshee-on-speed, etc.

Great singing is not about vocal gymnastics, it's about interpreting the music. The ability to be subtle is just as important -- no, make that more important -- than the ability to belt out eardrum-splintering wails, on-key or not. If you look at the greatest singers of the past 100 years, you'll find that many of their best performances were not ones that required huge range or volume; but the ones that truly conveyed the music. Also, I think that the best singers are the ones that make it seem so easy, and so natural. Let's take Minnie Riperton's "Lovin' You" as an example. She casually sings out those stratospheric notes in the chorus in an understated way that seems effortless... and perfectly suits the song. If Mariah or Céline were to do this song (God forbid), I can guarantee that they would blast that line out like a gigantic robotic cat that was on fire.

were celine and mariah suggested because they are truly horrible? because they are not disco? you may not like their style of music, but in your heart you know they could sing anything comfortably.
i could pick some country artists, with that twangy singing out of the side of the mouth style. but that does not mean it's the worst.
or some harder rock bands of the 80's that had high pitch screaming/squealing as though there was a rope around their neck. but that does not mean it's the worst
currently the most grating thing i am hearing now is ja rule.
of course there was the ethel merman disco album....hum?.

You can still enjoy a song if it has crappy vocals, especially if it's meant to be camp as Graham stated earlier. Here are the Goddess' picks, based purely on awful vocals.

    60s
Chris Montez - the voice that sunk a thousand ships. His "The More I See You" is the best example of this (remove the vocals, and it's a nice song).
Noel Harrison - his singy/talky voice, borrowed from his father, almost allowed him to **** up "Windmills Of Your Mind"

    70s
    Sylvie Vartan
    Flower
    Hurricane Smith - AAAAARRRGH!!!

    80s
    Fonda Raye
Roxanne Shante' - Her voice, with its "fingernails across a blackboard" quality, could be used to make spies confess.
Samantha Fox - she's delicious, but that Eliza Doolittle-on-crack voice of hers had to go!

    Almost forgot! Let's add:
    80s
Michelle': Her Butterfly McQueen-on-helium turn on "No More Lies" has to be an 80s lowlight.
Frankie Smith: I'm with Blaxman on this one, I hated the song, and Smith sounds like someone just waking up into a bad hangover.
    70s
Freddie James: "Get Up And Boogie"? No, someone please put this kid to sleep.

I could see some pityful words about Celine and Mariah.
But the both are mercyless with our ears, dont you think? Pity on me!!

    Boodi,

Strangely enough, last year, Noel Harrison was working at a newsstand on Fairfax near Melrose, here in West Hollywood. I bought newspapers from him on a bunch of occasions and something about him always caught my attention. He has a wonderful speaking voice. It wasn't until I saw an article in the Enquirer about him working at the Centerfold newsstand that I realized who he was.

I still shop there, but I haven't seen him for a year or so.

Also, does anyone else think that Cerrone and Celine Dion could be brother & sister???

Cerrone and Celine Dion, Keefe?! By combining two of this board's favorite topics/targets, you can light a fire under TWICE as many people!

Let's see... Doesn't it look like Donna Summer circa Bad Girls and Michael Bolton have the same hairdresser...?
