    Cold Calling

You're sitting down watching Corrie or any other TV show that ticles your fancy, feet up, sipping a cup of tea/coffee and.............the phone goes. You rush to the phone to speak to a mate and who is it? A bloody cold caller asking you if you want to change your bank account, sell you windows, or doing a survey. I know you can screen these calls but why should we have to? Do they get on your nerves like they do me?!?!

I know SuperD, But the problem is you get the same company phoning up time and time again even when you've politely declined.

Exactly. When I get such phonecalls I give 'em hell. The new big thing here is that when you listen to them and allow them to send you information (especially telecom-firms or electricity-suppliers) they consider it as a contract. This is no bull, over here, those gangsters work that way.

Strange? Yes! Legal? No, but consumer-organisations here in Belgium are opening cases here every day against them to stop that nonsense.

Sorry, when I pick up the phone and I get one of those people I give 'em hell and just forbid them to call me again. And I always say the magic words: "if you even consider to send me a contract I'm coming to your call-center or company and I'm gonna shout in your ears till you are convinced of my bad character  "

Presently before the U.S. courts, companies are trying to bypass the do-not-call registry on similar grounds. These companies argued that if you have done business with them within one calendar year, your privacy is getting violated with solicitations.

I'm registered in the "Do not call" national list and that cuts most of the calls, but many times I put them on "hold" and never come back

Even more annoying must be the mere presence of a mobile phone. I've never known anyone NOT answer one of those when they ring. That's why I still don't have one. I actually value my privacy.

So, if you have a mobile phone that you're prepared to answer any time of day, in any place, I don't see that you can moan about the odd few cold callers, n'est ce pas?

    Hi Quinny.
I don't own a mobile phone. These calls are made to land lines.

That's true. I never get those calls on my mobile. Always on the land line. And we can subscribe to a list which prevents getting publicity mail but it doesn't include phone calls. Not yet! But, hey, Spam is everywhere unfortunately.

And Q, you're right, I own a mobile but I only use it when it's necessary and not for the cause most people think it's developped for: talking for hours about absolutely nothing.

AFAIK here in America Marketers are not allowed to place calls to mobile units, that would be very costly to the recipients, here in Florida they are now also banned from sending Fax advertisements to anyone including businesses, if the recipient keeps record of the violations and reports it to the appropriate authorities the vendors could be heavily fined for each occurrence, this practice was costing millions in paper, ink, maintenance service and time to recipients.

    As far as Mobile phones, there is no escaping owning one now (actually, for years now), here in Florida the major Bell companies all got out of the Public phone business long ago, for a couple of years after ‘deregulation’ small companies were providing this service but because of cell phones proliferation most of them went belly up and as a result finding a public phone became quite an ordeal, even if you’re lucky to find one after a long walk it probably doesn’t work at all, the few Companies still in business hardly provide maintenance;
For years I refused Cells phones and kept my beeper instead, but had to give it up because I could never return any calls in an adequate time, the Public phone scarcity also created another issue, if you find your self stranded in a remote area after hours or after any road emergencies one could die before finding a working public phone to place a call, so, I had to bite the bullet and became a reluctant owner of the dreaded cell phone.

Fellas, you missed the point I was trying to make.

If you own a mobile phone, which quite evidently you're prepared to answer 24/7, how can the odd cold caller to your landline be any more of a nuisance? The mere possession of the mobile, is the REAL pain in the ass!!!

    Imagine the scene:

Man making love to his wife/girlfriend/boyfriend....mobile phone rings. Man picks up phone and answers...person the other end "Hi it's me, I'm just about to go into the supermarket and feeling bored so I thought I'd give you a call. Is it pissing down with rain where you are?"
The moment is lost and what could have been 3 minutes of passion is destroyed, 'cos you never remember to switch the damned mobile off.

The landline would have rung itself off the hook 'cos it (hopefully) would been in some other room with the answer phone ON.

Question: How many times have you broken down in the middle of nowhere? How many times have you been attacked? How many times have you been in any situation that couldn't wait half an hour? Would not buying some eggs at the store ('cos you forgot to put them on the shopping list) be such a huge problem?

Mobile phones are the bane of modern life and totally unecessary. We manged before 'em, we could easily manage without 'em. Life would just be a tad slower, once again and the quality of life a tad better.

I believe here, and am sure elsewhere to, there are laws governing what times cold callers/telemarketers are allowed to call. Am sure there's a list you can get on to not be called here too, but could be wrong.

What I hate are the ones that are hard to get rid of....they just won't take no for an answer. There also are more and more call centres that have centres in India. Not taking a simple no is bad enough, but trying to understand what is being said??

Oh, re: mobiles...I have one but never have been cold called on it. Besides solution is simple, if you don't want it to bother you, just switch it off. I haven't heard of any telemarketers leaving a message on your answering service.

Et voilà! I have one of those very expensive mobiles that has a turn on/turn off switch

But Quinny, sometimes people do need one! If I'm on the funfair in my trailer, I don't have a landline, so I need to be able to call or to be called. If we are travelling from one town to another with transports that could easily be 5 trucks and if 1 of them breaks down I can't go looking for a phone booth (most in Belgium are only working on cards and not coins, so you need to carry that one too in your wallet). If there's an accident I can take a photo with my mobile.

Always useful for the insurance company and so I don't always have to drag a loaded camera around. If I arrive in a town and civilians are parked on the place where I have to build up I take a photo from the scene and their plates coz' I get a fine when I'm not ready in time so I can proof that I was blocked.

And I can send and recieve e-mails, and listen to music so I don't have to buy an MP3 player

But I totally, for 100%, absolutely agree on the fact that a whole lotta people are just babbling and talking humbug in their little phoney.

But I for sure need it. You don't and that's fine. Most people can easily live without one but they don't realise it :o

I'm so with you there Quimmy. I find it so rude when people answer their mobile phone when you are mid-conversation with them or in any other social situation. I s'pose it's symptomatic of today's trends for short concentration spans & instant gratification. They are such a cultural phenomenon & I don't understand why. I get really fed up with listening to conversations about how someone has changed their phone or their line rental to whichever company, blahdy blahdy blah! It's like everyone has been put under a trance but I've been somehow unaffected by it. & don't even get me onto drivers on their mobiles - I may combust with rage.
