The Hues Corporation:"Freedom for the Stallion"

''When we first came out, we had a song called "Freedom For The Stallion". If you could get a copy of that and listen to that song, you would see that the group had a classic going there. Nobody knew The Hues Corporation. "Freedom For The Stallion" was the most beautiful song. The Black stations wouldn't play it because they said we were too white. I'm serious when I say this. The White stations wouldn't play it because they said they didn't understand what we were talking about. They said no, we're gonna go out with "Miracle Maker". Then all of a sudden, "Rock The Boat" took off.''

How interesting...I read the thread that accompanied this post. I noticed that when asked what the kids danced to when they heard "Rock The Boat" that answer was "everything." If I remember correctly, The Bump was the predominant dance the kids did to this song...Also, I remember a bit of controversy regarding the ending lyric to "Rock The Boat"...I remember some thought that the song ended with the phrase:
"Rock on with your bad self..." possibly referring to "pleasuring oneself" I've listened to this song a zillion times throughout the years but personally, I've never really been able to make out the ending lyric... Take Care... Mario 8)

My understanding of lyrics has often been pretty remote.... ( I usually give the songwriter too much credit at being clever ....) but I agree the closing line is "rock on with your bad self " ... which I think is actually a clever line ...

I can remember buying The Hues Corporation album a couple of years later after " ROCK THE BOAT " had happened and "FREEDOM FOR THE STALLION" stuck out like a pierced nipple .... I couldn't believe this wasn't a hit and it's been a favorite of mine ever since .... It just goes to show you ..while some seemingly undeserving tunes managed to make it ... they displaced others that deserved it more . But that does make it fun for music collectors .... because there are hidden pearls in some of these oysters ...just like "FREEDOM FOR THE STALLION" .. there are many many secret tunes that never made it big on the radio ..... :D
