I was curious if anyone on the board owned a DVD player. Are they any better than VHS tape? I haven't bought one because you can't record on the cheaper models.
I'd like to hold off getting one until the recordable DVD players come down in price.
I think a DVD recorder offers 500 lines resolution oppose to the Super VHS 400 lines and the VHS 240/250 lines. But looking at the horizontal resolution of a Digital VHS it kicks arse, 1080 lines resolution. Who knows, Digital VHS may be our future standard of the VCR, and co-exist alongside with DVD.
Anyhow I haven't yet got a DVD player even though I could easily lay-by one at K-Mart because I'm not much of a movie person but more into classic music TV shows such as Soul Train, Countdown (Australian pop show), Top Of The Pops, and others. At the moment there's nothing but movies on DVD and a few rock concerts and maybe a few series shows but that's about it. Once DVD recorders come down in price, I'll be interested because I can copy all of my music video collection to DVDs and I've got A LOT of music videos promos and TV show performances from the 50's to 90's, and most of it is from the 70's my favourite era.
Basically if you are a movie person by all means buy it as you'll get the best quality out of movies.
I guess this is the beginning of a brand new era for movies, first came the silent films, then came the movies with sound B&W and colour, then came the movie video era (1980's), and now comes the movie DVD era. I wonder what comes after DVD in the distant future, virtual reality movies (you being in the movie with a virtual reality head set)?
Australia mate! The land of many great funkateers!
